Who can dislike this? Sir Rattle is never RATTLED! Always a consummate director who doesn't have to "command" respect from his orchestras, he just EARNS it!

I played this song in high school, I adored it and we lovingly called it the Jellyfish song with the bassoon parts being so light and bouncy. I don't play anymore but it brings me back to when I loved playing this instrument, it's bittersweet, I loved the instrument but my program made me absolutely hate playing music in general. Makes me want to pick it up again but life is busy and expensive. Anyways! This is a lovely and astounding performance I wish I could have seen!

If Prince Philip were conducting would he jab his fingers like that? Nope, that's the whole point. There is amazing control here, everything is flowing from Rattle's direction. Stunning, the tension, the line, the excitement. Wow.

It, in my opinion, this rendition lacks some fire. I feel that it omits the darkly humorous aspect that I thought Berlioz wanted... I love the versions where the brasses are louder and the march is more emphasized by the bass drum. I have a copy on cd that really satisfies... unfortunately it was burnt back in the days of Napster and I don't know who the orchestra and conductor are.

Your ear needs a LOT of work. This is one of the BEST orchestra/conductor combinations right now, maybe ever. Simon Rattle has his own interpretation of the music, which is a bit more reserved in the tutti section. Nothing wrong with that. Why bash that? I think you are entirely wrong in everything you just stated. Keep practicing.

Sam might be referring to the way it's recorded/produced. There is very little ensemble sound and it is very closely miked. That seems to be the style these days, especially with NY Phil. Orchestras do not sound like this in the hall. However, they do sound like this when you're sitting on stage playing.

@@starwarsjunkie7776 nice copy and paste intro. Your right that Simon can use what ever interpretation, but from an execution standpoint the orchestra is kind of a mess. The horns were extremely out of tune at the beginning, and there were a few moments where time was bad. So in short, YOUR ear needs a lot of work. XD

The brass sound produced here completely misrepresents what Berlioz intended! These modern French horns are wrong. Only surpassed in wrongness by the trombone section. Trombones in Berlioz’s orchestra were of a dramatically smaller bore and brighter! This is like replacing 1963 Corvettes with 1958 Buick Roadmasters! If Berlioz wasn't already dead, this performance would most certainly be the lethal blow that finishes him off! Battle is responsible for this musical fraud!
