A little extra tip. If you click the gear icon in the reference tab, you can actually import an audio file and have the plugin analyze an entire song without needing to hear it in real time.

Great tutorial. I have other match EQs from third party developers but the way match EQ is done with LPX’s Match EQ makes it really simple. The workflow is so much more cleaner. Great job. Thanks

Another great vid Josh / thank you! You brought up something that is worthy of its own video, using the Match EQ, inversely,, to help with unmasking, while mixing. All these years and I never knew you can bring a track into the Match EQ via the Side Chain Menu! This is a prime example why, no matter what level you are at, being a lifelong student pays off off more often than not. I find there is usually a nugget of info, like this, in everything you read, watch or learn from, even if you believe you know it really well enough already!

I was thinking the same thing. I’ll try to get another video up soon about this.

Pardon my ignorance of the term unmasking, but would this be using one track (i.e. guitar 1 or bass) as an inverse reference to help get another track (i.e. guitar 2, keyboard) to sit in the mix better? That would be a great tutorial. Thank you for the great content on this channel.

Evod Nomis unmasking, is mitigating a situation where one or more tracks are keeping another track or tracks from being heard. A common example would be a bass track preventing a kick drum from being heard.

You can load a new 'Current' and 'Reference' profile of any audio region in Logic (or audio file in Finder) by simply dragging them into the Match EQ and dropping them on the 'Current' or Reference button. Works like a charm!

In match eq I usually make an eq profile of my master then inverse it and use it on the mastr. Usually always sounds good. I also do this with seperate tracks just use match eq to make a profile of that track (or instrument) then inverse it. and eq the same track with the inversed profile. Gives immediately instant clarity, of course moderate use is important. So in match eq you use only 'current' and 'match' you don't use reference.

Can I also use any track I like as a reference and use its EQ curve for my own song? Or is this not a good idea? And thanks for another great video btw!
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Yep you sure can! You can even drag and drop it into the reference window and it'll analyze the whole thing.

I’ve used this before and it’s a great tool. I’m thinking it would also be a good approach for matching kick or snares - or any instrument - if they could be some what isolated (eq’ed?) from within a reference track.

Hi. I'm a beginner at Logic Pro. I've run into a strange problem. I was almost done with the project and was doing some work with EQ. The EQ window was open on top of my project, and I wanted to close it, but instead by mistake I closed the main project file. Now when I try to open the project in Logic it only opens up the EQ window, and doesn't allow me to see or edit the main project window where all the tracks are. What should I do? Thanks for your help.

Nice rundown of this plugin, thanks. I didn't get one thing though: for the ref track, do you choose an already mastered track or rather a pre-master, mixed one? Also, wrt kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfTeHmonaikkNU For quick A/B testing you can hold Alt while pressing Solo. This will automatically turn off the other soloed track.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 4 жыл бұрын
You can use it both ways, if you’re trying to match the frequencies to an already mastered track, use another song as a reference master, or trying to match the frequencies of multiple premastered songs like I did here.
@SchibbiSchibbi
@SchibbiSchibbi 2 ай бұрын
In this case, Logic's native match EQ is superior. you can easily dran down the frequencies you wish

Question… when you are doing the EQ match is it possible to do it only to the sides or the mids or only stereo?

Why didnt u just route both tracks output into a bus and then that bus to the stereo out and put the reference pluging in between ? Or even better right into the stereo out channel ? 🤷‍♂️ would that make a difference from putting it right on
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 2 жыл бұрын
It won’t make any difference as long as the volume output of the tracks is set to 0.0dB. I feel like that’s a longer way of doing things, imo.

hello dear, first of all thank you so much for helping us to learn this Logic Pro, you're a true gem brother for me. one thing i need to ask as I'm following this Logic Pro X tutorial series from the first video, do i need to cover all of 162 videos, as I'm seeing this tutorial series ended by 77th video, but there are 162 total videos. what to do ?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy 4 жыл бұрын
The first 77 videos were my old videos that covered Logic 10.0 and 10.1. They went in a logical order going through audio, recording, midi, synthesis, mixing and then mastering. After #77 I just made videos on various random topics in Logic. You don't have to watch all of them. If you want to learn the basics within 10.3 or 10.4, check out my Logic Pro X 101 and 201 courses. They are shorter, and cover many of the basics.

So ... if you’re in a mastering session why not just put the match eq plugin (and all other plugins for that matter) on your stereo out channel? Then all you have to do when learning the 2 tracks is mute one or the other. Way easier. Your way honestly makes zero sense in a mastering session since there’s only the one track you’re working with. No need to put plugs directly on that track.

This track is so over compressed- how can you even work on it ?!?

I don't know if you always put the same songs in your videos, but honestly I always hear you repeat yourself in the music. I mean it's always same scale with similar sounds, rythem and similar riffs.. I hate to be that guy, but it's sad to see all this potential in the production & mixing but not the same in the songwriting.. Again maybe its just me but I wanted to say it because I want the best out of you not vice versa.
@MusicTechHelpGuy

I do re-use a lot of the same songs, but not for the reasons you're thinking. I'm a songwriter too, but that's not how I earn my income, so I'm not writing every day or putting out new music all the time. Although I do have a master's degree in music and I've been a musician all my life, when it comes to my job, I'm an engineer/producer more than a musician. However, the reason why you hear a lot of the same musical examples on the channel is because I'm limited by copyright and fear of de-monetization. Even if I get permission from an artist that I've worked with to use their music in my videos, often when I use their music in videos, the video gets demonetized, or the video gets flagged for 'shared revenue' which basically means I make almost nothing from the video, because the distribution company for the band/artist wants to make sure that no one is re-uploading their content. Even if I use a small 20-30 second clip, it can get flagged -- it's happened with 10 seconds clips before. This has happened dozens of times since I started the channel. Maybe one day if my channel is big enough and I'm basically doing KZbin full-time or near full-time, I can have more free time to write new music and use it on the channel. But for now, I still have a business to run, clients to work for, and classes to teach at the local University. Doesn't leave me a lot of free time to write more music. The fact is that I have a business to run outside of KZbin, and while I've mixed and/or produced hundreds of songs with other clients over the last few years -- 99% of these songs I've worked on either (1) will immediately get the video demonetized because of the artist's distributor, (2) don't really fit any topic I'm trying to teach on the channel, (3) or simply just aren't solid enough recordings to use on a video tutorial, or (4) some combination of the first three. So it's not that I choose to use the re-use a lot of the same songs, it's that I know which ones I can and CAN'T use.
