The halberdier can backward or change the hands on the staff to change the guard range. Also half-swording mean you reduce the weapon's teach, more difficult to hit the halberdier and easier to be hit before you can get inside his guard range. Why the half swording works: Against the halberd, the reach disadvantage is so severe, that even an extra foot or two makes little difference. However, gripping at the half sword means that he equalizes another great disadvantage which is leverage. @justiniani.45014 жыл бұрын
Because the shaft will always move faster than the opponent's hand. While grabbing the shaft is one of the official techniques of dealing with a pole weapon, it's more of a best case scenario. In most circumstances, you won't have the reflexes to catch the pole of even a mildly decent polearm user, since it's incredibly easy to either move it back or down out of the person's reach, and since pointing the halberd downward is also a completely viable and functional technique for the halberdier, there isn't much for the opposing party to exploit.

Longstaff vs Shortstaff. Honestly the weight and wield of the actual weapons dictated its entire application. It can be foam sure, but weight must be added (3.5 KG halberd head/1.5KG Longsword) to the historically relevant areas for play weapons to actually be called one thing or another.

Something that comes to mind for me is to think about how heavy a real wood and metal halberd actually is. This is a good-natured sparring session and that's important to remember, but a real showdown between two people wielding these weapons in full armor would look a lot different, in my opinion. I've fought in and won an amateur fight in full plate/brigandine on the chest and from what I remember of the 5 rounds, it's suuuuper easy to get locked up with your opponent upon first contact, totally overlooking the other issue of how hard it is to fucking breath through a helmet. On top of the factor of the weight of the armor, the offset weight of a really heavy weapon like a halberd just couldn't be wielded in the same way this guy is using what he's holding. In the video, he's practically using a spear that also scores on a tap that wouldn't do shit in a real fight given the lack of momentum behind it. All this is to say, I think in a real fight between metal armed combatants, the longsword takes it 9/10. I fully understand its HEMA and it's a different world/rule-set/discipline, but I'd love to know anyone's thoughts on the matter.

A longsword is 1.4 kilograms. A halberd is 3 kilograms. If 2 decently skilled fighters fought with these weapons, I'd bet 9/10, the halberdier will win.
@timothyling19544 жыл бұрын
@@shadekeigarblacksky Longswords and swords, in general, are weighted to be incredibly balanced. Using any sort of ax or weapon with the dominant load at the end of a stick takes drastically more effort to swing. Pick up a 5lb rod of steel and then pick up a sledgehammer with a 5lbs weight on the end of it. Different animals and different speeds at which you can draw a weapon, react to a threat, or even swing.

I would've gone straight to half-swording as soon as I saw that halberd. A little surprised it took awhile before switching to that, experimenting maybe? But before that I did think about trying to use a back swing to hook the underside of the halberd, and that's exactly what he did a few times. Fellow with the halberd either needs to find a Poleaxe or do a bit more sparring and training. Finally used reach in that last hit, good work. I couldn't tell from here, and with the gloves so thick, but is that a bastard sword? Seemed a tad short; not a problem, my favorite sword, but just wanting double-check if that was right.

This just goes to show even if the longsword user is more skilled the halbred is easier to use because of the range simple use for new people, but in the end the better weapon wins

@@bilinmeyen3391 Oh 100%. It has alot more reach and everything about it is better than a sword, but you missed my point. What im saying is if you gave a skilled swordsmen a sword and a peasant / non trained person a halberd, most likely the halberd will still win and the swordsmen is going to have to work alot harder to defeat the halberd user because of the superior weapon design. Theres a reason these weapons dominated history
