Honestly, it's probably easier to explain that The Frilly Frock Brigade has nothing to do with the military than to explain that the fashion has nothing to do with *the book.*

When you're talkin about people staring and judging for how you dressed and how you ignore it. It made me think about what I do in those situations. I'm not a Lolita, I'm more into decora. but I sometimes notice people looking at me strangely, but I usually don't really care. I have autism and I'm extremely socially awkward and I'm always worried people are judging me about what I'm doing or how I'm acting. but when I'm wearing Decora or any other fun fashion. I'm not really worried about people looking at me, cuz they're probably looking and judging me at what I'm wearing and not how I'm acting. It's giving me so much more confidence.
@cheerfulcaptain50775 жыл бұрын
I'm also really socially awkward and I feel too self conscious to go outside wearing my pieces but it's really nice to read that someone with similar problems to mine enjoys and feels more confident wearing what they want! You've inspired me, thank you :)

That's a good attitude to have! I haven't worn my full Lolita coord in public YET, but for Halloween I wore an all-black "Lolita-esque" outfit to work, with sapphire blue satin bows and religious symbols for jewelry.. with my modest petticoat under my knee-length ruffled skirt. It was not too over- the-top and we were having a potluck lunch, so it was work-appropriate. After leaving the office I went to a local mall where they do trick-or-treat, just to see all the cute kids and people in costume. A few people complimented me on how I was dressed, saying very kind things. I came to the conclusion that people enjoy seeing others beautifully dressed.. it may startle the brain for a moment if it's different.. but that's a natural response to things out of the ordinary. So maybe a stare, if its not accompanied by rudeness, may not be a bad thing. It could be the visual equivalent of stopping to enjoy the fragrance of a rose. I like to think I can bring people happiness by the way I'm dressed.
@AzuraRose5 жыл бұрын
I'm autistic and physically disabled (use a cane most of the time), wear goth stuff generally including the odd gothic lolita coord, and yeah pretty much the same for me. I'm awkward and I still notice people staring at me all the time because it's hard not to notice *everything* for me. These days though because I've grown more confident in expressing myself and more happy with my appearance I don't super care. I do a quick assessment of the staring folks for safety reasons (I've been actually assaulted or stalked before and I think that's mostly a visible disability while female-appearing thing) but it doesn't effect my self-esteem at all. I'm glad you're getting more confident in your style!!

Not gonna mention her name here 'cause I don't wanna promote to her store but you'd probably be able to find it with some googling (the controversy mostly went down last summer). Just a heads up if you were actually thinking of purchasing from her shop.

As a person who doesn't wear any out-of-conventional fashion, but REALLY appreciates the artistry of different styles I do want to ask you (and any other lolitas/alt fashion people) if it is possible to be polite at looking at people? I mean, sometimes the clothes and styling are AMAZING or super detailed and yeah, I would totally love to figure out the little details of it, as it happens with tattoos as well, but as a stranger I do feel it is rude af to just... plainly stare at someone. So I really want to know y'all opinions. I'm pretty sure it depends on personalities and all, but I wonder if it has been discussed as a community and if there is a way to not look like a creepy ass person and be able to appreciate fashion hah

I feel the exact way. If I see someone wear something really beautiful and out of the ordinary, I'm probably gonna stare at them. Cuz when am I gonna see that look again?! I don't know, like why wouldn't I look at you if you were wearing something that pretty? It's definitely confusing.

This documentary inspired me to get up and put on my dream dress that I recently got, but have nowhere to wear to, and that still isn't perfectly accessorized yet, and just... sit around in it, imperfections and all. It still feels whole somehow. As for the music, I was just excited to hear Siouxie and the Banshees. I've never seen the Marie Antoinette movie because I don't care for that historical figure. Speaking of Siouxie, I've been a goth for so long that I've stopped noticing when people stare too, especially because I tend to show a lot of skin on top of that. I fail to notice so much that people I know have tried to talk to me on the street and I've just completely overlooked them! It is nice when people do manage to get my attention and say that they like my look. I'm not dressed like this for them, but it's good to know that not everyone who stares is thinking something negative. They might just not know how to approach you to say something kind, and that's a comforting thought.

i've been really loving this channel! i'm looking into getting into lolita. i love the fashion and designing coords seems really fun, but i'm running into a bit of trouble finding things in my size. i'm very tall, AND my waist is over 100cm. it seems like the only options out there are buying from very expensive etsy stores that are not even always exactly lolita, buying full shirring brand pieces and hoping you can squeeze into it, or trying to make it yourself. it doesn't help that most resources i've found for plus sized lolitas are SUPER out of date. i'd love some up-to-date tips and resources for Big and Tall lolitas!

There is alot of talk about being stared at while being in lolita and I just wanted to share my opinion as someone who usually wears punk/gothic fashion but started to also wear lolita. I get stared at in both style quite alot but in the punk fashion people look more negatively at me while in the lolita fashion I get alot more compliments and kids smiling at me. People are nicer to me when I dress lolita! I've got people compliments in punk clothes but usually it's other alternative people (or oddly enough grandma). So while both fashion attracts attention, it's two different types of attention.

I'm really trying to take everything in and like with a regular glance at a well turned out human in a nice but regular outfit, you can grab everything into your eyeballs but with lolita there's just so much and I need more eyeball time to take it in. I just want to say something; I'm not lolita, but even I get stared at just for being myself. I know how uncomfortable that can be but what I've learned is they typically don't stare because they're hating what you look like or are wearing, it's typically because they admire it. I've had a few people stare then run into them later and pay me a compliment. Typically, they're intimidated by how unapologetically you you're being and just don't know how to express that. We judge ourselves enough as it is, don't worry about others because you've probably said worse things to yourself than anyone could say about you. Just love yourself and what makes you you. 💕

Very good call on not playing the video with the soundtrack intact! That would have been SO many copyright strikes! XD I recognized the "Marie Antoinette" stuff immediately, but I was on a bit of a sabbatical from the fashion during the height of its use and abuse by the comm, so it wasn't exactly cringe, so much as it felt low effort. They already used a different Siouxsie Sioux song earlier in the doc, and I feel like they would have been better off being inspired by the MA soundtrack, using alternate tracks from the same/similar bands, rather than lifting straight from the film. Also my condolences on the title. They ought to have googled around a bit before settling on the doc name, alas. It seems like they were working SO HARD on making some aspects of the doc really stellar that other important elements weren't given the attention that they needed. :/
