In this video I switch out the original pickups from a Squier Strat and replace them with the Lollar Pickups Blackface Strat Pickups.

@@jessesmith2906 yes, fantastic guitar. I've not played the jazzmaster pickups from them. I'm sure they'll be fantastic. Although the standards in that guitar are pretty damn good though

Hi, I noticed you have the pickup height on the bass side higher than the trebble side. Is there a reason for that with these pickups? I have a set in my pro strat but the opposite height settings. Just indtalled them so wondering if I should set up like you have it.

Hey Kevin. Thanks for commenting. It wasn't an intention to do this, you have a keen eye. Slight differences in string height don't affect things too much tbh but generally the way people do it is higher on treble side and lower on the bass. The scratch plate was a little thin on this guitar and there wasn't as much room for the Pickups and wires as I'd have liked, so the scratch plate ended up a little bowed after installation, which may have made the angle look strange to you from in the video. The pickup height across strings doesn't matter too much once you get into a close enough but not too close spot to be within the magnetic field. It's then closer to the thin strings that thick ones due to that reason, think mass of string. The Lollars on the crunch channel make it sound treble boosted, so nice.

I think the crunch was my favourite sound. The squier did limit the full sound of these pickups but the difference in the room was more obvious for sure. Lollar don't seem to make a bad pickup it seems haha

The cheap pickups are better. They have less bottom. They will cut thru the mix better. The lack of lows and the brittle highs will create overtones and pinch harmonics better. Also the highs will punch distortion better. I love and own lollarp90s and they are transcendental !

I was really surprised by the quality of the squier pickups, they were great. They were making strange noises though and the feedback on overdrive sound wasn't the best. Just these little things. I found the Lollars to have a much more even sound and consistent across. I see your point about cutting through though. I'm yet to use the Lollar P90s. I might have to add them to a future video. Have you compared them to other P90s?

@@FretSuccess i replaced bridge p90 from Gibson les paul 56 vos with Lollar p90 and loved it. i then replaced neck pu and the guitar is now my go to. the best lollar is their Chicago Steel, incredible. i think the difference in guitar sound is bedroom tone vs band. if you jam by yourself the full sound works. but take that full sound to a band mix and you will get stomped. sometimes a cheap microphonic pu w/o a lot of bass works great ala Ry Cooder.

You’re probably better off with Fender pickups since it’s already been proven that they sit well in song mixes. That way you have peace of mind
