LOL!! True! Rather ironical, when you think of the kind of family Zuko had! But on a serious note, I like the realism of the story, in that just because Aang and Toph did a lot to save the world and help rebuild the four nations, it did not necessarily mean that they were excellent parents in their own right. They shouldered very great burdens and their children paid a price for that, as Tenzin, Bumi and Kya observed about their father.
@JCasR310 жыл бұрын
Zuko had a tyrannical and abusive father, he saw the worst and chose to be different. Aang like most Air Nomads didn't have traditional parents or a family structure to learn from. Lin has one of the most tragic backstories in Legend of Korra. All the people she loved- Tenzin, Su, Toph- left her. Even Aang and Sokka, who I imagine she loved like fathers, died. All she had left (before she made up with her family and ex) was her job, so it's easy to see why she was so dedicated that she became chief, arrested the Avatar, and got invited to multiple world-leader meetings.

Since Toph always had a strictly confined childhood, she wanted to do the opposite for her own children. It's interesting to see how each of her daughters decided to go about having so much freedom on their hands. Lin wanted to make her mother proud and joined the police just like her mother because she thought following in her mother's footsteps would make Toph happy, but this actually made Toph dissapointed because Lin did what would make her mother happy and not herself. Suyin took advantage of having so much freedom and dabbled in illegal affairs as a result. She kind of had young Toph's attitude of "living in the moment" and "doing whatever she wanted". I just find it so intriguing how their personalities reflect on Toph's decision to give them what she didn't have as a child for their own sake, but ultimately it didn't turn out the way she had hoped.

Fascinating how Zuko raised the most well adjusted child out of the next generation of the Gaang.
@fangirlme333 жыл бұрын
Makes sense on a general common sense level and to a degree a psychological one as well. Kids tend to try not to make the same mistakes their parents made, so it is easy to end up being the direct opposite of their parents. Toph had suffocating, restrictive, and strict parents who tried to control who she is and make her fit *their mold. So with her kids, she decided to avoid that entirely by giving them the freedom she wanted as a child to be whoever they are without any guidance or any rules. With Zuko, he always had a kindhearted personality that his mom and Uncle Iroh nurtured and protected in him, while his father, the source of a lot of his issues, was an narcissistic abuser who had no mercy and never chose to exercise empathy or compassion towards others. In turn, Zuko managed to keep and impart the values his good parental figures gave him to his children, and he learned not to do the things his dad did that made him feel terrible as a child. Without the proper wisdom to temper that "don't be like my own parents" attitude, those that become parents don't keep the parts their parents did right; they just do the opposite. Any parenting style needs balance. Parents need to walk a fine line with freedom and rules, structure and independence, and the ability to make mistakes on your own and learn from them tempered with the expectation of keeping behavior in line with certain ideals, hopefully good ones like integrity, humility, respect, etc. (This isn't easy to do of course.) It is easier to do these things when you have a healthy and good family, like Katara and Sokka did, or if you have some good parental figures in your life, like Zuko did. I haven't watched enough of LOK to speak about Aang's parenting, but based on what little I know, it makes sense to me personally that he might have favored Tenzin too much. This is not to say that he is a terrible parent, but he wasn't a perfect or great one. A nomadic lifestyle to what I know probably takes on a more communal parenting approach, where a child can be supported by and learn from one adult what another might not be as great in. There could have been some subconscious assumption on his part that any of his shortcomings would be rounded out by his found family, though his friends now adults also have their own share of responsibilities and troubles to deal with. Also he had a lot of responsibility from the entire world to bear, and it makes sense that that didn't help his parenting much.

It actually make sense. Ozai basically kidnap Zuko's mother and force her to have Azula + he is super terrible to him. This make Zuko not likely to look him up as an example of a good father. Then there is uncle Iroh for him when he is in exile. I would say he has a perfect set up to become a good parent since he has both good and bad example around him for cross examination. Then Aang not only had a rough chilhood, he doesn't have anyone as Air Nomad left alive for him as an example to be a good dad. Toph is more or less the same. They being not an ideal parent for thier kids are not suprise for its setting. What I have complain is that this idea is not very well elaborate in the show. Which is a shame consider it not bad for a set up.

I feel so bad for Lin. It really bothers me that NO ONE calls out Suyin for the comment she made to Lin later on, when Suyin, bitter and annoyed because Lin refuses to allow Suyin to belittle her pain by sweeping everything under the rug - snarks to Suyin about "No wonder Tenzin dumped you".) This was DIRTY and UNNECESSARILY hurtful. Lin was only attacking Suyin with legitimate gripes. Meanwhile Suyin goes under the belt. She has NEVER apologized for SCARRING Lin, both emotionally as well as physically. Suyin actually seemed to be REWARDED; she got a loving family, is rich, is FOUNDER OF A CITY, etc. Meanwhile Lin has never gotten over the pain caused by both her mother and sister. Not to mention she was ABANDONED by a boyfriend who dumped her AS SOON AS something he deemed "better" came along. Tenzin claims they had been "growing apart for years" but if he felt that way, why didn't he sit Lin down and talk to her? It's clear they weren't in the same page. I blame Toph for this. It seems like she put all her expectations onto poor Lin, making her carry the weight of "family honor" while Suyin danced around like the little hooligan she was, hanging with PETTY street THUGS and STEALING. Yet Toph covered for her hooligan child when really Suyin could have used this punishment as a wake up call. Lin never got the justice she deserved. She just gets sidelined by everyone, written off as "bitter" and expected to just "get over" her pain. It's clear Suyin never really grows up. As we see, Opal and Kuvira had many of the same issues Lin and Suyin had. In this case, Suyin allowed Kuvira to belittle and attack Opal, who had NO BENDING ABILITIES at that time.

Exactly. Suyin it seems to treat her sons better than her daughters. She immediately forgives Baatar Jr. despite his role in Kuvira's regime (he was practically the Emperor consort.) and pulls some strings to get him a more lenient sentence. She allows her youngest sons to come with her kill their older sister figure in her sleep but she never contemplated that she would have to kill Baatar Jr as well since leadership would transfer to him in the event of Kuvira's untimely demise. She also quickly dismisses Kuvira's feelings that she was never really apart of her family which is true given that does not introduce Kuvira as her child in Book 3. When Lin states that it must be a nightmare to have five kids she doesn't bother to correct Lin that she adopted a sixth. Kuvira's last name isn't Beifong so she never formally adopted her. She isn't present in any of Su's family photos and is not present at Opal's farewell dinner. She never reprimanded Kuvira for smashing Opal's dollhouse or Opal for calling Kuvira a stray animal that no one wants. Opal was scared to be open with her mother regarding leaving Zaofu. Su states that she views Kuvira as something like a daughter to Korra not she is my adopted daughter.

i still hate how the episode portrayed Lin as being "in the wrong" without having Su get any kind of comeuppance whatsoever. Lin DID her JOB! she did EVERYTHING she was supposed to do, and she did it right. and Su gets bailed out of jail while Toph gets mad at Lin for doing what she was supposed to do while ALSO being a major hypocrite by keeping her daughter shielded from the law. and yet Su gets the perfect life, and "moves on" and WOW isn't she so enlightened for keeping her eyes on the future and believing in moving on from the past? yeah, except she NEVER took responsibility for what she did in the past. did she even say sorry for scarring her sister for life? and when Lin calls her out on it, Su makes it seem like she's the one in the wrong for "not getting over it." and on TOP of that, she made a really low comment on Lin and Tenzin's relationship. and despite all this bullshit, Lin still finds it in her heart to let go and reconcile with her sister. her karma-dodging, gas-lighting, responsibility avoiding, holier than thou sister. like, seriously. Toph grew up sheltered from peers her own age (up until the Gaang), and had her capabilities severely underestimated by her parents. So she obviously did everything to avoid falling into the same pattern as her parents, by limiting expectations and granting Lin and Suyin too much freedom. It’s not that Toph “didn’t care” for Lin and Suyin, she just didn’t mind how they chose to express themselves and didn’t think to mind their different hobbies and skill-sets. I’m not saying Toph is in the right, and I totally agree that Suyin was being a disobedient brat. But I kind of understand why. I’m not trying to defend her actions, but she’s a teenage girl who has minimal expectations, too much freedom and not a whole lot of parental guidance. It’s not that surprising that she joined a gang at twelve-years-old.

I can understand Toph not wanting her daughter to be in jail with the criminals she put away and Aang wanting to preserve the Airbending tradition by teaching Tenzin but still. Honestly, Aang favoring Tenzin was to be expected. Aang was always a little resentful that he was the last Airbender. And having two kids who didn't inherit his air bending abilities probably bothered him a lot. So when Tenzin displayed airbending abilities, it's not unexpected to think that Aang focused on Tenzin to carry on the Air Nomad legacy, which ended putting a lot of unnecessary stress on the poor guy, while also leaving Bumi and Kya neglected. As much as it pains me to see it, I did expect as much. And when it was revealed, I wasn't too shocked. I've seen parents in real life favoring the child that looks the most like them, so it's not unrealistic. I'm just happy that the siblings don't hold any deep-rooted resentment towards each other, like Lin and Su.

0 Aang’s and Zuko’s parenting style doesn’t seem too surprising once you think about it. Aang was raised by monks and has no concept of a two-parent family in his culture. It was also made clear that he desperately grasped on the hope of restoring Air Nomad culture as seen in ATLA when he got extremely mad when the Northern Air Temple was industrialized. Even though Zuko had a huge leadership role for his nation, Aang had the greatest leadership role not only for the whole world, but also for spiritual balance; that leaves little to no time for family matters even if he wanted to be a more attentive father. It’s a sad reality. Zuko on the other hand, despite having a terrible father, lucked out on having a mother who nurtured him as well as Iroh who was very wise, loving, humble and treated Zuko as his son after Lu Ten died. In the comics, we also learn that Zuko was always a gentle and kindhearted boy as a small child, so much so that his father thought he would be a non-bender at first since many fueled their firebending out of volatile emotions.

Not that that dynamic was the best from the beginning OR that it would’ve been any better if Toph put Su in a jail cell literally alongside all the criminals she and Lin had put away while taking Lin’s side on this. I never will never understand why Lin was meant to be "unreasonable" for not wanting to reconcile with her sister or mother. In this entire affair she's the only one who isn't in the wrong and I get the feeling this isn't the first incident, just the most extreme one, of something like this. Add to the fact that it's clear Toph barely cares about her when you see her in book 4 and Su never properly apologised for permanently scarring her sister just for doing her job. I just don't get it.

I can definitely sympathise with Lin in the overall show. she did everything perfectly. taking after Toph by becoming a cop, enforcing the law amazingly, and being able to raise her younger sister mostly by herself. yet her story is genuinely so tragic. her emotions and feelings always being belittled by others because everyone else is so used to her being this “bitter” emotionless woman. being called selfish by her younger sister yet she was the one that sacrificed herself the most for the people she loved. Becoming abandoned by the love of her life once he found someone he deemed “better” than her because the other was willing to have a child with him. But she still seems like the one getting punished for being the most unproblematic, heart of gold woman ever. she learnt the hard way that you don’t know how strong you really are until being strong is your only option. the last time she ever trusted someone she got her heart broken then her face permanently scarred. yet people still can’t see why she’s barricaded herself behind invisible walls, lmfao

I think it was actually a good part of Avatar to show that even our most beloved characters such as Toph can have their own shortcomings. She even just committed corruption by letting her daughter go unpunished which was a pretty dirty move especially since one of their main objectives in ATLA was to remove a corrupt empire. I understand how some fans may think of this as trashy writing, that they ruined the characters we loved by making them do shitty things such as Aang and Toph being neglectful parents but I think it makes it more realistic and relatable. Real people aren't perfect and the main characters of ATLA are no exception. There are many good, decent people we love in our lives that would at times make bad decisions that can be really shitty but we try to get past those just like how in the end Toph wanted to make things right with her daughters.

Lin didn’t want to met up, but did Toph or Su ever go to the city to try and reconcile? Lin by all accounts is a functioning adult with a job and a life of her own that she built up by herself since Toph and Su left her (yes they left her). She has no need to reconcile and Su has never once tried going to her to reconcile. The least she could have done is try taking the punishment and get arrested for those crimes of assaulting a police officer, robbery/accessory to robbery, and resisting arrest. But no, keep living away from her, and never try approaching. Make Lin have to travel to you. That’s how reconciliation works.

The way she insulted Lin when Lin refused to forgive her too Apparently Suyin doesn't understand that it's Lin's choice whether to forgive or not
@loren5432 Жыл бұрын
I feel like Lin acts too much as a vicim though. Yeah, Su is an ass because she caused literally everything, from scarring her sister's face permanently to making her mother break some rules due to her wanting to "have fun" (and most likely causing her to retire the following year because of that), and yeah, her apology always came off as insincere, but it always feels like Lin wants a medal for being treated badly, especially over something that by the time of the show, it happened decades ago. She has all the reasons to stay mad at her sister and not accept her apology (and her mother's too), but from what we've seen in the show, it's not like she's willing to at least hear Su out before lashing at her like a kid (even though she's a grown woman) and judging her even though Su (supposedly) learned about her actions and "changed" for the better. And it doesn't ends there, because she also directs her anger at people who had nothing to do with her dysfunctional family drama. Overall, I think Toph is the one who's mostly at fault here, yet everyone forgets that she exists here. Not only was she a neglectful mother for both of them, but she also coddled Su's behavior by breaking those papers, and while I get the reasoning behind as to why putting your own child in jail could be risky for a Chief of Police, she could've still punished her in other ways, such as giving her a separate jail cell from the rest of the prisoners (which is less bad compared to simply sending her off to live with her grandparents).

how ironic. Toph had been a scammer then become a police cheif.

Some people don't seem to know this: Aang wasn't a bad dad, he just was focused on something bigger than his entire family, and because of that, he didn't have time for all his kids, but loved them regardless. TOPH is a BAD mom. She actively dismissed her rule following daughter Lin, and continuously helped Suyin get away with her rebellious behavior and troublemaking. She was a bad mother figure, which makes sense for her as a person due to her upbringing and life in general.

Sending Suyin to her grandparents is a smart choice knowing how strict they are. Toph wanted to be the opposite since she hated how restricting her parents are but realize that's what her younger daughter needs. It's good to see how much Su has grown and is able to provide freedom for her family without spoiling them.
