hey, you can see my house from here! seriously, though. it has been so many years since i've been to the top of camel's hump when it wasn't winter. it's actually easier in winter, because snow smooths it a little and you can sled down nearly a third of the way. back in my youth the LT used to come off of camel's hump onto robbins mountain and you'd resupply in jonesville. this section in this video is probably why i live here today. i am the land steward in the town forest between the footbridge and route 2. thanks for coming through our forest.

I can't thank you enough for filming in real time, without music, and giving us detail you can't find on a map. My last section hike of SHT was AWESOME because I had watched your hike of section, over and over, and knew what to expect.

I love the fact there is no music as well. I always appreciate the work vloggers put in but can't stand all the music and the intros. Red Beard gets right to it no BS.

Yeah I always prefer videos without music as well, people often have different tastes in music and the music can’t ruin a video that’s for sure. Really glad my SHT videos were helpful. 👍👍

Thanks for making this great video. I retired a couple months ago and plan on doing the LT in September. Most of my hiking takes place in the Whites so I am used to no switch backs and the trails being rough. Over the last year I have switched out my gear for lighter Zpacks gear. That has been a game changer for me. Dropping weight has really helped. Again thanks for sharing this.

Hey Redbeard, great videos. You are hiking in my backyard. I live up in the Champlain Islands on Isle LaMotte. If you liked the long trail, you should do yourself a favor and come back in the winter. It is a real treat to hike up Mt. Mansfield in the winter. I usually head up in November around Veterans Day. The leaves are all down and you get much better views. Plus the snow isn’t too deep yet. You can stay overnight at Butler Lodge or the one on the other side of Mansfield.

I've hiked in this area my whole life since I live here. So weird to see it on KZbin and glad you enjoyed my stomping grounds. I'm definitely spoiled lol :-) PS: You're definitely not alone in being intimidated by the hump. It really does look like the trail goes straight up the cliff.

I'm looking to do the LT this summer, mostly all planned out, just waiting. My days were matching up with you exactly, until day 9, but then you pushed a little further and ended up exactly where I intended to stop. Then your next day pretty much matched mine. It's my first time on this long of a hike, so it's nice to know my plans are not unrealistic.

Hey Will! I was really excited when you said you were making these. I watched some of your AT and PCT videos which inspired me to hike the Long Trail last summer. I had the same experience on Mansfield (crazy win), it was my favorite day though. I'm glad you are enjoying the trail so much. I absolutely had a blast. I thought it was interesting that you guys slept by the Middlebury ski lift. I had thoughts of doing stuff like that but stuck to shelters.

Hey Will, what are your go-to hiking pants? Awesome video series, man! I did 45 miles of the southern section last week between rte 9 and Mad Tom Notch Rd, and I absolutely loved it. Great video with some great company. I always love how you describe trail conditions and how sections were with a lot of detail, you are like a walking guide book. I may have asked you this before, but looking at the vertical climbs in this trail, what do you do when you are off trail to prepare for that kind of terrain? or for any long hike, for that matter.

Thanks for the kind words. Well I also own a farm so that keeps me in shape somewhat but once you have done long distance hikes over 2,000 miles or so your legs are never the same. I can usually jump off the couch and not have issues luckily. I just don’t try and do 20’s for the first few weeks and allow for my legs to get used to it again.

Following Redbeard My nephew and I did the Long Trail to Stratton and even though it was not as strenuous as the parts farther on it was challenging. I thought that I could go 15 miles a day. I managed 7-8. We did @47 miles from Williamstown MA to the Gondola at Stratton in 5&1/2 days. Not the best way to train for the AT but it opened my eyes. We intend to get another section done soon. It's probably more wilderness than the 100 mile one in Maine from my experience and seeing your videos.. Good privies abound as do shelters.

Ah! You have figured out how rough the LT. As for the blow downs, you were there very early in the season. Most of the maintenance is done by volunteers. They will get those sections cleaned up shortly. BTW the "crappy shelters" comment was uncalled for; "WIDG" GMC Volunteer

Robert Widger the trail was mostly in incredible shape. The trail maintenance was wonderful. I loved Vermont. I’ve hiked many places, the shelters were wonderful on this hike don’t take it personally but I’m honest and some shelters were more basic, not a bad thing at all. Nothing to be upset about. Cheers✌️

Glad your enjoying the trail the videos really bring back memories although I still get out and do a weekend on the LT when I can. Suggestion: Z Paks should get out and do some trail maintenance on whatever trail "floats your boat". I would love to see a video of that. There are a lot of hikers out there who give back to the trails we enjoy as volunteers.

Hello Will, Question? I am considering buying the Sony fdr x3000 that you use & take it on my Nobo JMT hike next month. How many extra batteries would you take? I'm bringing a Suntactics solar charger. I'm waiting to hear from Chad ( sticks blog) when he gets back to see if charger worked for him. Doing same exact trail him & Benny are doing. I will be shooting a lot of video on the Sony & my iphone x. Thanks Tom KZbin.com/c/followingwalkersworld

I typically carry 3 and also my anker. Typically though the 3 batteries provides plenty of juice for a 5-7 day hike and then I recharge in town. Honestly I really prefer the 20,000 mah ankers to the solar chargers myself because I am constantly using my phone and cameras. But the solar should work well too especially on the JMT.
