About charging a rest times: By AC charging standard, max current is 63A or about 43kW. If the truck can draw 43kW with onboard AC charger, you would need only 63A socket to charge overnight. About your uphill driving. I'm not sure you're entirely correct, it sure depends on the car/engine/truck. But in general, ICE engine works with best efficiency when at full power - that does not mean max rpm. You can still be in the optimal RPM range, and use the full power at those RPM and in that regard use the ICE engine with best possible efficiency, that is especially true for the diesel engines. With the electric motors, the efficiency does not change much with RPM, that's true. But driving uphill much faster, means running the the electric motor at higher power, higher amps, which in term means more thermal stress for the motor, cables and battery, introducing some additional heat losses for higher power used for heigher speeds uphil. So to sum up... as you were explaning, the ICE engine would be more efficient uphill at full power, at the same time, electric motor would be less efficient at heigher power.
@simsnqtaАй бұрын
Efficiency of electric motors changes with RPM. You can't override physic laws.
@simsnqtaАй бұрын
Electric motor efficiency and RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) are closely related, but not directly interchangeable. Efficiency in electric motors refers to how effectively the motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. This efficiency depends on several factors, including the design of the motor, load conditions, and the operating RPM. ### Key Points on Electric Motor Efficiency and RPM: 1. **Motor Efficiency Curve**: - Most electric motors have an efficiency curve that shows how efficiently they operate at different loads and speeds (RPM). Efficiency is usually highest at a certain range of RPM, typically around the motor's rated speed. - If the motor is operating at too low or too high a speed compared to its rated RPM, efficiency can drop due to factors like increased losses in the windings and the core or excessive mechanical friction. 2. **Load vs. RPM**: - **Full Load**: At or near full load, motors typically operate at their highest efficiency. If the load is reduced, efficiency may decrease. - **Low RPM**: When the motor runs at lower RPM, the losses in the motor (such as copper losses and core losses) can become more significant, reducing overall efficiency. - **High RPM**: Operating at higher RPM can lead to increased mechanical losses, like friction and windage losses, which also negatively impact efficiency. 3. **Efficiency vs. Power Output**: - As RPM increases, the power output of the motor also increases, but at a certain point, the motor's ability to maintain efficiency diminishes due to increased losses. - The motor’s design (e.g., permanent magnet, induction, or synchronous) will affect how it handles varying RPMs, with some types being more efficient at different speed ranges. ### Summary: Electric motor efficiency varies with RPM and is typically optimized at a certain operating speed. Too low or too high RPM can reduce efficiency due to higher losses. Therefore, it's important to match the motor's RPM to its designed operating range for maximum efficiency.
@anzew88Ай бұрын
@@simsnqta all you wrote is completly true, but also completly out of context for this particular case. If this truck electric motor drives the whole 40t of a vehicle uphill at 60km/h or 90km/h... it both cases it will still be well within normal AND most efficient operating RPM range, thus, the efficiency of the electric motor itself at either 60km/h or 90km/h won't really be the major factor in overall consumption. Everything else, from drag, mechanical friction and most of all increased currents in the installation AND battery will be the much more important contributors to higher consumpton than the electric motor itself. So, despite a much smaller increase of consumpton (compared to diesel truck), driving uphill at 90km/h will still be less efficient than driving uphill at 60km/h, with the electric truck. Getting the best efficiency out of diesel truck is a different recipe, keeping it at best RPM and at full load, usuall means best efficiency, where the charge pressures and fuel burn is at its best. My point was... Driving the diesel engine at 20% load is way less efficient tha driving electric motor at 20% load. Electric motors efficiency doesn't vairy as much as the diesel engine efficency depending on the load.

How viable would it be to have specialised trailers for these electric tractor units, that have a solar panel on the roof? Surely a panel that size (20m2+) could generate enough to extend journeys?? (Albeit during the day only)
@celeron55Ай бұрын
As you can see, the truck's battery is about 600kWh and it lasts less than a day. The trailer roof is maybe 30 square meters. 1 square meter of solar panel, when positioned carefully, will produce over 1000 kWh yearly. So let's say 500 kWh yearly maximum in this use case. That multiplied by 30 gives 15 MWh. That would cover about 5% of consumption. So - not a lot. You still need to charge 95% of what you did without the solar panels.

Since brake pads and discs need to be 100% efficient at 100% of the time so that they can provide 100% of stopping power in an event of emergency, not using friction brakes at all and always relying on regen braking could be considered a safety issue, as the pads/discs don't get cleaned as often or at all. You're having to deal with an ever increasing amount of Amazon drivers hogging the charging stations, sapping even more of the time being lost vs a quick refuel. Even if the cost was on a par, the time taken to recharge, the risk of chargers being out of use or incompatible, and the seemingly random charging rates are all major issues that absolutely must be overcome.

Very strange seing the comments, seems that people only like positive and non confronting coments or common sensed, this is only viable let me put this ( AT THE MOMENT) is not viable or even cost effective if you have to stop at least once a day to drop your trailer, charge, couple in then drive again, its actually ridiculous to think that people are ok with that and like you also said ( In this Industry time is money) so now I ask you, can you calculate how much time you waste a day from the moment you stop, drop the trailer, go and charge and hopefully you find a charger that actually charges, couple up then move on, I guarantee you that minimum 1 hour wasted every day, and for some that say that you have to take 45min break anyway, well most time you can do that anywhere and also you can do it while you're on a bay loading or unloading as long you're not doing it wich most European countries that's how it is these days, so this is mental how so many agree that this is the future) Also let me tell you, what the other trucker said about you moving quick and then press the rest button, let me tell you that by law is illegal and the new tachos do register the movement and can also be downloaded let's say if the police or any other legal agency is behind your truck it can actually download thr information and for that you'll get a fine, but hey you do it, most do, I done it until recently that I found out about it so just be careful with that. This is a very good idea if there's incentives and the driver does a route of day where he uses let's say 70/80% battery and that comes back to the depo/warehouse to charge every day/night, but for 90% of the industry is ridiculous trying to say this is brilliant, ask any big trucking business owner and he will tell you that, most run flat out, driving 9hours/600 or more km a day, other swap drivers like my place so the truck can be working 20plus hours straight, still only fuel up every 4 to 5 days and it takes 10 to 20 minutes depending the pump, so no this makes no sense unless it's the main depo deliveries that you don't need to waste your work tome planing a route that involves 2 charging points, that makes no sense as most of us already have the day full to worry about let alone dropping the trailer 2 times a day to charge. This is my view, 10 years in the industry.

Then it is a bug in the tacho and it should be fixed. Either way laws need to change.

But trucks are impossible to electrify, it s vapor ware, it s never going to happen, it s against phisics. P.S. Do your research, invest in Tesla.

While I do appreciate environmental benefits of electic vehicles, what you show us in your videos clearly demonstrates charging infrastructure just isn't there yet and we are all better off sticking with traditional engines. Thank you for taking the time to share this insight. I was seriously considering replacing my 13 year old gasoline car, but your vidoes (and German government removing electric car subsidies) convinced me electic cars simply don't make sense yet. In my current gas Honda I simply never have to plan anything. When tank gets to 1/4 or 1/8 I pull up to the next gas station and move on 4 minutes later. With electic charges being so few and far between (and taking long time to boot) it makes no sense for me to make the switch. Not to mention the cost of a new EV. I would take the jump if cost of entry were lower (since I do have a garage and so can easily charge at home - at least for day to day driving). But up front cost just absolutely destroys the rationale of making the switch and other inconveniences only make the whole proposition that much more undesirable.

This is where the Hybrids are good... the jump to full EV is quite a miss.

EV just got much cheaper. The priced for batteries dropped 50% in 2024. And these professionals can calculate. It is not about the price for the truck alone, the overall costs are much cheaper in the end and so they can offer cheaper transportation which will make a difference in the market. Don't compare your privat experience with professional calculations where every cent counts. Holcim just bought 1000 eActros from Mercedes. The company of the Electrotrucker ordered more than 20 eTrucks. Btw: The European truck manufacturers just got together to build charging stations for trucks all over Europe. For cars you find a charging station anyway. 2024 alone more than 30.000 Charging points where build. I don't see a problem with convenience. Modern EVs can drive 400-700km anyway - if they are not build for the city.

That makes no sense. Charging is the easier problem to solve by far. Do your research, invest in Tesla.

As a former EV owner - you're now in the learning curve. At some point you'll figure out all this lost time for guessing where to charge and wait is not worth it and will go to diesel. I bought my first diesel after owning my first EV for 4 years. Good luck.

He develops his own App for charging points. These guys are professionals. They now where they can charge and we get more and more charging points everywhere. In the future you can also charge when loading/unloading as well.
