When was the last time you stayed in a youth hostel? It probably didn’t look like this one - London’s first ‘capsule hostel’. It’s a dormitory with just enough room for a bed and everything you need inside a self-contained pod. They've been popular in Japan for years - reporter Thomas Magill goes to Borough to see if they'll take off here.

The way London's going, you will live in there as a young professional and pay £650 a month. In Zone 4.

When talking London zones, it's more of a reference to the underground train map. Mainly used for trains and busses when traveling.

£30 is way over priced for what you get with this capsule. With a couple of months of advanced booking, you can get a private room with your own bathroom, double bed and TV at one of the central-ish Travelodges.

I think its the deliberate transient and temporary nature of the clientele why that price will work. I think for that price breakfast, and a decent enough non-fancy dinner should be included myself. That would mitigate the otherwise added expense of food cost, and sweeten the appeal of the 30 pound a day price.

I don't really think this would work well outside of Japan. I actually stay in these every-time I go to Tokyo, and I immediately know when there is a foreigner staying, because they are loud and inconsiderate. Granted it's nothing a pair of earplugs couldn't fix, but I guess this is a better option than paying out the butt for an hotel that most of us only use to sleep in. About time, but interested if it will work.

Was thinking that, though to be fair it's still quieter than a hostel which is basically a hospital ward with more beds. If the person in the next cubicle is talking softly on a phone that solid partition would muffle it perfectly, a shabby curtain would not - that's why hostels are hell.

Yes. Really. Very fancy too. In Tokyo they actually have an industry for capsule hotels the one i stayed is basically akin to a 5 star modern hotel, just minus the bedroom. (google first cabin tokyo). and only 40gbp too. this london one wouldn't even stand a chance against the competition in japan. (google other capsule chains too just to give a big picture: 9 hours, prime pod ginza and first cabin these are the big names). you would be VERY surprised.

my issue is that those kinds of places aren’t really handicap friendly. If you’re someone with impaired mobility say a wheel chair you’re forced to get a standard hostel room at the standard rate. Unless of course they have capsule rooms that are designated for handicap people.
