Thanks for the vid.. We got our kit today. One side note, burning wood is only carbon neutral if you plant new trees to absorb the carbon you released when you burned your wood.
@joshseidman4 жыл бұрын
You are correct : ) we have two things going for us, especially in vermont. One is that wood is not a fossil fuel, the carbon sequestered in a tree was in the atmosphere and absorbed by that tree during its life. Lets say 10-200 years (as opposed to fossil fuels sequestered millions of years ago). That makes tree carbon active carbon in todays carbon cycle (as opposed to fossil carbon). Semantics, i know. Secondly, our relatively humid climate in vermont allows trees to propogate quite naturally. Dont mow your lawn for a growing season and you have already planted a forest! Every opening in our canopy is quickly closed and any light hitting the forest floor is quickly utilized by a vivacious seedling : ) regardless, thanks for the feedback

Here was part of the comment: go into the Orbi router and set it to a new tcp lan series (I used 192.168.2.x) - his old address was 192.168.1x. They plugged into AUX port. I have seen many start to ask questions about Mesh systems for Starlink. Starlink says they don't support, but the way they word it is rather vague. People are using Mesh, and showing people how to set that up might help traffic to your channel! I put in my deposit yesterday, and it did as fast as my fingers could type! lol KY here!

There’s a few other power tests of StarLink, when it’s cold/snowing (it heats the dish to melt the snow), average shows as 190 Watts or so, but what’s a little bit of power, compared to the alternative of going back to almost nothing?
@daveschmarder-US19504 жыл бұрын
@@mwolrich In my case it wouldn't be going back to nothing. When I moved here 40 years ago, I wanted cable tv service, due to the rural nature around here. So I selected where I lived partly based on that. 20 years later, it had an additional benefit. I still dislike cable monopolies. For me, installing that would raise my electric bill by about 60% in the winter time. I have a friend out in the sticks that I believe would benefit from this system.
@mwolrich4 жыл бұрын
@@daveschmarder-US1950 call it 200W, that’s 4.8KW/day, only when temperatures are low enough for the heater to turn on. I have a NetZero house, with 10KW PV, even in the dead of winter, on a sunny day, it generates 65KW, and depending on temperature, house consumes 45-55KW/day, more if I charge the electric car. It’s still worth it, to reduce my dependence on COMCAST which has multiple short outages constantly, I’ve noticed it more and more since working from home.. StarLink also has outages, the difference? I’m %100 sure StarLink will become much much better, while I’m also sure COMCAST will continue to be horrible, not to mention the data caps being put in place. I will be lowering COMCAST to their lowest, minimum internet, and they will become the backup to StarLink. Also cable TV & phone will be cut, already transitioned over to IPTV.
@daveschmarder-US19504 жыл бұрын
@@mwolrich If I had COMCAST, I would have Starlink in here as quick as possible. I have SPECTRUMonoply, so they are only half as bad. If that heater ran all year, I calculate that it would cost me $360 per year. Here in New York State, I expect the heater would be on for 3-4 months. I use about 200kWH per month presently.

No data caps at the moment, Josh doesn't have an Xbox so we were unable to test that. But if I get it I will!
@jjones25824 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a ping for gaming be the same ratio(?) as a ping for Google? Roughly. In other words if a landline can ping Google at 10ms and Xbox Live at 20ms then Starlink might ping Google at 40ms and Xbox Live at 50ms. The exact balance would depend on where the ground station is connected to a major backbone, but the latency difference should be roughly the same as a land line plus the space gap. That is my hypothesis anyway.

@joshseidman4 жыл бұрын
So far no problem, and weve had several inches to test it
@RogerDiotte4 жыл бұрын
And I can also add (myself in Northern Ontario) it's not an issue so far for me either. The dish heats up (built in heater) but just make sure that you DO NOT mount your dish with just that stand and have it THAT CLOSE to the ground (roof). You have to get that dish up in the air a little bit or over the eve of your roof to allow the water from melting snow (again the dish is heated) to drip off and fall or the icicles that form don't attach to the ground (roof) and form a solid that freezes the dish up.

I've been offered starlink, but considering the price, kinda sucks that they can't install the dish for you as well. If I put this in my front garden (won't be possible in the back yard) someone is either gonna steal it, kick it, kids gonna play with it ... so the only option for me is to mount it on the wall which I'll have to pay extra for .. on top of the £439 equipment cost. I'd like to get it just to play with, as I find networking extremely interesting.. but it's a very expensive beta test and the email even says there could be periods of no connectivity at all.
