Already watched this old video with the lead engineer and this dude has no idea what kind of lemon this engine is becoming. They better get in front of this and start beefing up some parts and changing a few designs because I am now not buying one and I really, really wanted one and I am a 30 year 5.9 Cummins owner thinking about a baby duramax. Blasphemy, I know.

Found out every one with 3.0l diesel should get oil test for excessive wear which allegedly is happening causing excessive timing cam wear which snowballs to other issues. Consider switching to Amsoil which apparently has 6x the lubrication capability. SAE-0W-20-dp0

At next oil change get a sample of your oil and have it tested to see what and what amount of contaminants it contains. Some suggest using Amsoil as there may be a lubrication and thus excessive wear problems among other potential issues causing the problems. Once this gets sorted out I plan on purchase a GMC Denali suv with the 3.0l diesel.

Fingers crossed GM can get a real fix figured out soon and this issue can be put to rest. So far, I’m loving the 3.0 Duramax. @@coachmixer8230 I’ve watched some videos of drags of the 5.3 and 3.0 side by side. The 3.0 pulls away from the 5.3 but would get reeled in by the 6.2. I have 10k on my 21 as of now. I pulled my bass boat with the 6.5’ bed full to the top on a 1600 mile trip. We averaged 20.99mpgs on paper. I regularly get 24-26 on the interstate running 74 with the cruise on. My best has been 33.xx mpgs. I have been a gm tech for 15 of my 22 years working on vehicles. I was hesitant to buy a 3.0 mainly due to the belt for the oil pump. I decided to after researching the complete power plant. I’m extremely happy with mine so far. You have to keep in mind, you always hear the bad louder than the good when it comes to issues with any product. Whether it’s vehicles or any other product consumers use. I bought my ‘21 Sierra in June. It did the long crank, no start thing twice during the first month of ownership. Like most others, the second push of the button resulted in a perfectly fine start. I had my truck in for its first oil change 10 days ago. After telling the service manager about the issue he had me bring the truck back 3 days later for a computer upgrade. The truck seems fine. The only difference I’ve noticed since the upgrade is that it seems to crank a half-second or so longer when starting. Other owners should check to see if their vehicles need the upgrade.

So a couple things, the exciter wheel does not engage the crank shaft and cause it to turn, exciter wheel has a single purpose and that is to excite the cam shaft sensor via the Hall effect. So if ther is a bent wheel it must be during manufacture ring somehow, nothing in engine should contact the wheel. All that being said, I have a 2021 Silverado that is 7 months old and I have had a crank no start 6 times, I simply press the button to stop it the. Press again and it starts right up, so for me it is unlikely I have a damaged exciter, mine is likely a software issue, but it has only happened about once a month

My 2021 Sierra 3.0 diesel had the bent camshaft reluctor wheel replaced. Total 47+ days in the shop. Your picture on KZbin is my vehicle. One day after I got it back it went into a fail-to-start overcrank fault. Dealer mechanic now thinks it is a fuel pump issue not related to the camshaft relutor problem. Towed in again, then it waited for 3 weeks to try and get a new ECU and the dealer finally bought it back with only 500 miles on it and I got another one just like it. Ive put 6000 miles on the new one and it just did a no start last week for the first time. Just cranks and cranks then times out. Shut it off, and tried again and it started fine. No issues since.

When I saw the 3.1-hour number for the lift-cab replacement job it reminded me of a story I heard. Apparently, Mazda had a warranty issue on something and they would only pay the dealership a heavily discounted rate like 3 hours for a 9-hour job. So the mechanics hated these jobs and when this happens quality suffers and things don't get done right. The one thing I would worry about after having the cab lifted was that there are just too many things that could be missed/lost/improperly restored. So you end up with a lesser built vehicle than what you bought.

Well as a mechanic, I think a cab off job is better quality than the extensive engine job with the cab on as there is more room to work and easier to see to double check your work before setting the cab down and buttoning everything up.But you’re right too low of labor hours, paid doesn’t bode well for quality of the work performed.

Not to put anymore fear in owners minds, but jobs like this can easily introduce future problems depending on the quality and how conscientious the mechanic doing the work is. I personally wouldn't want someone working flatrate doing it on my vehicle. It's way too easy to pinch a wire during reassembly that wouldn't become problematic for months/years.

One of the forums i read mentioned the starter problem may seem random because that piece’s initial position is the cause. So if it starts cranking when it’s in the “wrong” position, then it doesn’t fire up (sorry I’m tired and can’t find the right words, haha). It would make sense then that the upgrade some mention in these comments that appears to delay the start by 1/2 second is done to reposition that piece so that the engine will start more reliably. What gives me hope is that it sounds like MOST of these issues happen then the engine starts the next time. The scarier issues are when the engine just quits or doesn’t start at all but that doesn’t appear to be the case with THIS issue.

I own a 2021 Silverado LTZ, Z71. This issue has happened 3 times. I thought that maybe I was releasing the brake at the same time as pressing the start button. It has always started on the next press to start. Also I thought maybe I'm not allowing the truck to wake up sort of speak, so I wait a few seconds to start the truck after entering the truck. I purchased this truck and the diesel to tow a 7000# camper. I also drive it every day. Pulling the camper with this truck package is awesome. We pulled it with a 2003 Tahoe before and the power difference is awesome. The longer wheel base makes is much more comfortable. Now my daily commute (23 miles) is through small towns, stop and go, red lights not many areas for cruising. And I average 25 - 29 per commute. This also depends if the A/C is running and regens. A regen is a cycle that cleans the Particulate Filter. I've noticed a regen occurring around every 300 miles. Over a tank for these trips I'm around 26 -27 mpg. With 12,800 miles on the truck and towing at times in that mileage I've averaged 22.3. This is the second trip odometer calculating this mileage. I bought my truck knowing some of the issues that have been documented since 2019. There is risk with anything in life but I can say this is an awesome truck. I have a friend that is 6'6" and he has lots of room in the back seat. Crew cab not a double. The gripe I have is the Regen Cycle. The driver needs to know when this is about to occur. Or give the driver an option to skip at least once. I've gone on short errands and it has started a regen. The next trip it will continue that regen. I don't keep driving till it ends. Some folks say it's best to do this but I don't. Another gripe is not knowing what gear the truck is in. It would be nice to have a visual of what gear the truck is in when pulling a heavy load. I talked with 3 other owners at the last campground we were at and they have had no issues. One gent said this engine is GM's best kept secret.

My 2019 v8 5.3 trailboss has done a crank/no start once. It was -28c and when I tried my remote starter it didn’t start the truck. I got outside put the key in and cranked it, but no start. After 3-5 seconds I stopped cranking but the truck kept turning over. I had to open the door to get it to stop. After a minute I tried again and it started right up but It threw a code, something about low voltage between circuits 1 and 2. I called the dealer and the next day I went out and the code cleared its self. Now the truck is almost out of warranty so I’m hoping it doesn’t do it again. I figured maybe a low battery because it was so cold and the truck sat for a few weeks.

This may be oversimplified but, if its happening to both gas and diesel motors what is common to them both? Is it a physical part or program or algorithm in the ECU. Once commonalities are identified, it should be a process of elimination.

In despite of 100 years history of engine technology, new modern engine still break down, , it happens all the time with all engine manufacturers globally., some have less troubles than others, anyhow, anything mechanical, electrical, they all wear out, break down, common sense. but in this case, obviously that you can see the cam phase bracket wheel is too thin, unable to sustain the heavy cranking impacts in a long run, that's the reason to cause it warp, it needs to be more robust, bigger size at least thicker metal to build the bracket wheel to be stronger.

It's a problem that all manufacturers will continue to have until they realize that sending products out to be built by someone else is a short term gain but long term downfall. Vertical integration allows you to oversee quality, availability, and integrity of your product. Although the cost upfront may be higher, the damage to the brand is unrepairable It used to be that 80 percent was produced in house and 20 percent was outsourced, now it's the other way around.

Ha happened to me 4 times in 4200 miles, biggest thing is a bit embarrassing when everyone hears it spinning over so fast with no attempt to start. Then after it times out, or if you drop it in drive while it's cranking it stops and refires instantly with no roughness or hesitation. I find it hard to believe it's a bent part as it would happen almost every time then? It's very intermittent and I would not hesitate to buy another even if they never get it fixed, as long as it happens as infrequently as it does. Mine has a build date of 5/21

I agree as long as it doesn’t start happening more frequently. I’ve had mine since mid April and have about 5500 miles on it. It has happened three times now. And every time it happens it fires right up on the next try. There is no way in hell I’m taking it to the local dealership where they can barely perform an oil change and tire rotation right and have them tear the cab off to change a part out in the back of the motor THAT MIGHT NOT EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM. I can only imagine how much more shit would be messed up during that complicated of a job. Ironically, the first time it happened on mine was immediately after I was checking the round 7 pin plug in the back of the truck that my boat trailer plugs into. I accidentally touched the circuit tester to some metal while it was touching one of the pins and it created a small spark and ended up frying a turn signal fuse. I hopped in the truck to start it and it cranked for 15 seconds and wouldn’t start. Then fired up on the next try a couple minutes after I got out and checked things over in the motor/fuse/battery area. The next two times have been totally random but it still fires up on second attempt. At this point I’m just layin in the weeds and I want to throw a huge thank you out there to all of those guys that are offering their trucks up and are being the guinea pigs. It sucks that you might have to be without your truck for a month but somehow, some way they need to get to the bottom of this. I Hope it’s an easier fix than the cab off method that’s for sure…

Bought a new 2020 3.0 diesel off the lot was great the first 30k miles until blowing up due to a bad weld on a bolt sending it through the engine block. Always been maintained by a GM dealer and maintenance completed before exceeding or going over mileage, fuel filter life, etc. Purchased an extended warranty as well with it being a first year engine, I had to fly home after the engine going in the middle of nowhere without a rental provided by GM (which they promise to provide in this situation) been back and forth with GM directly as well as the dealership (finger pointing between the two) who replaced the motor. When I flew back to get the truck it ran hot at 240 degrees drinking six gallons of coolant shutting off A/C the entire trip and has only been a nightmare with GM ever since. When its all said and done I've had many GM's however after this experience I will be going to the dark side and purchasing a Ford.
