As per the records, KIM Kum Yong's ITTF ranking is zero, nil, indicating she is non-ranked. However, she defeated the world No. 1, Sun Yingsha, and the 7th-ranked Miwa Harimoto, and won the gold medal.

Because of her success in the recently concluded Asian Championships. beating Sun Yingsha in the team event and Miwa Harimoto for the singles title she gained a massive 452 points and from out of nowhere, secured the number 57 position! If she continues to beat top class players she will be in the world top 10 in the future.

YES, everybody was cheering for Sun Yingsha, but little Kim showed what she's capable of, defeating the world number One. And as we all know now, she went on to beat Miwa Harimoto in the singles event and won herself the gold medal. A big CONGRATULATIONS to Kim Kum Yong!

In the case of Sun vs Kim, the predominantly Chinese crowd among the spectators were of course rooting for Sun. Obviously, a lot of Chinese people can afford to travel to other countries to cheer for their players, while there was no one from North Korea, except the North Korean team members.

@VititSongcharoen I hope one day both the WTT and ITTF will ban long and short pips. Say what you want, it has an unfair advantage that it nullifies spins. John Hilton won the European championship in 1980 because he managed to confused his opponents with the anti spinning rubber with the same color. Since then, the rubber must be of different color. I hope they will go one step further to ban the long and short pips rubber so that there is no unfair advantage and put everyone on the same level of playing fields.

I don't know that the CNT needs to adapt to the long-pips close-to-the-table style itself - other CNT members handled LP blocker/attackers like Manika Batra without much difficulty - so much as that they haven't run into a truly world-class exemplar of this style in years. Obviously, they haven't produced their own in a few decades (were there any since Deng Yaping?), but given how deep the provincial system's talent pool is they can probably produce three world-class clones of subsets of her style for their top 4 to practice against in pretty short order, which is the approach they've taken in the past when presented with 'crisis' players like Timo, Joo, Hirano, Harimoto, etc. They haven't had to go outside their own system to solve a problem since they sent Kong Linghui to Sweden.

It really doesn't mean anything Kim won once with her special rubber. Number one rank rating with over 7800 points is everything. Kim (ITTF No. 55 in world rank) could only win a short period.
