I am glad you liked the video. Did you get an answer to your question yet? I could give you the answer but step by step will be tough in a comment box. You need to match the first terms as you work through the division process...the first term of your answer is 2x. If you still can't get it you can send me a message through my Facebook page.

Professor RobBob ,thank you for a well explained video/lecture on Long Division of Polynomials. This topic is fairly simple to follow with some basic guidelines. In example one, there is an error, you have 10x, instead of 10x squared in the long division process.

Yep I like the way you explain things that seem to have nothing to do with the question in hand (ie that 8/2=4 with a remainder of 0. Zero because 2 is a factor of 8). These extra explainations ensures the teacher not only explains the answer but helps you to understand why you got the given answer, and that that is what math and learning is about. I am a teacher (15 years expereince) and have just started learning math and physics at university because I want to change my direction in teaching and I have always liked maths and have always found it a challenge. People like you who spend the time to publish these videos really are good people. Thanks a lot, really. Mike

This was an excellent video, and especially suitable in video format for this type of math technique. I once had done a long division of a polynomial because I originally had a limit of a rational function. I wanted to see whether or not I could get cancellable rational expression so that I could get rid of the denominator, and find the limit by plugging in method. My polynomial long division was really messy because I did not have those 0*y^4 style terms in my style!!!

long time watcher, big fan as usual. I know it's an old vid but I noticed on the last example, the origonal problem was y^5 - 3y^2 +20 / y - 2. I noticed when you rewrote the equation, the +20 became a -20. I did it both ways but the -20 got to your same answer so I think I got it.

One thing I’m not seeing mentioned in this video. You also have to set the denominator to zero so you know what the variable can NOT be under any circumstances in the long division problem. (Ex: In the 2nd problem where you divided into “y-2” y can never be equal to 2 because that would result in a denominator of 0, which is impossible to divide.

Thank you for making all of your videos to help students such as myself. I am a computer science major and I am trying to create a program that performs polynomial long division, however I was wondering if I should let pi and Euler's constant be a part of coefficients? After searching for definitions of polynomial division, I have an understanding of what a polynomial is, but not what a polynomial can have in it as well as allowing inputs of polynomials that have more than one variable. Also, I was wondering about imaginary numbers. I would like to make my program as symbolic as possible. Thank you again, very much for all of your help and dedication on making math easier to grasp.

I have watch all your video and have understand algebra 2 alot better but thus one question ran into I watch your videos to find it but you don't have one it's over long division. (6x^4-3x^3-11x^2+2x+4)÷(3x-1) I work out the first step I got 6x^4-3x^3 -(6x^4-2x^2)

Hi Prof RobBob I don't get it why polynomial long division is an extension of the integer long division, can you explain how to compute a long division of an integer written in polynomial form?
