I used this video as an inspiration to make a platform. I got a folding table from walmart and made the height of the platform the same thickness as the table so it just stores underneath. And now I can mount a fridge slide to it. I used 4 turnbuckles to secure it to the 4 stock D-rings.

good call on the 1/2 inch plywood. i am mystified why people use 3/4 ply for a short span like a vehicle interior. 1/2 inch is plenty strong. you can always put another leg under an area that needs support. as you say it is much lighter. it is also much cheaper.

I noticed that you have a strap on your back hatch door to keep it from hitting the garage door, which is a great idea. I split 1” x 4’ piece of vinyl tubing down the middle and pop riveted it to the back edge of the garage door where the hatch would hit. It creates a nice soft edge for the hatch to rest on.
@GrizzlyPath3 жыл бұрын
Haha good eye, and good idea! I ended up replacing the strap in this video with something more subtle. The setup is the same with the bungee in the middle, but the strap was replaced with a piece of paracord and a carabiner so it’s much more low pro. I like your vinyl strip idea, creative!

I did something very similar to my 4runner last summer. My platform is in two pieces that correspond to the split rear seats and sit on 1x3s. I left a couple of inches of carpet hanging over the rear edge. I thought about using some turn buckles to secure the rear, but settled on a small ratchet strap across the back between the two rear tie down points to keep the platform in place in case of accident or when bouncing around offroad.

So, the weight you saved by going with 1/2" ply instead of 3/4" ply, you added back, or more, with that center support. Would you do that again? I guess that depends on how much weight you plan to put on that platform.
@GrizzlyPathАй бұрын
Not sure if I fully added it back, but you’re right that it’s not a full savings. I would do it again, because even with 3/4 ply I think it would bow in the middle under enough weight, especially since this leveling platform has no “back” support. If it was a drawer box or something the. 3/4 may not bow, but for this application I think you’ll need a middle support no matter what. With that being said, I think the 1/2 saves a bit of weight and material for sure.

You can do almost all of this with a jigsaw, a drill, a tape measure, a hammer, a knife, and a few clamps. Its defintely quicker if you have all the big tools but it's totally doable with minimal tools and skills.

Sorry I don’t have precise dimensions on hand, but I just measured front/back from the back of the seat to about halfway over the plastic near the hatch so the hatch wouldn’t hit. Then side to side between wheel wells where it’s tightest. I left about an extra 1/8” gap all around for the carpet. Definitely recommend just measuring with a tape measure. I also have a more recent video with an update you should watch because I’ve made some changes since then you might find valuable for incorporating into your own design, however it does require more advanced tooling. I was aiming for a total height of 2.5-3”, the felt ended up being approximately 1/8” or so thick, plus the 1/2 plywood top. So I cut the three 2X4 legs down to about 2” if I recall. Their length is just slightly shorter than the depth of the platform so you can’t see them and because there’s an angled bit behind the back seat. If you plan to do this those legs are the easy part, you’ll just need to measure to get the height you want (flush with folded seat). Good luck!

Off-topic: Where did you get the eye hooks that you inserted under the coat hangers in the rear of your 4Runner? I want to do that but the problem I'm having is finding eye hooks with the proper thread count so I can screw them into the hole where the hangers are at the ceiling. Locally I'm only finding 20-thread counts and the screw that comes with the hanger has got to be 24-count. I thought you had mentioned something about it in one of your videos but I can't find it.

The bolt holes are M6 so I used these: amzn.to/3tXWV7n Hopefully that helps! The swap is super easy and quick.

@@GrizzlyPath Update: I added the aluminum L-bracket edging like you did on your update and it looks great. When I built mine I did half of the sliding table so that I'd have room on the other side to store my reflectex window covers and other flat items. I'm about to add the D-rings as you had on your update which will be very useful for an upcoming trip we're taking to Iowa (from Louisiana). I'm not surprised this has been your most popular video. It allowed others to add personal touches during the process and not feel like you had to follow hard instructions.

Your idea is great, can you share your measurements?
@GrizzlyPath2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I don’t have the measurements handy, but it’s really easy to measure. Measure the width between the two wheel wells, minus 1/8” on both sides to account for carpet if using it. Then measure from top of the angled floor behind the rear seat (contains D-rings) to approximately the plastic at the hatch, again subtract 1/8” from both sides for carpet. Height you can measure to the top of that same angled floor piece behind the rear seats.

How did you know what height the rear platform needed to be in order to be level with the rear seat ? Like how did you figure that out?
@GrizzlyPath2 жыл бұрын
Gosh, off the top of my head I can’t remember. But it’s super easy to measure: with your trunk empty and you’d rear seats down, put a 2x4 or something on the back seats sticking over the trunk area and measure the height above the trunk. It’s something like 2.75-3” or so.

Oh yeah so you’ll just wanna do some measuring and eyeballing, should be able to get it figured!

Great idea! What’s the measurements?

Thanks! I was inspired by random other builds but thought I’d put my own spin on it. I’ve since made a couple small changes, I’ll need to post and update video! Sorry no dimensions on hand, but it’s pretty dang easy to measure. Just take into account about 1/8” on all sides for carpet if you use it!

@@GrizzlyPath thank you, building mine today. I have the same model 4Runner.

Nice build; I just started building something similar to mine. Where did you get the carpet?

Thanks dude! I’ve made a few changes since then with some more plans coming for the future but haven’t done anything significant enough to warrant a new video! I got the carpet from Home Depot.

How did you anchor down your platform?
@GrizzlyPath2 жыл бұрын
Good question! In this video I didn’t. When securing things I would hook to the OEM tie downs to suck everything down secured. BUT I have made some changes since this video and modified it where instead of cut outs in the forward section, there are through bolts that go in where the D rings are to secure the front. That pretty much holds it down 100% but I am planning to add wings to the rear portion near the hatch and secure where those D rings are also. I’ll eventually make another video on that, but hopefully that gives you some ideas!
@UtahNick712 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of some D rings under the rear of platform and then using turnbuckles. Then again I’m only keeping it inside when I go camping so it’s not like it’s going anywhere with a fridge strapped down anyway.
@gianp97353 жыл бұрын
Maybe I missed it, how is it secured to the 4Runner?
@GrizzlyPath3 жыл бұрын
It’s not secured down. By itself it weighs about 15-20# and is wedged in. When I have items in the back for trips I use straps connected to the OEM D-rings to hold everything down. In the past with a DIY drawer system I made I secured it to stock D-rings using turnbuckles. But that thing weighed like 100# and had gear stored in it.

Back seats still recline like normal with this setup, only impacted by what you put in the trunk space like normal.
