In this series so far, we have explored airline planning, obtaining finances, and how to begin putting the key elements of your airline together. But being an airline, acquiring some actual aircraft is a key part of the process! In this fifth episode of the series, we explore the options open to a new startup airline when looking at equipping a new fleet to commence operations.

I've said all along in this series that I'd go with an all Boeing 787 fleet, but with different variants to suit different routes and passenger demand. Flying medium to long haul routes based in Shannon, but a mainly point to point rather than hub & spoke model. Everyone would love to own their aircraft from the start but, assuming I got everything right up to now in the series, there would be a lot of money spent already so buying might not be the best option. I would consider the Emirates and easyJet option of getting another airline to operate initially while waiting to get certified and exploring leasing options. 787s aren't that old so even leasing 2nd hand planes won't be cheap.

This was the long haul strategy of Norwegian and that didn’t work out. The 787 has had some problems which likely wouldn’t affect “your” airline however there would have to be sizable demand for flying out of Shannon which I don’t think is there

🔥 Long story short, I would go with something small. Like a Saab 340 or a CRJ2. And work my way up in the future.

The 787-8 is the perfect aircraft for thin long haul routes and point to point services such as Pittsburgh to London Heathrow.

CRJ-7 for short flights (ex: DFW-HOU), A321neos for medium haul flights (LAX- SEA, JFK-SEA/LAX, 2+ hours), long haul flights: B777-300ERS for longer flights out of MONTREAL (hub)(ex: LHR, CDG, NRT, ect) and A330-200 for trans continental (vancouver, YYZ, LAX, MIA, ect.)

No to boeings and airbus, easy maintenance but big sharks are super duper costly. Will go with a Mitsubishi MRJ (90 or 100X), or Bombardier (Q400 or CRJ-7), or Comac ARJ21 or Saab 340 (last 2 not so likely). You guys got the idea right, they are almost equivalent but far cheaper with fewer to no fatalities so far. And lastly, Mitsubishi, bombardier and comac have headquarters in Canada or US. Comac one is not so efficient.

Dear ‘Long Haul by Simple Flying’. I am thoroughly enjoying 😉 your “How To Start An Airline” series. I find them very fascinating 🤨 indeed. They enable me to experience the headache 🤕 that those who start airlines face just merely for fun 🤩 and I like 👍 it and I keep going back for more. I have therefore made the decision that it is fair to say that the “How To Start An Airline” series can be characterised as my favourite 🤩 ‘Long Haul by Simple Flying’ videos ever. Keep 🆙 da good 👍 work 😓, ‘Simple Flying’ & ‘Long Haul by Simple Flying’. I can’t wait 😛 to see “Part 6”. Cheers 🥂, ‘Long Haul by Simple Flying’. Love 💙💛, regards and greetings 🫂 from Nicky Mitchell.

But at first, for domestic operations, I’d run older E-190 aircraft that are purchased or leased from other airlines. For time being, would possibly find another airline to operate certain routes on behalf of the airline, such as Finnair
