Great video Emma! Thank you…if I may, I have a couple of extra points just in case anyone would like them . (Ive been a flight attendant for over 30 years trans atlantic and trans pacific routes plus lots of personal travel long haul) The lithium batteries go in your hand luggage in the US and most countries I’m familiar with and there is a size limit. Since they are the cause of fires and malfunctions, the procedures have become more strict, so check with the airline you’re traveling on for limitations. It’s very useful to carry a pair of those very flat, thin slippers you get in hotels to slip on in case you need to use the lavs. They don’t take up much room and you can stay comfy with your shoes put away for the flight. A mask is always handy just in case, disinfecting wipes are better than gels since they add to your max liquid allowance of about one liter which is why the silly sandwich bags. If all your liquids fit into that little bag, you are good. These wipes are also great for wiping down your tray table, arm rests or touchscreen. The filthiest part of your surrounding area is the seat back pocket (all sorts of things go there so I will spare the details). It’s a great idea to not use that at all even for a magazine or book for later. Comfy clothes that aren’t too light colored (think spills or mishaps) and breathable are a must. I’d add that clothing that isn’t revealing is a big plus so if you reach for something in the overhead, you’re not revealing more than planned and now some dude nearby is going to give you the creepy vibe for the next 10+ hrs (I’ve seen everything). Keep anything important or valuable in your carry on bags and a luggage tag that isn’t too fancy or expensive is a great idea. Most luggage tags don’t last long and get ripped off, so best to not be too attached to one. The AirTags are a wonderful idea and I use them, BUT they do not update location to the minute or sometimes even an hour so, if your AirTag says your luggage is ‘left behind’ and you’re taking off, then it doesn’t update since there’s no signal, don’t despair for the next 10+hrs.it simply didn’t update. It’s kind of scary if it shows your iPad is still in your hotel and now you’re airborn or your luggage is still at the airport. Having your own snacks/food and drink is a great idea so you dont rely on the airline in case you have dietary needs. A bag or two of your favorite tea is really nice and getting a hot cup of water is never a problem. Do stay clear of any sleep meds especially ones you haven’t had a lot of experience with (too many times passengers take them and wake up wondering why theyre in handcuffs). So give any of those meds a proper at home trial before proceeding to using them in flight. If you use your credit or debit card overseas, be aware if your bank charges you foreign transaction fees. You can cut down on unnecessary charges by using an ATM (preferably a well known bank one that is not directly on the street) and not opting for your currency when asked on credit card charges. The additional fee for them exchanging to your currency is always a loss for you. Definitely agree on being aware of any phone charges and using wifi instead or inquiring with your provider beforehand. I use Skype or WhatsApp for voice calls since my plan includes data in other countries for a small fee, but every service provider varies. Again, fantastic video and so helpful, I enjoy all of your content so keep up the great work 😊

I am an American expat in Stockholm and we long-haul fly A LOT! I always travel with an “Airfly”…it’s a bluetooth transmitter that allows you to wirelessly use your good headphones or AirPods with a device that has an auxiliary port. You can also get a duo where you and your flying companion can watch something together. It’s a fantastic little device! Love your videos! Enjoy your trip and safe travels!

We've travelled a lot over the past couple of years - Europe, US, Canada - and never had an empty water bottle confiscated. We always have it in our carry on with the top off so it's clearly empty. There's no restriction on any water bottle size you can buy once you're through security - and then take on the plane - so there's no need for them to take an empty receptacle off you. Then we fill it at the free water fountain in the airport and take it on the plane with us - no unnecessary plastic bottle purchased!

I've got anxiety and OCD and fly to Orlando for business a lot. A few tips: Noise-canceling headphones, single packets of disinfecting wipes, and a top, sweater, or scarf that's soothing to touch. Swap your rollerbag carry-on for a duffel or backpack, if possible; there is never space. I find Orlando particularly hard because there are many little ones and big family groups -- no shade to those travelers, just a LOT for someone with OCD!

I also don’t travel in lace up shoes. I usually wear Birkenstock Boston clogs. Easy to take off going through security, and I can take them off on the plane. Even if I keep them on, they are loose and my feet feel free to breath and free of swelling at altitude.

I travelled from Scandinavia to LA over Christmas and new years and I have comments and additions to all points of this video basically 😂 But main point that caused me issues is airport security and liquid allowance. I had exactly the same plastic pouch as Emma for liquids that I have used many times before without any issues. This time I was forced to move my stuff over to the little “sandwich bag” which meant I had to throw away things that wouldn’t fit! So just to be safe, make sure whatever you pack in there will also fit in the airport bags. Worst start to a trip ever 😢 When I got over this fiasco I had a looovely holiday 😎 Recommend Wise bank card for traveling. It has all the features the Emma talked about with her option as well, and it saved me so much on not having to pay the added fee on the exchange rate for every purchase in USD! 👏 Have a great trip Emma!

I was going to make the same comment. There are several airports where they do that, as you are not supposed to exceed one litre in total. So even if you have a TSA-approved clear case/pouch (like I do) and nothing is over 100 ml, they can still tell you to transfer everything to that flimsy bag and remove what doesn’t fit - which actually means that you can have less than a litre, but whatever. To be on the safe side, I check that everything fits into the stupid sandwich bag and have it inside my nice travel case, just to be prepared. It drives me mental.

I used to travel transatlantic once a month for work. I usually changed into sweatpants (cashmere ones from H&M, looooove them and not too precious) on the plane or just before boarding. And I never wore light colours as I 100% would spill. Always had a nice big cashmere scarf accessible too.

Me again. Best long haul flight we ever took, from Vancouver to Sydney Australia. Killer flight. But Quantas gave out a trip planner when we took off which laid out the whole flight, when first snack would be offered, when dinner was served, when we should try to sleep, and when breakfast would be served. This really appealed to two teachers. 😀 And now I do this if we’re flying for over six hours. My husband says I’m planning the lesson. 😀 But it’s great for breaking up the long hours of a long flight into bite-sized pieces.

Hi Emma, thank you for this thorough video! I truly appreciated your angle of "take the maximum amount of suitcases" since I feel like everyone these days is all about minimal packing, carry-on only, etc. I really don't get how they make it work for anything longer than just a few days. Those of us that like to be extra prepared and have our nice things are judged harshly 😂

To give it a more dressed up vibes without loosing even a tiny bit of comfort ●Having a dark navy , dark brown .. having 1 sweatpants in a design that mimiques the balloon jeans •just above ankle •elasticated seem at ankle Or a wide leg sweatpants but with a rubberband you diy it at the back of the joggers (by making a "ponytail" that you then flip to the inside (inspired by/from TIBI sweatpants) ● a flat shoe instead of sneakers maybe like a loafer or a derbies ( example/inspiration from G.H.BaSS the Weejuns Mary Janes Black Pull Up ) in a dark brown or black with socks that have a bit of a slouchy vibe ●& instead of the matching hoodie or jumper go for a light merinowool one in a dark navy Those are 3 different options without loosing the element of comfort what so ever. You can do all 3 in 1 look or 1 of the 3 ✌🏻❄️

For our last long haul trip from Canada to Portugal, we purchased, on recommendation from a friend, a portable charger. Then we charge it, and I can charge my phone, iPad, and my husband’s iPad before it needs to be charged. This helped because we were delayed over three hours enroute, and could read and listen without having to find an outlet. Plus some of the accommodation we stayed in over the months we were away had fewer accessible plugs to charge, and one of our converter plugs kept falling out of the outlet. This really simplified things. Oops. Added this before I saw you already mentioned it.

Good info. Thanks. I’m traveling from US to Ireland this year. I’ll probably use my regular credit card as I have done in the past and haven’t had too much trouble with fees but will check before I go. Also, I heard another travel KZbinr suggest to get cash at your destination and not too much, in case it gets stolen. Also, don’t go to a street ATM as they have higher fees, but go to a bank. Good information about travel clothes. Comfort is King, or Queen in my case. Lately the last few flights I was on I was warm, so definitely layers.

Comfy jeans can be just as good for a long flight but then they wont be looking very good as they need to be so comfy. Then I don’t ever wear a hoody or something that needs to be taken off over you head. The hoody gets uncomfotable and to be more flexible I will make sure that the sweater has a zipper all the way if I do need to take it off. But jeans YES! The right kind no problem!

I don’t do any long haul traveling ( road trip or plane) in a hoodie. The hood itself bugs the heck out of me! It makes me hot, it’s too bulky with seat belts, and gets in the way of a travel pillow, and I don’t like it up against headrests. I do like comfortable clothing in layers, that are easy to take on and off.

Emma I can highly recommend getting a Currensea card - it's linked to your own bank account, so no need to open a new bank account. It can be used all over the world - I used it in the US and Canada last year - and you can withdraw cash free of charge with it, as well as using it as a debit card. Even better, it always gives you the best exchange rate at the time of purchase and at the end of your holiday will tell you how much you've saved - so in New York for 4 days in December I saved just over £50! Friends and family have got one on my recommndation and all found it great. :)
