One of my favorite fish to catch. Total different approach from the predatory fish, but such a fun fight when you're getting a 20lb+ monster on the line. Oh, and a catch net is extremely helpful when dealing with this species. Otherwise, use shallow shores to your advantage. Oh, and while slimy, they still don't smell as bad as bluegill. I don't know what it is with bluegill, but they're the smelliest of any fish I've come across.

Don’t know if you ever want to fish for carp again, but if you do, consider using a hair rig. Carp are picky suckers and they spit bait if they feel a hook. Also chumming (if legal where your at) is a great strategy.

Like I always say, pound for pound carp fight as hard if not harder than cat fish. Load up 30 - 50 pound braid. Sturdy hook. String about 5 - 6 corn bits on the hook. Pack bread around the hook. Cast it. When you have one on, wear that sucker out. Let it fight as long as it wants. When you do flip it up, flip it as far away from the water as possible. My biggest carp fight was 10 minutes. About 10-12 pounder.

I use Aunt Milles honey white bread. Ball it up on a no. 5 treble hook and fish on bottom. Make sure bread covers all the hook. They will feel the hook and spit it otherwise. Sometimes Chum water with corn. Look for areas of mud being kicked up. That's carp eating off the bottom.

Where I live, carp is very common for me to hook onto. All my life I have both caught and lost carp due to line breaking. However, now that I am older I use stronger line and catch the carp nearly every time I hook onto one. The longest time I have fought a carp was for a half an hour on a rod that wasn't meant for carp fishing as it was a 10 pound monofilament line. The carp was pregnant weighing about 32 pounds, very big.

Pro Tip LOJO. Those fish are nothing like Bass. You cant just set the hook and straight reel them in. You have to tire them out first by giving the a fight and allowing them to peel drag. Once the fish stops bolting, you can reel them in.

Lojo if your carp fishing you need a landing net, when you play the fish you need to let it run but keep it under tension a good way to wear the fish out is to use side strain so if he runs left turn it to the right and viseversa. I have spent 30 mins bringing in a carp in on light gear. Those grass carp are a powerful fish but they can be very spooky and hard to catch. We usually hair rig corn in the UK.

Next time try fishing without a bobber, they won't drop it as easy. also try just using a small hook, light line and no weight because carp are very line and weight shy. Try sight fishing for them by just casting about 1-2 feet in front of a carp and waiting until you either see your bait disappear or you see the white flash of their lips. I have a video of catching some big ones out of a river just like that and those were the techniques I used. Awesome vid though those carp are AWESOME to catch.
