I was in terminal 5 the whole time. If I had to go to a different terminal, I would've missed the flight and would have to stay in London an extra day. It might be the most inefficient security process in the world at the moment.

Yes. Heathrow you need at least 3 hours. Those generous bottles of wine British Airways hands out, can’t be saved for your hotel room, if it doesn’t fit the 3 oz, and your liquids bag (take the liquor, not the wine! 😜). You have to be at your gate, 30 mins before your flight. If you’re not there, you can’t take that flight. Last year, I had 1.5 hours. The flight left late, but we made up some time. I was flying from SFO…as soon as we get off the plane, there’s staff telling us to run! Wait, what?! Run! Run! And, they’re showing us where to go. Is there a bomb threat? No, because my flight was in almost an hour, and we had to be there in 30 mins. Didn’t make it, so I was stuck at Heathrow for 7 hours. 😡

If you ask for a hand search for your family not wanting to be exposed by the scanning machines, they will delay you in order to call over a specific officer to lecture you on how private and safe the machines are before conducting the search(es). The process is the punishment.
