A lot of these free ad supported services are getting better and better. Some don't have nearly as many ads as cable channels have. And they are getting more sophisticated and less glitchy.

You are and have been my favorite youtuber by far for years. I am a cable tv technician (12 plus years). I'm the guy who shows up to install it or fix it if there's an issue and i recommend these or over the air tv via antenna of some sort all the time. I love my job but the pricing is honestly outrageous. I suggest cord cutting ideas with my customers all the time, especially for those additional tv sets that arent used as often. You'd be amazed at how many people dont realize over the air tv still exists and is just the price of the antenna and set up time or that your tv provider probably has a streaming option on roku or other device to bypass paying for a box. This is a was a GREAT video. Thank you

If you watch a lot of sports you will have even more problems finding the teams you like to watch when you switch to streaming. Most services that have about as much content as cable start at $50. Since I gave up on sports I mainly watch movies so I get by with a couple of paid services I was already paying for and Philo which costs about $20/month.

Check out ShoutFactoryTV, too. They have tons of retro content including Reboot, every Mystery Science Theater 3000, and more. They've got a Roku channel app, or you can use their website. There's also an unofficial Roku channel app called Toonami Aftermath that replicates early 2000s Cartoon Network - great for revisiting Batman TAS and Justice League. It even runs vintage commercials between shows. His website has instructions on how to get it running on a Roku (takes about five minutes).

You should report what the 'ad load' is for these AVOD. Ad load is usually defined as how many ads they will run in a 60-minute period. If they start approaching the ad load on cable TV, then they are going to turn off their customer base. My biggest gripe(with Vudu) is you will see the same add over and over and over again. I guess it's because they just don't have a large inventory of ads.

You could always try using a VPN on your router, and seeing if they work that way, but if you use a Roku box, you do also need to provide a credit/debit card that way you can make on device purchases, and they can know you are over the age of 18 for legal reasons. My other advice if you want to use a ROKU outside of the US, just check the channel store in the free section, keep trying different apps to see what works, and what does not.
@AAWinnerMichaelCaine5 жыл бұрын

I'm shocked that you left out Vudu. Vudu is owned by Walmart and they offer loads of free content that rotates often. Always something good. All people need is a free Walmart account to sign in. You can easily create one on Walmart's website for free and then start streaming free content in their Vudu app. a few recent favorites I enjoyed watching on there was Demolition Man which is a favorite Stallone and Snipes movie, all of the matrix movies, Con Air. Same deal as services like Tubi but always at least a few things Worth re-watching or seeing for the first time. A couple other honorable mentions I would also include is popcornflix. I recently watched Chinatown and Beverly Hills cop 3 on that app. It can be hit-and-miss sometimes but they definitely have a lot of good content that pops up as well. FilmRise has lots of good old TV shows and movies as well.quality of selection can dip a little bit but they still have a lot of old favorites for anyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s.

Do you think we will ever get the local OTA channels free to watch on an app? We do get some of them to watch with a digital antenna, but things, such as the weather, or even the neighbors who live above us walking around, can cause the channels to go out. I'm guessing the cable companies still have some type of contract on those. I hope that changes.
@AAWinnerMichaelCaine5 жыл бұрын
I think eventually. Rural areas simply can't get OTA, at all. The only way to get those stations is through satellite or web streaming services. There's not much of a point to prioritize OTA broadcasts over setting up a stream anyone can access regardless of their distance from a broadcast source.

Tese apps are available world wide ?

The majority of these apps are USA/North American centric dues to licensing rights of the content, but you could always try using a VPN on your router, and seeing if they work that way.

I believe PlutoTV is the most international-friendly. I remember seeing UK and Latin channel variants when I sorted the guide on the account system (making an account allows you to customize your channel list).

I wish Pluto had an option for closed captioning. My girlfriend has trouble with her hearing and relies on this. They seem to have CC support on their mobile app, but not on the Amazon Fire TV, which is a bit odd. I've always gotten a strange error when launching it too, this has been there for over 3 years now. It's clearly not something they seem to care about fixing.

They do on their Roku, PS4, and Android apps (what I use it on). Also the website version does.

Right, which makes it all the more strange to not better support the Amazon Fire TV/Stick version. It has a larger user base than Roku. (34 million sold, to Roku's 27 million).
