@MrTBoneSF3 жыл бұрын
@@KevKlopper It was just a pile of ignorance, FUD, and/or bad faith arguments. Every strawman argument you could imagine was rolled up into one bad article. One of the most laughable was the 5G was not only a viable alternative, but was a better option even though probably 99% percent of the service area of Starlink has right now has no 5G coverage and easily 95% of the places WITH 5G coverage already have multiple, better and cheaper broadband options. That's putting aside the crippling data caps (which they someone get away with advertising as "unlimited"), throttling, and overall expense of 5G right now. Besides, does The Verge have any tech reporting cred left after that "Building a Gaming PC" video fiasco?

Lon, just as a word of warning, though I don't recall exactly where I saw it, I did see a comment from Starlink Support that they don't really support your planned usage of stop/start service. I.e. if you stop service it may not be a simple matter (or even possible) to restart it when you want. At least that was the then current position of the company a month or two ago. Whether that will remain the case once the service is in "wide release" or if anything has changed in the meanwhile, I don't know. But you should definitely touch base with support to be sure you can use it the way you want before actually stopping service.
@LonSeidman3 жыл бұрын
Yes I reached out to support - they said so long as they have spots available they will reactivate but service but can’t guarantee availability. Because I’m in an area with decent (albeit monopoly controlled) broadband I should be ok. I don’t think there are all that many starlink owners since I know most of them in my town :)
@johntierney33533 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that if you stop the service, there is no guarantee, that there will be enough unused capacity in your area that Star Link will restart you service. So if this is to be an insurance policy then you keep paying your premium. An interesting web sit: satellitemap.space . This will show you the star link satellites that are flying over your area and the land base station that you should be using to connect. Why is the dish not grounded like an outdoor antenna is required to be?

I don't think you can put Starlink service "on hold". You cancel the service. Then you hope that you can restart when you call back. Your cancelation may have opened the door for another customer in your area to activate so now they have bumped back to the max number of customers in your area (cell). You can test this by typing in a neighbour's address and see what the estimate is for them to get service. I suspect that is what you would expect for a reconnect.

Comcast in my town has its cable strung on the telephone/electric poles, as is the line running to my house. The electric company keeps ITS lines clear of trees, but refuses to clear the trees that are growing up into the cable and telephone lines. I am looking out right now at the massive growth up in those lines from the neighbor's trees. I have complained to Comcast, and they respond that if the line breaks, they will fix it then.

No. Supposedly it will not have the capacity to handle large numbers of subscribers in congested urban areas. Particularly multi=family housing units. I have and hate Comcast equally. I am a free-market capitalist, but the US lags far behind the rest of the world in providing higher speed (fiber) service. Internet service has become a public utility like water, electric and gas. It used to be just a play thing for computer nerds with dial=up modems, but that has changed. Something needs to be done.

Regarding the dish's startup lag time, you say the long wait was only on initial setup and that subsequent startups should be much faster (a prediction) because it was faster on your second attempt.
