Very cool hive Kelly. Glad you are promoting horizontal hives! I used to have a top bar hive but like the plans of your horizontal hive much better. 💖💖

Where can I find plans to constrct such a hive ? Looks very interesting ..

In the video, I mention going to HorizontalHives.com I used their base plans, then made the modifications I wanted that you see in the video. The base plans will get you pretty far along, then just make the changes you want. Hope that helps!

"And that way the small hive beetles that live in hives; will fall through the grate, of the bottom, the screen... and into the oil... (sinister voice) and Die." This woman went though all this trouble just to end some beetles. We know her real goals now. 😱😱

It’s true…you found me out! 🤣 My real reason for beekeeping is my personal war against small hive beetles! (shakes fist in the air) Darn you small hive beetles!

Do you happen to have any details on the actual building of the horizontal hive? Thanks much.

In the video, I mention HorizontalHives.com If you go there, they have free plans. I used the body plan, a modified version of the gable roof, and the screen bottom board plan. Thanks for commenting! Hope that helped!

did you have to make a queen excluder frame or how do you put in an excluder?
@LuckyCrownHoney5 ай бұрын
Hey @jhippl , thanks for asking! So they make queen excluders that can just slide in between the frames, and sit there. They can also be cut down to fit the hive measurements. But if I were to do it, I would likely modify my follower board with a cut out in it, and place a cut out piece of the queen excluder in that hole. It wouldn’t be too hard to do, I think. However, with this particular hive, you’re not supposed to NEED a queen excluder. The way I understood it was they would naturally lay their brood near the entrance, and it would slowly phase out to honey frames farther from the door. This is a learning journey with these hives for me, and so far, I have not found this to be true. I have 20 frames currently in this hive, 4 undrawn, maybe 2 with just resources (nectar/honey/pollen), and all the rest is brood frames. So that’s about 14 frames of brood, from the door all the way to the end. 😅 I have a very productive queen. It doesn’t look like I’ll get much honey this year. Being that I’m a new beekeeper, and I’m also new to these hives, I’m giving myself at least 2 years (seasons) to learn them first before adding a queen excluder

@@LuckyCrownHoney thanks for the great reply, i am new this year and im starting with an 8 frame hive but i am interested in the bar top as it looks like it would be easier to manage.

@@jhippl That’s why I chose a horizontal hive as well. My back would not be happy with me hauling boxes around full of honey. Keep in mind that a top bar hive is different then a long Langstroth hive. They’re both horizontal though. ☺️
