So sincerely presented, and yet much of what you say is simply incorrect. Strata isn't going to be everyone's cup pf tea aesthetically, at the same time, many like it. It divides opinion as modern, unconventional architecture often does. Ugliest building - if that's what they decided that represents a view of some self-appointed arbiters of architectural aesthetics. I don't share that opinion, but then again, if I did I probably wouldn't live very high up in the building. Your major inaccuracy concerns the turbines. They aren't fans, to present them as such in a "London Architecture Series" is, diplomatically speaking, puzzling. Each of the turbines blades are 9m in diameter, and when they are functioning they do indeed make a noise. That noise can be heard within a conical shaped space from the top of the building to a ground radius which is not insignificant. However, I can absolutely tell you that there no noise from the turbines can be heard inside the building, nor is there any vibration that can be felt vibration. I don't doubt the quote cited concerning operational hours, but I'm confident that this was for concerns for those living in the vicinity of the building, not within it. The potential electricity generation from the turbines is but one element of the eco-friendly credentials of the building. The building is incredibly well insulated and I can honestly say I have never turned on any heating in the many years I have lived here. The lifts are controlled by computer to allocate demand most efficiently - which does not mean most quickly. The lighting in the communal areas are energy efficient and triggered by sensors, so most of the time the lift lobby and corridors are in darkness. There is also a communal water heating system which is more energy efficient than each of the 400+ flats heating the water independently. Could the building have done better, absolutely, but to characterise it as an "economic failure" seems to be an irrational and untenable conclusion. So, if its not noise and vibration within the building that has meant the turbines are not in operation, what IS the reason? It's actually simply a question of economics. The cost of the electricity is currently (and has been since the building was completed) cheaper than the cost of the maintenance contract for the turbines. Solar panels on the back (south facing) facade of the building would have been much cheaper to instal and much cheaper to maintain and probably would have provided the additional eco-friendly credential that the turbines fail to. Liked your presentation style though Harry!
