Honestly, I'm happy all these treasures are being properly taken care off, preserved, honored, etc. The museum is a proper grand place to house them.

E George I'm guessing you STOLE everything you 'belong'? Since everything, down from your laptop (the world wide web was invented by the British, you nitwit troll - jealous!) to the speck of dust on your hand comes from somewhere else.

+Anarchy S Many of these objects were also looted by people within the countries of origin. But no matter who took them, they were often spirited away across several borders and then purchased by a series of private collectors. Those individuals later sold them to museums for vast sums, maintaining that the objects were legally acquired. This makes it difficult to pinpoint the true origins of artifacts or the validity of claims to ownership. Where they are now is probably best, they are well looked after and protected, and restored to their original beauty when absolutely necessary. Besides, it's not like any money is being made from it, and people still get to learn basic history without having to pay for it.

@clement27806 жыл бұрын
Yes where are the british artifacts, artworks, musical scores, etc? Likewise why does rick steves, of whom i remain a fan, not cover more austrian and german works in respectively kunsthistorisches and belvedere vienna museums and pinakotheken Munich? Rijksmuseum is overwhelming dutch flemish works, prado spanish, louvre orsay orangerie French, uffizi vatican borghese accademia bargello brera are mostly if not quite entirely italian? Hermitage also lacks slavic russian, ukrainian, polish, czech, bulgarian, croatian, serbian, macedonian, belarusian art, but more than makes up for that in being a royal imperial palace and residence, russian museum is more in tune with russia.

Arab invaders now occupy the land known as Egypt.. you people are saying these Arabs have more rights to these Egyptian artifacts than the British. You'd rather they all return to Cairo where they can make money for a Muslim/Arab goverment? Or in the British museum where everyone can visit and see them for FREE?

Like the Parthenon Marbles? Like the Rosetta Stone? Its plundered loot and your explanation is s typical justification given when wanting to hold onto relics of another nation's history. Shame, shame, shame.
@emp86538 жыл бұрын
The Parthenon marbles were bought by the British, not looted, therefore they were not in the wrong, but the people selling them - and based on the state of the Parthenon and Greece's financial state, it was probably for the best, as they would not have been protected. Second of all, the Rosetta Stone wasn't even in it's place of origin when the stone was taken and in the past it was even used as building material. Had it not been taken, then chances are it would have taken longer for someone to translate it. Both these objects are now extremely well protected, free to see for all who are curious, and are probably in better shape than they could have ended up. It's not as if anyone's making a profit on them, or anyone's having to pay to see them. The Rosetta Stone has been there for over 200 years, the Greek Marbles almost 200, they are still in great condition.
@kirancourt8 жыл бұрын
No, they were looted and its typical of the colonial plunderer to say that such objects are better off in their own care. www.independent.co.uk/voices/why-theres-no-place-like-home-for-lord-elgins-looted-treasure-1287312.html
@emp86538 жыл бұрын
Not once in that link does it say that the British looted the Greek marbles, so why do you keep saying they did? And that "Colonial plunderer" bought the marbles, they didn't take them by force. Before you go off spouting rubbish, actually find something that backs up your name calling. It's making you seem very childish and blind to the obvious truth, that being that the British never "looted" the Greek marbles, but bought them off of Elgin.
