I was born in Providence Hospital Washington DC while my mother was at St Ann’s Infant and Maternity Home in Washington DC. I was born in 1952. Searched for decades. Found birth mother this year. She passed in 1991. No idea who father was. She never revealed him. It was not as exciting as I believed. Made me love my adoptive parents even more. The sacrifices are remarkable. My adoptive parents were real parents. Up at night, to school to meet teachers, to dances to create and help. Ultimately when I was divorced they stood with me to protect my kids. They did not die until they were sure I could stand on my own. What a remarkable love story.

You have been very lucky. I would think that anyone who wants a child enough to adopt a baby would be the best parent that he or she could be the best parent possible. I’m glad you came away feeling grateful to your (adoptive)parents. They were in every way your loving parents. Some differences in blood DNA are meaningless.

Why did they leave their babies? They were poor and had no money and no family to support them. They left them hoping that they would be found and have a better life . These adults take this act as a personal insult. Money, they had no money. Many adoptees really believe that if they knew their bio parents, then all their problems would be solved. It was for financial reasons. Economics!

My great grandfather was left at the doorstep of a couple who were childless. I adored him and my great grandmother, they were wonderful, kind, and loving people. A few years ago a visitorr in my home noticed their photo and when I explained who they were, he looked puzzled and said, "but he's black! I was stunned. I've walked by that photo countless times, I've held it in my hands and close to my heart. In all that time (and in all my memories of him) I never saw that he was black. All I ever saw was the color of love. We know nothing of his origin. He was born in the late 1800's in (European) Portugal, in an area that was all white. Was he abandoned because of his skin color? We don't know and it doesn't matter. I was a little girl when he passed and I still miss that sweet, gentle man. He will always be in my heart. ❤😥❤

I heard "his wife was not your mother 23:06 so Karen was the result of an affair and Karen's father didn't know about her because he was not told. Maybe not an affair, just a one night stand. Just guessing.

I do think it must be painful to Karen as being the only one given away. But trying to get into what her mother was thinking is impossible. She was overwhelmed. Clearly sexually active, and I’m not criticizing her. I guess birth control wasn’t available then. Women continue to get pregnant when they aren’t married. It’s such a more secure situation when there is a husband around. Even if it doesn’t last. It’s always the women who have to figure things out because the consequences are ours, good or bad. I must say that seeing these programs makes me very grateful that I grew up in a complete family. If I had been adopted, I’m not sure I would want to know. People do say that they feel different if they have siblings who look alike, but not like you do. Complicated.

It’s hard to understand and live with. I was adopted about 24 hrs after I was born. The woman who gave birth to me had 12 Children before me, and gave All of them up for adoption. I was baby #13…and she was only 38 when I was born.

My heart bleeds for all of them. I came from loving parents who had 8 children and were together for almost 60 years befor my dad passed. It is hard to imagine what kind of pain these people go through ,the not knowing their parents or siblings . I pray that each one of them may find out who their parents are and any blood kin they may have. I also had a baby at 16 but thank God I had a family that when I told my father at 7 months pregnant ,he asked what I wanted to do? He and my mom would support me no matter what. I said I wanted to keep her and his reply was Thank God as I couldn't handle having a grandchild in this world and not knowing them or where they were. I didn't realize how lucky I was then. My siblings don't always get along with each other after my parents passed. This show has made me realize that we need to be thankful for each other and having each other. I pray each one of these people will find their family and that they will welcome them with open arms.

I woke up early this morning to the sound of this with my earphone on my left ear. I'd fallen asleep watching something tidal different themed. Last night I'd learned that my great niece and nephew were placed into Children Protective Service AGAIN. Last time we took them in while the parent went to rehab and counseling but sadly parents fell back into drugs. My husband and I both married men in our late 50s and early 60s took our great niece and nephew in but we aren't at an age to keep raising children. It breaks are heart for those babies there only 2 and 3 years of age. This is a sign that it should be the children should be cared for by another family. Tristan and Kailani we love you and hope we're still alive to see you another time in our lives. ❤️

I love how calmly and slowly all information is given. The brain has the opportunity to absorb and internalize the information first. If you were to tell everything much faster, the people concerned would probably not be able to oversee everything. I love this show!

I understand this . My dad was adopted by his grandmother and his mum disappeared . It really had an affect on my dad it was so sad as his grandmother died when he was 14 and he had no one and had lived in abject poverty his whole life . For years I resented my grandmother after my dad passed away and none of his family was at his funeral (they had all but disappeared ) I decided to search for his mum and dad . Turned out his mum had died in 1980 and his dad had also passed . It turned out that his dad was in a Japanese POW camp in 1942-44 and his mum thought he had died in the war . In those days a single mother was seen as a sin even though he was fighting for his country .... the shame was too much for her and she gave up my dad . So sad what happened in those days .

This episode reminds me of what happens all over. There are cases similar to what happens in the U.S. if they don't want the child, they do have a choice to take the child to the hospital or local police station. Siblings found each other when both were abandoned. No child should suffer this way, neglect is traumatic 😢

I think DNA is the most amazing thing that has come into our generation to help solve so many things like these mysteries for these children that deserve to know the truth and solve crimes. Thank you DNA ❤️ as I always say…. The truth always comes out. My husband was adopted and we found the mother unfortunately she did not want any contact (so we respect that) I believe that is bc she had another child even though she never married. I hope one day in the future my husband has an opportunity to meet his brother that 4 years younger than him (almost exactly to the day)…. We at least have contact with his birth moms brother (only) but his birth mom does not know.

I know it is painful not knowing your parents and other family members; but that is better than being raised by parents that don't want you! That is what happened to me. Age 4 -6 I prayed daily that God would tell them to put me up for adoption, even if it meant not getting adopted and living in one of those horrible group homes I had seen on tv movies. They were married, and knew their families would shame them for giving away their baby. Having health issues that no one understood made things even worse.I was treated worse than the other kids. I am over 50 and still don't fit in with my birth family. I would have preferred being left somewhere for someone to find me. Seems we all have a difficult life in one way or another. Only children want siblings, children with siblings want to be an only child......

Same here. And once the parents passed, the rest of the family totally abandoned me despite my effort and sacrifice to be part of them. We were just terribly mismatched. It’s just how Khalil Gibran describes it that children are God’s gift to their parents. Some parents are not deserving of that gift. I have no other explanation.

Her birth mom gave her up because she wanted a better life for her, raising a 4 year old alone already. After she gave her up, it broke her heart 💔 and she couldn’t imagine growing through that pain again. She chose to work harder to keep her next baby. Her guilt is so heartfelt through this story. She loved you ALL. I honestly believe that she thought it was best for her and to have a different life. It obviously was something she never got over. Glad they have each other now.

In Karen's case her dad was already a father and never had any intentions of being there for her mother, except in bed. and note how her sister is talking to Nicky about their mother and says "I've seen pictures of her." So mom was not there for the kids either. Sad all the way around.

My son's wife was a foundling and adopted by a loving couple. Recently through DNA she found two half siblings, and that she is Colombian. Her mother won't meet because of her own mother, a strict Catholic, whom she feels would condemn her for being pregnant out of wedlock. But my daughter-in-law is satisfied to have found a sister and brother. My own son was adopted and learned who his family is too but is afraid his mother may not want to know him. Maybe in time he will reach out, but he's 43 and time is passing. These are hard choices.

Perhaps he can get someone to see his mother on his behalf. I think that this is a very wise step, just in case she doesn't want to meet him. It would be as if he had been rejected twice. Then that person could tactfully approach his mum and find out if she wants to see him. Even if she doesn't, she might be prepared to give the person that visits her, some if the information that the man wants, even if it's just a photo. It must be heartbreaking to go through this, both for the mum and for her son. Hoping that they are able to reconnect. He could perhaps send a letter with the go-between person and explain that he has forgoven her and lerhaps she will feel moved to see him, especially if he sends a photo with the letter. 😢

If a woman gave up a child for adoption, especially for the sake of the child, what does the child, even as an adult, have to forgive. She gave the child life twice. She didn’t abort the baby, she didn’t kill the baby after birth. I think women who give up children for adoption are the bravest, strongest women in the world. It’s an unbelievable sacrifice. Hi. It seems all of these foundlings were way better off in their adoptive homes. The mothers were dirt poor or couldnt be bothered. These days there are places to leave a baby, no questions asked. Of course with DNA and cameras everywhere it would be far easier to be found out.straight away.

If the father's had been told. I know of a friend who didn't tell the father because she had been told that she was breaking up a family by having the affair with the man. So kept quiet about her pregnancy. She found out much later that it was a lie made up by the man's ex wife. Probably trying to mess with his life.

Thank you for the great episodes! It's been amazing to watch their journeys. The past can't be reversed, but some answers go a long way to give closure and healing. It is surprising that no one searched out the occupant of flat #23 where the second woman was left on the door mat. Why would she carry a newborn baby through the night, up a flight of steps and drop her on the threshold of the door unless there was a connection?

During some hard times in America there was such a thing as the Orphan Train and many parents who could not afford another child gave up children that were already half grown. I think you will find that story interesting. The orphans we're not really orphans and there were many farmers out west and in the Midwest who could not have children. They considered it a great honor to take on a grown child. I hope everyone is able to find some peace because there's a great deal of pressure on the mother as if the father has no blame to face

I love how the siblings embrace their "new" siblings and want to meet them and be in their lives. my own sister resented me since the day i was born and has recently cut ties with me. i always wanted us to have a sisterly relationship but she never did. and now she is "free." :*{

I have the exact situation, only I did the tie cutting. I’m almost 60 and I cannot keep hoping that she wants any kind of relationship with me. Once our parents were gone, she literally saw no need to see me. Our neighbours were stunned to discover we were related, we lived less than a block away from each other. I actually found it quite freeing. I know longer had to do all the work in what relationship we had, which I always did for my Mama and Pops

I have watched shows where the biological mother abandoned at least 5 children. Never used birth control. ..but she gave them life, and that's a gift in itself. So sad to learn the truth sometimes.

I’m shocked that no one in the comments gets angry about these drop offs. These babies are exposed to physical danger, as well the potential for experiencing criminal abuse including child molestation or being abused physically or psychologically if they are picked up by the wrong person. The very act of leaving a newborn improperly held without support can damage their spine. There should be something like a “public health warning” somewhere in the opening moments of the show.

Thank God we have drop off places that desperate women can leave their babies safely without prosecution. Try not to be so judgmental- these women were kids themselves with judgmental parents and zero help. Desperate people do desperate things. None were molested or sexually abused. Guardian Angels protected them ! 😇

Safe havens were not available some years back and maybe these women were alone and scared and very young. I wish they would have dropped these infants at a hospital, police station or church. I totally agree that these babies could have faced a worse fate.

Maybe people don’t get angry because they have even a little bit of empathy for mothers who feel that they have absolutely no other choice. As none in this story experienced any of the things you listed, a warning wasn’t necessary. And a “public health warning” about what? What maybe should have appeared is a list of places where infants can be safely left with no risk to a desperate mother

A lot of comments, wondering why would a birth mother abandon their child. A big influence , would be lack of extended family support. Mother / father / siblings of the birth mom would notice a pregnancy if birth mom had a good relationship with them. Plus, if birth mom had any hardships, relatives would have offered to help. So to resort to abandonment, it says a lot about how isolated these birth moms were at the time of baby's birth.

Was Karen the one that was left in front of a pub? It would make sense that her mom would leave her on the step of the pub where the father worked. She might have been bitter if the dad said he'd leave his wife but then abandoned her.

I did my dna always joking I would find a half sibling due to my dads wandering. Little did I think I would find my moms half sister she never knew about all the way in Australia!! I know have a first cousin who I speak with on a weekly basis. Now I hope my mom and aunt will finally have a conversation
