My truck looks a little silly with +3 deavers and eibachs so I've wanted to get a larger tire. The only problem with that is I rub the fender liners with stock wheels and tires. I think my best bet is for a set of true 35s. The look of 37s will just always be so compelling. Also I think the gen 3 gets away with "37s" because the bfgs run undersized and are fairly light compared to other tires.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
The Gen3 did not even change the pinch welds so it’s the smaller tires and the limiting of up travel. You put the wheels out with 0 offset wheels and your ripping fenders off on the Gen3.

So would a mid travel kit with 35s look dumb? (I know mid travel requires +2 fenders) Or another way to frame the question- would it be a waste to upgrade to full mid/long travel and stay on 35s?
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 4 ай бұрын
No. My gen1 was as mid travel on 35s when I got it and ran great like that for years. In fact when I switched to 37s she got a bit sluggish. Main reason I run 37s is to have more between the truck and obstacles. I can roll over more stuff without issues on 37s. But I’m also ready for all the extra maintenance like early replacements of all the ball joints.

@KeepItDirtyOffRoad

Did you do a spring lift or a traditional lift? Even if your just street driving, changing the angle of the front CV shafts does reduce their life. So they will run up against each other and eventually fail early. Also ball joints will still see more stress so you will need to keep and eye on them.

I swear man, everytime I mention the Raptor and what it can do, I always mention this channel. You do great reviews on the Raptor man. Still sucks ass that Ford did what they did to you but, it's awesome to see you test the shit out of the Raptor and that in the beginning Ford was replacing stuff. I've been going back and forth with either going for the Gen 2 or the Gen 3. The only reason I would want the Gen 3 is to be able to run 37s stock and have to upgrade my suspension. Also like a few other things like the 5 link, bigger screen, automatic tailgate and I believe there may be one more thing but, I definitely prefer the Gen 2 look over the Gen 3 look. The Gen 2 looks more robust. I know, I always ask but, things always change and there's always new information. I'm pretty sure there's something new that popped up and made you order the TRX which there's definitely awesome things about it but, I feel like it's just too heavy for what it's supposed to be able to do. Seen a couple people break their shit already and they weren't even close to the way you handle your Raptor. Anyways, with the fact that I would only be going for the Gen 3 to be able to get the 37 model, would you say to go for it or just wait until the Gen 2s drop in price and get a Gen 2? I would rather not have the 37s if they can't perform like they should.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
If you plan to stay stock, the Gen3 will be a beast and my recommendation. Hard to beat warranty support on 37s. But upgrades will be a problem with the gen3. More electronics will cause issues and even doing 0 offset wheels will turn into a problem where fenders get ripped off. If you plan to go wild with a mid travel setup, Gen1 and 2 are better. You won’t get much for your money to mid travel a gen3. The only reason we did not place an order for a Gen3 is because Ford is monitoring this channel and is being very vindictive. We would not be able to get any warranty support on a Gen3 if we showed it on dirt or modified anything. With most system now being electronic, it’s not a good option for us.
@drewzombiez
@drewzombiez 2 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad This really sucks man. I think this shit is ridiculous that they're doing this shit to you. I also don't want any other truck than the Raptor. I definitely plan on staying stock while going out on some trails. If I were to put a mid travel kit on the Gen 2 Raptor, would it be able to handle the 37s? If I did, I'd also be changing out the fenders to the wider Fiberwerx ones. The Gen 3 sounds good with the 5 things that I do like about it. I'm not a big fan of the front grill or how they designed the rear applique and I'm definitely not a fan at all of the new shifter they have in it. As I'm typing this, I feel like I'm leaning towards the Gen 2 now with the mid travel and wider fenders with 37s.

I’m on my 3rd set of 37’s on my 2014 Gen 1. The advice that I would give is look for the lightest 37” tire you can find. All 3 sets of mine have been around 69-73 lbs a piece. The 37x13.50 Nitto’s you ran were probably around 85-90 lbs. That is a HUGE difference in rotating mass! I had some 77 lb 37’s on my truck and hated it. The drag and gutless feeling of the motor was terrible. Unless you regear, my advice is stick to the lightest 37’s. BFG KO2’s, General ATX, and Cooper XLT are 3 of the lightest that I’ve found. Fun fact: my methods and 37’s are actually LIGHTER than the stock beadlock capable wheels with the stock 315 KO’s

I know you don't have this truck anymore, but at 4:00 and 4:20 you're pointing out rear tire contact on the driver-side towards the front and passenger-side towards the rear. This happens because of the way the shocks are mounted and allowed to rotate on their top mounting bolt. As the rear axel up-travels, it twists a little bit so that the driver-side will only hit the front and vice-versa. Fun fact: every Gen 2 Raptor will get the driver side to rub on complete compression. My truck was so bad that while I was slowly crawling sideways down a steep sanddune, I got so flexed out on that one tire that it RIPPED the metal liner and broke some of the plastic trim. STOCK at 5mph!!!!! Truck was a month old. I fought with Ford warranty and many dealerships for months and never got anything but the run around. Ford REFUSES to admit the problem.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Жыл бұрын
Yeah, lots don’t realize the 35s rub too, specially as you get closer to full tuck. Ford used to warranty that stuff, but now they deny anything that seems like offroad use or has any aftermarket components. Yet another reason I got rid of the truck. Had to rely heavily on the dealer to keep it running. On my Gen1 I can handle most fixes on my own.

A stock truck with upgraded bump stops can do just about any raptor run out there. So if you want warranty support and planning minimal upgrades pick 37. If your going to go wild with upgrades, save the money and get the 35 in version. You will still be able to play out of the box with more travel but you’ll save some money that can go into upgrades

I think the factory tuning from ford would handle the 37s alone on the gen3 ..?
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
The Gen3 tune bring on a little bit more power early on to help deal with the 37s. But like all turbo engines you get a quick jump in power at the front and then it goes flat. And that flatness in power makes the truck feel sluggish on the top end with 37s. You can feel the truck struggling a bit and it harder for it to hit the limiter. That’s where a V8 with a more Linear power curve would be better.

All the extra sensors in the 2019+ model raptors are good and a bit bad IMO for the weekend warrior, go hard or go home types. Raptors are a very capable truck with any year since its first debut. I have a 2018 Raptor and absolute love the truck, no 'live-valve' junk. I know from a racing stand point with motocross. The level of maintenance has to be factored in and stuff is going to break. The stock raptor shocks will fade after about an hour of hard driving offroad, in higher temps the stock intercooler will show its limits as well. As far as the 37s simply because they look cool, stick with the 35s. Do some home work with wheels and tires, it'll be a win win for you and the truck. Also if possible upgrade the suspension (I have Kings and stay away from front coil swaps with exception of Devers and bump stops which are a must if your planning on going hard like this dude or its just plan on it, its worth it) and intercooler. I loved this guys channel at the beginning, its changed some since his fallout with the 2020 raptor. Hurt my feelings when he mentioned he ordered a Ram, its all good 'Keep it dirty off-road.' "LIME GREEEEN!"
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
🤣🤣 we still have a Raptor though 🤷‍♂️. Gen1 now, so more analog and better suited for our needs. The only reason we ordered a TRX is to see what it can do. No one is really trying to abuse those offroad yet. We want to try it. And I’m nervous about all the extra electronics in the Gen3 causing problems. TRX also has the notorious RAM can bus system too so it’s in the same boat. Your totally spot on, on the Raptors. With proper upgrades and planned maintenance 37s are doable. But she will perform at her best with 35s. The 2020 truck was just frustrating. A year and a half of nothing but problems and did sour me on the platform. My 17 was rock solid by comparison. But what really soured us on the platform was Ford. The way they treated us sucked man.

Where do you offroad? I get a lot of you guys saying this then we find out your on the east coast or something like that, no where near any high speed trails. 35s will rub at full tuck. 37s will rip off fenders at full tuck if you don’t do any trimming with stock offset or 0 offset wheels. We’ve ran 34 offset with stock beadlocks before and damaged our fenders on my 17 Raptor. We had to do pinch welds and a ton of trimming to clear. We even did race series shocks and still saw rubbing. rubbing will happen regardless with stock 34 offset wheels or 0 offset. Now, I have the clips to backup what I’m saying. Where’s yours?

Ok. So decent trails. Being that tall over stock means reduced life of your axles. The boots will fail eventually. Take a look at your fenders next time. If you seeing any rubbing near the upper back of the fender near the bolts back there, your tempting fate. There is a bracket back there. if you catch or push on that hard enough you will destroy your fenders. I’ve ran a similar setup before when I had geisers. They limited up travel a lot and I got very close to ripping off my fenders a few times. But I was pushing the limits of the truck.
@IISevv
@IISevv 2 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad True the axle boots will fail. Not much I can do about the height (when I said 2” over stock I meant over what the trucks come from the factory) as I had to crank up the coilovers about 3/4” or so to level the truck with my icon leaf springs, even with a lowering shackle. I went with autozone axles as they’re only $100 each, they keep them in stock near me, and have unlimited lifetime warranty. An hour or two to change a free axle every few months is fine with me. Just figured I would mention it as I originally had 35’s and was completely convinced the 37’s would rub based on what I saw online and have found that to not be the case.

You don't know how to properly setup a truck for 37's. Stock offset wheels then front and rear bumps can be set to have no rubbing or minimize(your choice) You had a steering issue before the 37's did you think they would fix it? It is also not hard to find 37's and aftermarket wheels that are lighter than stock.

It does not matter if you get lighter wheels, the 37s will still be more rolling mass. And offroad that mass wears out joints quick. I pushed the limits of what the truck can do with a stock ish suspension (only spring upgrades). I’ve ran stock wheels with 37s on my 17raptor and had issues with rubbing and damaging fenders and I learned from those issues in my 20 and did 0 offset with more trimming because I almost ripped off the fenders on my 17. I got to a point where my 20 was fully functional offroad with 37s. But the steering could not handle it. Others that push it like I do, saw the same problems and just accepted it. Only difference between them and I is how often they hit the trails. I was out there a lot. So now I have a rig that can handle 37s and will be keeping a close eye on all the joints

How does a lighter tire and wheel have more mass? Your reply ignored the bump stops, it's a total package needed if you want 37's and stock fenders. If your suspension is setup properly to run 37's on that truck you will not be hitting/rubbing period. You will lose up travel and it is arguable if there is any benefit but that's not what my comments were about. You also ignored the statement about your steering already having issues that should have been fixed before running 37's. Anyone watching this needs to know the reality. Slapping 37's on a truck with screwed up steering is a bad idea. Running wheels that stick out further on a Raptor requires wider fenders or they will hit. If you want 37's and stock fenders keep a positive offset close to stock and set bump stops to limit uptravel wherever you are comfortable. I am willing to bet your new truck has front bump stops setup correctly? If so take them off and make a run. Let us know what happens.

I rubbed on the back with bump stops on both trucks. Both rubbed the inside corner of the wheel well and my 20 self trimmed the back. Check the video. Ive seen others truck rub with rear bump kits as well 🤷‍♂️. Front bump that strike on the LCA are kind of a cheat. They are within an inch of striking and account for close to 40% of the up travel. They should be at the last 10 percent and actually negate the proper function of the internal bypass shocks up front. I had this conversation with the guys at SVC and will have that video up soon. But a properly tuned suspension should not need a front bump. My Gen1 leverages the bypass shock to avoid bottoming out but will still rub. Can’t avoid it. Now lastly, rolling weight. Let’s say you find a 37in wheel and tire package that weights the same as 35s. That lower weight is still rolling in a larger diameter and therefore puts a great load than stock. Lower weight will reduce the impact, but won’t negate it. As for steering, that was just one factor. After 3 steering racks and all kinds of other parts replaced it could not be fixed. It was a software glitch that all Gen2s have. Ive talked to plenty of guys that push it like I do, and they all have seen it. Most on highly modified trucks so they are on their own. Some on stock trucks and it only jerks so they just accept it. The point of this video, that you missed, is that in order to do 37s you need a properly designed suspension. Light trimming is not enough, spring upgrades is not enough. It requires shocks, bumps, shock tuning, etc….. my starting point would be Icons stage4 kit for the Raptor, with the next level being a mid travel kit like SVC, RPG, HM, Baja kits. And even then. Expect more maintenance regardless because those Heim joints don’t last long.

You win. You are completely wrong but hey keep spewing bad information. The point of the video you say I missed was exactly what I said. You need a properly setup suspension for that tire on that truck. So what did

Dude, we are on the same page for the most part. But we have different opinions on what a properly setup suspension is. The whole point of this video series is to test the myth of a low budget setup with 37s. Low budget meaning no shocks, springs only and some bumps. And we found it don’t work. I’ve talked to several shops about this. SVC, RPG, and HM and they all agree with what I’m saying. They have done it way more times than I have and know what it takes to make it work. So don’t believe what I’m saying here. Go talk to the guys in the know. I’ve backed my opinions with real world testing and I filmed it all. I’ve been running the Cali deserts for years, running much faster than this truck was designed to run. And I’ve formed this opinion based on my experiences and those that run with us here. Where are you running your truck and what year and setup do you have?

Shorter wheel base and rarity. Do you know how many supercabs were made? Super crews are more cause suv mom needs room for her kids. Don't know why u would go super crew for offroad over the supercab. Heavier and longer
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad

🤷‍♂️ they still don’t hold their value like a super crew. I get it it’s a better wheelbase, it’s closer to a trophy truck. But these aren’t trophy trucks. They are trucks we sometimes use to offroad. I have a family and prefer my kids don’t smash their knees on the front seats. And I like the extra storage for extended runs. And I like that supercrews are always worth more 😁.

If you’re going to off-road the shit out of it no 37s are not worth it. If it’s a street queen then I don’t think there’s much of a difference other than the increased wear and tear but that’s not Raptor specific
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 11 ай бұрын
Not sure I agree with you there. With 37s, or any bigger size for that matter, your going to be able to just roll over more things without incident. My gen2 with 37s was more capable and could handle more. Thing that hit hard with 35s, we’re like nothing with 37s. So for off-roading there is big benefits. But they come with a trade off. Increased wear and more maintenance. But to some that’s worth it.

Your review is somewhat accurate and it portraits more to your case and setup. 1st: you changed your wheels to 0mm offset from stock +34mm offset which added additional 1.34" of wheel sticking out which means you suppose to add additional 1.34" of lift on top of 2" from 37" tires to accompensate for offset and tires. Another words to clear everything with your setup you suppose to add 3.34" of height to the front to clear everything. I know this is not possible with Raptor using any kind of springs or colar unless you go with lift kit, but that's what it should be to eliminate 95% of trimming and any rubbing. 2nd: you went with Eibach Springs which added only 1.75" of lift and over time they saddle to about little bit more then 1.5" with LiveValves but in reality you needed aprox. 3.34" to clear your setup. 3rd: If you would go with 37" tires on stock wheels you would need only about 2" of lift to clear everything. Geiser springs provide 2.5" of lift on LiveValves instead of 1.75" from Eibachs. Another words as stated before if you would leave stock wheels and added 37" tires (sticking with KO2'S whuch run smaller then true 37's) on top of Geisers you would have minimal trimming if any (maybe on full tuck).

Wow man, your so wrong. First of all never ever put a lift kit on a Raptor. It won’t last offroad and break on the first jump. 2nd, we did 37s on stock wheels on my 17 and saw massive rubbing. Rip your fenders off rubbing and we were about to do the extra trimming before the accident. My 17 had Geisers and still rubbed to the point or ripping fenders off. We upgraded the shocks and pre loaded the front suspension 2.5in and she still was going to rip fenders off. Your math is way off and does not actually work in the real world. The most functional we got was with the Eibachs on 0 offset with the extra trimming. Mind you, mid travel trucks with fenders rub too with 37s. Only difference there is you won’t rip your fenders off. That’s where we got with our trimming
