I've never thought about how we in the UK and Ireland put river before the given name, and Americans after. Whats odd is that reversing it and saying the "River Mississippi" sounds just as odd as the "Thames River".

As a Spanish, English pronuntiation is quite difficult because the rules are often broken. We must study how it sounds although it has no sense for us 🤷🏻‍♀️

If it's any help, I come from 100 miles away in Birmingham, and I get some of these wrong, even though I've often been to London. I say Mari-lebone, which I now know is wrong, and 'Hol-borne'. Also wrong! But if you're in London, you're as likely to talk to a foreigner as to a Londoner, so It's not really that big a problem!

@@arveyilleszender5809 it's a massive European city in terms of population and infrastructure, globally it is a very large city. The best comparison is from the city you live in (empiricial). Besides, the largest Chinese city is just over twice the size, that doesn't make London "very very small". A city like Milan doesn't become "very very small" in comparison to London, as the UK capital is over twice it's size in population.

Mary Le Bone gets me all the time XD - I have never pronounced it that way but it is sooo hilarious when I hear people do. I personally think one of the best ways to get the names right would be to take the Tube. I have noticed that people tend to pronounce names exactly the way the Operator or Automator does on the Tube.

Being brought up in NW6 and not far from Marylebone, we always called it Marrabn. As I got older and worked in offices I managed to stick a little 'l' in the middle and called it Marra-lbn. Never bone on the end. Entertaining video. Thanks.

The Ho-burn and Hole-burn split is pretty 50/50. Most wrongly pronounced is Westminister instead of Westminster or St pancreas instead of st pancras

Goodge Street hit so many memories. My grandma lived in Colindale and we'd take the Northern Line to Goodge Street to visit my great aunt. She lived in Hanson Street so I learned a rather scouse pronunciation as they were from Liverpool and over 50 years in London didn't wipe out their accent.

When I moved to Liverpool, I asked for directions somewhere and was told to go down what sounded like Kuch street. (This was in the early '90s, so no smartphones, and I hadn't yet bought an A-Z street map for Merseyside) I assumed Liverpool had been twinned with some German town or region I wasn't familiar with. But... it was Cook Street.

Both words of Pall Mall (or just The Mall) rhyme with the 'all' sound in 'valley'. It's a short A. Very different to the mall in 'shopping mall' which rhymes with ball.

I was doing pretty well with the pronunciation of place names, until I heard how you should pronounce Holborne and Beauchamp. You can’t really guess those. It was nice to know about the origin of West End, East End and The City. Those names always bothered me. Well now you can say Holborn...all you have to do now is learn how to SPELL it...lol. 'London' is made of many parts, in the middle you have TWO cities, The City of London (the original walled City) and The City of Westminster (both north bank of the Thames), outside of Central London its just called London (London postcode area) then you get the outer London Boroughs and the metropolis of Greater London sprawl (essentially the 020-8xxx-xxxx dialling code area). The boundary of The City is marked by a ring of thirteen Dragons facing outwards and guarding the way in from the N, E, and West....and even from the SOUTH bank side of Blackfriars and London bridges, there is a replica boundary Dragon with the old London Bridge at Lake Havasu City, Arizona! Westminster Cathedral is Londons 3rd Cathedral and most Londoners don't even know that it is made up of two cities, and that 'The City' actually IS a City!

I'd add Gloucester road to the list. I also love how you conveniently omitted all the mispronunciations of Leicester Square :) If you desire for luxury fashion shopping and have the money, you can go from Marylebone Station to another place with a tricky pronunciation: Bicester Village :)

There's a village in Hampshire called Beaulieu (pronounced /ˈbjuːli/). I used to think that nothing can beat it. Now Beauchamp Place /ˈbiːtʃəm/ makes me think "Why do the English do that to the French?"

Generally excellent , but, as a born and bred Londoner I have to take exception with your pronunciation of "Goodge St" and the idea that Chinatown is IN Soho (it's not even inside the Blue Posts)! Finally Beauchamp Place - I, and every Cab driver I've asked since seeing your video, would pronounce this the French way with the P shared as an ending and a beginning. A lot of people call it marlybone. Although considered to be incorrect, no one can be bothered to correct it. IMO The place name should be changed to Marlybone.

I know most of them, but it’s easy to forget the correct pronunciation of Southwark and Holborn. I don’t have trouble remembering how to say Beauchamp, but I admit it makes me cringe a little. As an American, it reminds me of the streets in New Orleans whose names look French but don’t sound French at all.

I was born a brought up in south east London and we pronounced Greenwich a bit like "Grinige", the vowel in the first syllable being more of an short "i" (sounding like the "i" in "in") rather than an "e" sound and the last syllable sounding a bit like the "idge" in "fridge".

London was founded in two places. First the Roman city, 2nd the saxon city, in Middlesex. I use city, but technically London was a town till the victorian days. Tottenham, is named after the Tote, found in Bruce Castle Park. A saxon defence tower. Most English people still pronounce the saxon spellings hence the confusion with modern spellings.

What is represented here is one ‘London’ accent of the pronunciation. In addition, the constantly changing cultural melting pot that is London leads to variations in the way place names are said. I was born and bred in East London (not the East End; where my family later moved to). Having moved away some thirty years ago, the feel and accent of London is now very different.

Not to toot me own horn, but I think I got ALL of em right! I believe it’s because I was born & raised in Georgia USA, & my ways of speaking & accent are very English/Scottish based. My ancestors all came from England or Scotland, & so I was raised hearing things like these. Lots of our pronunciations , town names, & sayings sound very English. I’ve been asked MANY times if I was British because of my accent, especially if I’d been drinking a bit!
