I agree and disagree. I can see where he uses samples but I legit listened to both albums side by side the other day, and I couldn't tell. Kendrick and Logic are both unique and although Logic clearly has inspirations, UP was definitely his own shit. I didn't think of GKMC at all.

TheGusBus97 yeah i agree. Logic is original no doubt. even tho i hear Kendrick now i still think its Logics own shit. but what i mean is i can hear the inspiration a lot more now. its probably just a mind fuck cuz i didnt hear it at first, but since everybody is comparing Logic to Kendrick my mind hears Kendricks vibe now.

I'm Jensen Yes that was blatantly obvious though. He wasn't trying to rip it off, i'm pretty sure he sampled it and changed the beat up a bit. The song you are talking about is 'Metropolis', but because it was a sample, people are okay with it. Mainly it's the other songs where his general 'style' makes people think he sounds like Kendrick. Which I get and don't get. Nothing wrong with Metropolis though...even Kendrick has tons of samples in his albums.

It's not a "Classic" but it deserves more than a 6/10 (maybe a 7.5/10), but so did Acid Rap by Chance and Because The Internet by Gambino did have flaws but it deserved to be a bit higher. But I'm a Hip-Hop head and your more of a music nerd or all genres. So I guess we look at things different. I respect your opinion nevertheless.

diebyeguy perhaps you're just looking at it from an educational sort of way, but 5's are pretty successful, on this chart. Usually it's personal gripes with it, which, in all of those albums, that's exactly it. What's more important is making sure you're seeing the album entirely, without hype. Though he did a fine review for Because the Internet, I think DeadEndHipHop did a much better one, with no numbers to distract you.

If you listen to Good Kid, m.A.A.d city, you’ll hear similar samples, particularly “Bitch Don’t kill my vibe” vs “Addiction” by Logic. Another similar sample is from “Sing About Me, I’m Thirsty” vs Metropolis. Some of Logic’s flow is very Kendrick as well, I don’t think one is better than the other, I like both. However Logic certainly is inspired by Kendrick

I completely disagree, this album was a strong 9/10 for me. I loved all of the beats and I thought the Intro was one of the best tracks because it is very emotional and gets me through the day honestly. His lyrical content is much different than most rappers, which I love. Even if he does go mainstream with it, like on Bounce and Never Enough it still does not sound like anything on mainstream radio, it still sounds fresh and different. Logic is perfect at mastering mainstream elements and combining them with a little extra lyricism and story-telling that is better than most artists. All of the beats were fantastic in my opinion and fit Logic's voice, delivery, and flow perfectly. And the fact that he can do regular time, double time, and even triple time rapping is impressive. He switches up different flows on songs (which is hardly done anymore in mainstream accessible hip-hop) and he is just nice, respectful, and relatable MC overall. He is amazing towards his fans and really makes an effort to support them and show them love and that gains my highest respects because you just don't see that anymore. Amazing album. Best hip-hop from this year in my opinion.
@jgwentworth8329
@jgwentworth8329 10 жыл бұрын
I also do not agree with your approach of comparing artists to other artists. It is not a good review tactic in my opinion. You take the art for what it is and you don't judge off other artists. Yes, Logic takes inspiration from Kendrick but I don't believe any of these tracks were even close to being a "GKMC throw away" or anything of the sort. I think that claim is very ignorant and an ill-informed one at that. Logic is his own person and wants his art looked at that way. I think we as reviewers owe him the due diligence to look at HIS art as HIS creation and not anyone else's.

I love Anthony's reviews even though I don't agree with him most of the time, but it's fucking annoying that thing that he does where he constantly compares artist with other artist, and even more annoying when he compares the album of an artist with the more old albums of that particular artist, it just gives the impression that his opinions are always biased and are not professional reviews, but yeah, it's his opinion after all...

Oh, I know. If compared to the entire spectrum of hip-hop discography, Under Pressure really isn't very groundbreaking. But compared at least to the albums released in the past year and their respective quality, I think the album more than easily holds its own, and to call it an album of the year contender would definitely not be an overstatement. I have mad respect for you Fantano, but I have to disagree with this review. Logic is simply trying to bring back that old school swag of hip hop. Nothing too clubby, just simple, down-to-earth intuitive bars. I'll admit there are a few tracks that sound similar to other artists' songs, but logic has taken inspiration from so many talented, diverse emcees (both new and old) and has attempted to craft his own sort of "new-school, old-style" persona - like the Frank Sinatra of rap music, hence his alter-ego. He's one of those guys who just reeks of class. But again, all my opinion. And as usual I respect yours, well done.

I don't really agree with 6/10 review because I personally enjoyed this album so much I would almost give it a 10, and I also saw a comment that said fantano has some sort of hate for logic and I kinda of agree to some extent, but anyways, he is entitled to his own opinion. Tuan Le lol I prolly should’ve made that clear. Fantano, he’s a little too biased, if he has a review channel it should be based on the album in a contextual concept based off of what the album wants to be and other things. This album, though I don’t play it often, is easily an 8. It has an extremely unique feeling, Fantano is always looking for a way to compare to Kendrick and that impairs his ability to review the music. Just my take.

I was talking about Anthony in general, so I don't get the whole, "he didn't like Logic's album therefore I hate him", reused argument. I don't give a fuck if he likes Logic's album or not, but he needs to at least be consistent with the ratings he gives to albums, otherwise he loses credit as a critic. I'm sure you agree with me on some point right? Have you seen a rating and gone, "I disagree with that", of course you have. There's a reason he gave Q a low score and Yachty a high one, bias plain and simple. The majority agreed it should be the other way around, that's how you know if there's bias or not.

I agree that this album sounds like it's done by a fan of hip-hop, but i LIKE that. UP DOESNT have a competitive vibe, but that's why it can be FELT by fans. It doesnt feel like he has to make it known he's the greatest like every rapper out there does, it feels like he's using hip-hop as an artistic outlet which makes it feel real. I disagree with the idea that Logic does it because it's a hit genre, and would argue that he's doing it out of love for hip-hop. Also, i agree the little additions of facts were unnecessary, but i found it pretty interesting.

The only time I heard something even remotely similar to Kendrick was the instrumental of Metropolis, and I'm not a big fan of Till The End but everything else is great, what are you talking about? To Pimp A Butterfly has jazzy saxophone all throughout but that doesn't mean Kendrick copied the sax in Metropolis. Remember, two similar things can exist without being copies of each other, and I think your philosophy was "Kendrick and Logic are both conscious rappers rapping about their issues with wordplay and calm instrumentals? Logic must be ripping Kenny off!" Though I agree that he turned into somewhat of an fast Eminem copycat later on, Under Pressure is not that, and in most, if not all songs I can say Logic brings a style of his own.

Willets Oh, sry for misunderstanding then. Fair enough point in that case. But in Tribe's case they really tied in well with the album's aesthetic, were related to the songs following or preceding them and functioned as a tour guide for the album that was introduced in the first track. No idea how Logic uses them because I never listened to the album but apparently their function was not that clear aside from the MM reference, at least for Anthony.
@willets2617
@willets2617 8 жыл бұрын
idkman I'd say that the way Logic uses them is actually relevant to the album as a whole, since the album tells the tale of his background and the things that made him who he is to this day, eg. the pressures of the industry, his troubled background and even his nicotine addiction. He's been quoted numerous times saying that it was groups such as Tribe and Wu Tang etc. are the reason he got into hip-hop in the first place, so I'd have to disagree with Anthony on that one and say it fits well if you look at the album from that perspective

This is such a subjective review. It's a review about LOGIC'S ALBUM, a single album, not two, and it's called Under Pressure. A review is giving thoughts and opinions on something with still being objective and not COMPARING. You could rename this to'' Comparison of Under Pressure & GKMC''. You aren't supposed to compare a fucking debut album with something like GKMC. so wrong.

Apart from Kendrick, TND isn't a fan of pop-oriented college rap. J Cole, Lupe and Logic get average reviews, whereas hip hop with a rawer edge (Freddie Gibbs, yc the cynic, Mick Jenkins, Denzel curry) get higher reviews. It's his personal taste, music can never be objectively reviewed

Yeah probably not the best way to describe their sound, but its definitely got more of a college/upbeat feel in comparison to the guys I mentioned. I don't agree with him on everything but I can appreciate how he dissects music, people are too self entitled and full of themselves tbh

Logic's album is truly amazing, from the lyrics to the intricate beats and use of musical instruments. I feel that in comparison to other rap artists and especially in rap music today, "garage beats" or just basic hard dumb machine beats are extremely prevalent. I love how Logic strays away from these norms and established unique tracks that adhere to his musical ability as well. Now, I would not call my self a hip hop head, to be honest I know very little about this type of music, how ever I am very knowledgable about music and have come to appreciate many different genres, rap music being one. The first time I listened to Logic's album, my brother showed it to me and I was fascinated. The way his flow seamlessly glided over the tracks left me mesmerized. Since then I have listened to the album many times and have listened to many interviews by him. I feel that through "Under Pressure" he takes listeners on an emotional roller coaster of his past. His songs are both lyrically and visually appealing, while listening to them made me feel as though I was a fly on the wall to his life - growing up in section 8 housing where violence and narcotics were more than prevalent. I give this album a 10/10 because of how advanced and technical it is. How it tells a story and means something so real and so relatable to many people around the world. I feel as the young man Logic is, he is going to go no where but up and I can't wait to follow that journey.

4:46 that “horrible stock children cheering sound” on the end of the track is a shoutout to Mac Miller, Mac had the same sound on his first album K.I.D.S, and is the one that gave logic the inspiration to make his Young Sinatra mixtape. So much for being “the internets busiest music nerd”
