Edit: Right around 1:17:33 is where we used to wave to the northbound trains!

In old days there was a shop keeper with his shop near the circular road junction or circus. He sold fancy collars, known as piccadils, so the area became known as Piccadilly Circus. And as you probably know the original station was a sub surface with surface station buildings. The original railway was called the Piccadilly and Brompton railway before the amalgamation into the integrated tube network it became. Keep up the good work, your old trains do better than our worn out metro trams here in the north east.
@Puckoon20025 ай бұрын
Slight amendment: The area became known as Piccadilly before the circus was even thought about. the thoroughfare whose name first appeared in 1626 as Piccadilly Hall, named after a house belonging to one Robert Baker, a tailor famous for selling piccadills, or piccadillies, a term used for various kinds of collars. The street was known as Piccadilly by 1743. Piccadilly Circus was created in 1819, at the junction with Regent Street, which was then being built under the planning of John Nash on the site of a house and garden belonging to a Lady Hutton; the intersection was then known as Regent Circus South (just as Oxford Circus was known as Regent Circus North). The tube station was opened on 10 March 1906, on the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway, and on the Piccadilly line in December of that year.

So you mentioned about the train ahead of you. On the Victoria line the trains can be running with barely a train length between them, so the driver of the train behind can be running in constant view of the tail lights of train in front. And if a train is slow leaving a station for any reason, the delay immediately backs up to all the following trains down the line, because there are hardly any gaps to take up the slack. It's amazing how tight the scheduling is.

You were mentioning that you were running late but I think your lack of "we are being held at a red signal" announcements illustrates this was a smooth trip. As a passenger riding in the back, I would have been quite happy that we come into each station, people get off, people get on, we go again.

what is the procedure when rail gap indicators are illuminated?
@dalecharmantravels80573 ай бұрын
You treat it as a red signal and stop. If you are unable to stop then you must proceed completely in to the next section. If you stop across the gap you can liven up the switched off section. So always best to stop before or pass it completely

I found this from the Londonist. I had to know since you asked and my curiosity got the better of me 🤣 Named after the central London street, the name of which derives from the piccadill, a large broad lace collar which was fashionable in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Robert Baker, one of the most successful manufacturers of these, had acquired land in the area on which he built his house, Pikadilly Hall. The Piccadilly Line was opened in December 1906 as the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway; it originally ran from Finsbury Park (already a station on the Great Northern Railway) to Hammersmith. From the start, presumably for the sake of convenience, passengers referred to it as the Piccadilly Railway.

After a bit he got fed up so when asked the "Where you from?" question by chatty strangers he would just say bare-facedly "Sydney, Australia" putting on his best Oz accent. The stranger would nod wisely as if thinking "Yeah, I thought so" and I would just sit there trying not to crack up laughing. This worked a treat and to my knowledge he never got rumbled.

@dalecharmantravels80575 ай бұрын
So the local is for the stopping trains ( district) so they would stop at all stations between Hammersmith and Acton. On the westbound local just after Turnham Green there is a road leading down to Richmond. The fast as the name suggests is for the non stop trains to run fast. Between Acton and Northfields all trains stop at the stations but they still call it the local and fast. It helps identify the exact location of a train or problem

The Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (GNP&BR), also known as the Piccadilly tube, was a railway company established in 1902 that constructed a deep-level underground "tube" railway in London, England. The GNP&BR was formed through a merger of two older companies, the Brompton and Piccadilly Circus Railway (B&PCR) and the Great Northern and Strand Railway (GN&SR). It also incorporated part of a tube route planned by a third company, the District Railway (DR). The B&PCR and the GN&SR were established in 1896 and 1898 respectively, but construction of both railways was delayed while funding was sought. In 1902 the UERL, which already controlled the DR, took control of both companies and quickly raised the funds, mainly from foreign investors, and a certain Charles Tyson Yerkes.

I grew up in and around London so I have that Cockney twang which totally confuses most Americans. You pointed out (pun intended) that the points, between the eastbound Picadilly and District lines, had been taken out between Hammersmith and Baron's Court stations. If that's the case, is there any need for the mercury filled glass tubes, which hang over the Picadilly line just west of Baron's Court, being there? I believe they were installed to prevent District Line trains from entering the tube tunnels between Baron's Court and Earls Court.

I had a quick look. Piccadilly Circus in London gets its name from two sources: Piccadilly: This part of the name comes from a 17th-century tailor named Robert Baker, who made a fortune selling a type of stiff collar called a “piccadill” or “piccadilly.” He built a large house in the area, which became known as Piccadilly Hall, and the name stuck. Circus: The term “circus” comes from the Latin word for “circle.” In this context, it refers to a circular open space at a street junction. Piccadilly Circus was originally designed as a circular traffic junction when it was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly. Piccadilly Circus was named long before the underground station was built. The area was named Piccadilly Circus in 1819 when it was constructed as a circular traffic junction to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly12. The Piccadilly Circus Underground station, on the other hand, opened much later, in 1906
