That's a two edged blade there, in my opinion. If a company manufacturers an outstanding watch and ships it in a cardboard box, it causes me to worry. A mediocre watch shipped in an extravagant container also raises red flags in my mind. Packaging has got to be something legit watch companies wrestle with continually. At the end of the day it's all about the watch.

I'd like to see a torture test where someone takes the base-model Marathon GPQ and tests it at 30, 50, and 100 ATMs. I suspect it will exceed the minimums. But if it doesn't, it's still a basic, inexpensive watch for the troops. Probably 99% of the watches go through the military service without deep puddles being an issue. I looked at one of these before, and for a little bit more money, I bought the Marathon Navigator with date. The sapphire crystal and Tritium indices make the watch awesome. It is so light, it's the most comfortable watch during these "heat emergency" days. When I flew during Desert Storm, I wore a Seiko 7A28-7039 and kept a GShock as a spare. If I had access to the Navigator back then, I would have grabbed one up.

So I got one of these with tritium tubes a month or so ago. I’ve never owned a watch with lume paint, but I honestly wouldn’t want any more brightness coming from my watch. If it’s dark enough that I can’t see the dial, it’s dark enough that I can see the tubes. Not to start a tangent here, but why do people not like tritium? I can read it in any light I find myself, and I can read it just as well at 6am as I can at 9pm. Plus, for those folks interested in being sneaky, wouldn’t they want less stuff on their person glowing in the dark?

I like these. Simple design and they look like they'll take a beating. I would like to see a bit more WR on them, as others say. Give me 100m and I'd be happier. I can understand why they don't have the WR, though, because if you're not getting wet it's arguable you don't need the WR, and also the battery cover provides easy battery swaps when needed without having to have a caseback tool. I have a Bertucci A-2T classic that I spent about the same money on and is just as rugged with titanium case, sapphire crystal, 200m WR, 10 year lith-ion battery, etc. For the money, definitely the better buy, I think, but these Marathons are cool watches and part of the allure in them is they are a basic military watch.

How can a military watch only be 30m WR?
@davebuck24943 жыл бұрын
Because the military specification does not call for your average soldier to go diving. This watch is fine for rainstorms, or if you trip crossing a stream or river, and that is all that is required. If you are in a trade that may require you to dive or swim underwater, the military would issue a different watch, perhaps the Marathon GSAR.
