Bingo. If the engine is suddenly deprived of air (say, by quickly closing the throttle as you lift off the gas to shift) it leads to incomplete combustion and worsens the emissions. Most modern direct-injected engines will automatically slow or limit the throttle closing to help prevent this, but it comes with that unfortunate side-effect of delaying and/or slowing the drop in revs.

While I’m glad that you chose to save the old rusted used Subaru Forester, because buying, repairing and driving used cars does much more for saving the environment than purchasing a newly manufactured hybrid/electric car ever could. However I can not deny the allure of driving a brand new mint car. As long as the car has at least 4 seats, a strong manual transmission, a reputable/reliable engine, and isn’t rusted to pieces, the car’s fine by me. The only things I’d want out of a newer car is a back up camera, forward collision brakes, and the additional airbags.

7:21 This is one of my biggest pet peeves. If they desire max acceleration, YES bang it to red line. If you do the math, that is the way to create the most WHEEL TORQUE. Which is all that matters to acceleration. It won't hurt the engine, it's designed to rev that high. "Stressing the bearings and stressing the system". The inertial forces of that little engine with a very short stroke revving are not significant, you WONT hurt this engine revving it. Neither will you hurt an EJ25 which actually has a SHORTER stroke than this engine iirc, although the EJ25 does have poor oiling to certain connecting rods. Seriously though people, get over rev-anxiety. This isn't the days of pushrod V8s with no rev limiter and flimsy stamped steel rockers. It's a damn ohc engine, it's FINE.
@emperorpalpatine30885 жыл бұрын

@@emperorpalpatine3088 But that's not clear. He makes it sound like going to red line is the no-no uh oh zone. No, it's fine. It's literally in the design criteria, it will be fine. Most people will probably shift around 4k rpm for a nice moderate acceleration.

Don`t like the hang but just anticipate and use it, it shifts great. I drove Subs from the 80s into the 00s. I would put head gaskets and timing belts on every 90000 myself. Got 250000 out them before rust killed them. Did not buy Subs for a long time because of big issues. I called some Subaru service people to see about these issues on this engine and they said that they had not replaced any head gaskets if that be true. So I bought one and I like it, sort of a practical sports car, it is fun. 1500 miles and the last tank got 31 mpg mixed. I will extend the warranty to the max as I don`t want to work on them any more. Time will tell.

I used to have an Impreza Hatch CVT w/ EyeSight(TM). Nicely put together and useful car. I had to replace the rear springs with stronger one at standard height to get rid of the rear squat. That was a really nice upgrade. I couldn't stand the CVT, though. Ironically, if it didn't do fake shifts, I wouldn't have minded it so much. EyeSight (3rd gen with color cameras, version 2 in the US) was fantastic, and I now have Honda-Sensing, so I have a comparison point. EyeSight behaves like it has a some ability to think about what's going on and adjust smoothly, whereas Honda-Sensing behaves like it just has a decision chart with a few items on it. Not very smooth at all. However, I can have Honda-Sensing with manual transmission, which is what I have now. EyeSight and manual transmission? Nope! That's why I didn't even consider Subaru. Same issue with Hyundai/Kia. No ACC + manual combinations. I would like to try TSS (Toyota Safety Sense), just to compare, but I'm not an auto journalist or anything. I looked at the new Corolla Hatch, but it felt too claustrophobic just sitting in it, so I didn't even test drive it.

is this a freeway 75 mph all day with 5 speed as in rpm too high and need a 6 th?
@thevideolord5 жыл бұрын
I drove a 2017 base model impreza hatch and it had a 6 speed in it Also I am almost certain that my 05 Outback 3.0R sedan has an electronic throttle because of the way that it behaves. PS: Would love you to drive it one day, its such a weird and interesting little car.

What Subaru brings to the party at the entry level compact market is AWD; every other manufacturer offers better engines, better transmissions, better interior materials & better tech, but only offers FWD at this price point. It's worth noting that the few optional AWD systems from other manufacturers are more like "FWD+" than AWD, which function more as traction control than true AWD (aside from the FoRS & Golf R which are way out of this price point).

Couldn't have said it better. There's plenty of videos where Rav4's and Crv's can't get unstuck if both front wheels are slipping because they can't transmit enough torque to the back wheels. I'll deal with Subaru's quirks to have good traction because where I live we get 200+ inches of snow every winter.

Traction control off on these cars is not truely off. Otherwise, I'd have one.
@fuzzywumble5 жыл бұрын
you mean in most* cars. in the Impreza, when it's off, it's off. all wheels get all power :D
@TheTerbil5 жыл бұрын
@@fuzzywumble No, no I meant in the Impreza. Try one in the snow (real snow), you'll see. The car cuts power no matter the traction control setting. It's just a matter of early intervention and less early intervention.
@fuzzywumble5 жыл бұрын
guess I haven't noticed it then. I haven't driven mine in the snow but I have driven on gravel and loose dirt and spun all 4 wheels doing some mild hooning lol. I could be wrong about tcs, but it's still a lot of fun with tcs off :D perhaps you need a wrx to get it truly off

I deliver pizza in a brand new VW Up! (tiny hatchback). The electric throttle is so annoying, to start from a stop you have to floor it, which will hold revs at exactly 2000rpm for about 2 seconds if you don't want it to stutter. Shifting is a pain because the revs are never right since they neither drop off nor climb right away. Much easier to rev match our old V70 diesel stick shift.

"..9 out of 10 car reviewers say the impreza is garbage...." But we always wonder about that one reviewer and here he is. Honestly, 0 to 60 times are just a gimmick.
