ERRATA: I incorrectly stated the screen resolution, it is in fact 1800 * 1200 - nice high res display. Additionally the device comes loaded with Windows 10 S edition which limits what you can install. There is a process that you can follow to turn it into regular Windows for free which you can see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqOciZ9mnNJ3nqM

Lon.TV thats why I love your reviews. If something is a budget product, you should review the least expensive model, because the people looking to buy the product are on a budget and likely dont want to buy the more expensive version of the product, but barely have money for the basic one. I wish other reviewers would understand that. Anyways, great video and keep up the good work.

Yes! Very few reviewed the lower-end model which probably most people will get and why Surface Go got a more attractive price (not including the keyboard). Most just plainly dismissed the 4GB version which is not bad, most people will be fine with it. Even the EMMC storage is way faster than Hard Drive already, and many people still use those and they survive with their everyday task. This is why I love this review and this channel. No nonsense, more relevant to most people thinking to buy the product, and got all the information needed and some more. Pen review for example is mostly missed on other reviewers that Lon actually demonstrates. Surface Pen is one of the selling point of Surface devices.

Does anybody know if there is a cheaper 3rd party keyboard for it? 100$ for a keyboard is too much if the device itself costs 400$ IMHO.

Best review I've seen - very complete and unbiased. Unlike most, you actually showed the tablet being used rather than just stating a general conclusion! Great that you reviewed the base model and not just the high-end test unit that other reviewers got. Nice to see it tested it in various use-cases like gaming, emulation, Photoshop, etc. Well done!

Lon, I have watched virtually all the reviews online on the surface go and yours is one of the very best! What's more it's one of the very few about the 399 model, since you bought it yourself (MS only sent review units of the top end model). Your review confirms that this is a great secondary device, possibly the best secondary laptop for many people. I have stopped buying any tablet without a kickstand except my ipad mini 4 which is propped up by a brydge keyboard, so I mainly have surface devices and clones thereof now...

I bought the Surface Go and Dolphin emu doesn't work that well on it. Wave Race runs kinda good (it is really slow when it rains or when there are big effects in some races) but not Mario Kart DD (really frequent slowdown), Mario Sunshine or Zelda Wind Waker. I let the resolution at the native gamecube resolution (480p) and i've tried OpenGL, DX11, DX12, vsync on and off, nothing makes it really comfortable to play gamecube games. Besides that, it's a really fine product and I enjoy it, I didn't bought it for Gamecube emulator but I was curious of how it'll run.

If you can afford it and if 12" instead of 10" is good for you, go for the Surface Pro. The experience is not that bad on the Surface Go but it will be a lot better on a Surface Pro.

Great review and configuration choice. Would you consider doing a more frequent series of updates on your use of the device and impressions on long-term usability? There is considerable interest in this product and having the $399 version will get you lots of interest. Also, can you reconsider selling and not using the pen? I and others will keep the unit long-term as a replacement for our paper journals and as a new generation of iPads will soon be released, comparisons will be made. Pen/ stylus capable tablets have reinvigorated the tablet market segment that was slowing down and I'm surprised you are not using One Note and the pen-enabled features. Lon, a comment about the bezels. I don't think MS can remove the higher and lower ones, as there is the windows hello camera and the foldable keyboard... They could however remove the side bezels, but then this would change the aspect ratio to 16:9 or 16:10, which I would be happy with, since we would have more screen, not less... but I doubt this would work from a marketing point of view. Unless they go with what I suggested 4 years ago, virtual side bezels that would disappear in landscape mode... This would have the same result but could "sell" better as a special feature...

I think the "big bezels" is due to the Windows Hello camera system at the top. Since they had to make the bezel a bit thicker at the top for the camera, they probably made all the other bezels the same size just to keep it symmetrical.

Planning on getting this later today (I hope), I currently have a student discount which brings down the Surface Go (4gb ram + 64gb storage) with the black type cover to $479. Honestly not bad, was thinking of getting one of the other type covers but I want to save as much money as possible. Planning on using it for my online courses, light streaming and some light gaming. SD card expansion shouldn't be an issue since they go for pretty cheap (128GB micro SD card costs around $30 on Amazon). Nice review!

Great review as always, Lon! I had a surface 3 and found the performance and screen size were the biggest barriers to usage. I had the 2gb version so I assume this one will be ok for performance, but that 10-inch screen is no good for working at your desk. I found my neck hurting from looking down so much. I would personally have loved to see a 11.6/12.5" screen with less bloated bezels and larger battery.

It looks like a nice little tablet. I've been using a SurfacePro 3 for about 3.5 years. It's just the 12 inch, i5, 8GB model, but it has performed very well. It's a great little device to have with me when I am stuck somewhere for a couple of hours, like a car dealership waiting on servicing. The bezel on that SurfaceGo really is wide, it looks quite a bit wider than on my Surface 3.
@evancrazyerror
@evancrazyerror 6 жыл бұрын
Corgitronics it only looks wider because the screen is an inch smaller. Idk why Microsoft didn’t go with the 10.8 inch tablet form factor as that was the perfect sweet spot between a useable tablet and a comfortable laptop. Plus they could’ve used their backlog of surface 3s and recycle the same case. Instead of scaling down the bezels, they kept it the same which is why they look so bad. Imagine iPad bezels on an iPhone but not scaled down.

Great video Lon. I Have sold my Macbook Air and i'm looking to go back to Windows. I chose the Surface line coz it's made directly by Microsoft and i suppose updates will be a wee faster. I'm interested with the new Surface Go (8GB/128GB SSD) as it is compact and within my budget. But I have heard the performance and loading times is still a bit slow. and the included/bundles keyboard is soft to touch (not firm) and not backlit. I also heard The Windows 10 S that you can't install 3rd-party software. And if you opt-out of the S- mode can you still install Microsoft apps? The most i'll be doing is Word and Excel, watching KZbin and doing wireless printing. Advice please? Shall i go to the cheapest of the more powerful Surface Pro line?

Hi Lon. Do you think this product can be future proof? Like 5 or 6 years of use? If not what do you think is the maximum? And also, do you think 4gb ram is enough for student use? Long hours in Microsoft office (e.g. word or PowerPoint), web browsing like (5-6 tabs), playing KZbin on the background simultaneously? I'm torn between the 4 or 8gb ram and also the ssd vs emmc..but I'm also kind of tight in budget... buying the more expensive version will be fine but it would surely hurt my budget big time... sooo I really hope you will reply! If they made the screen even sightly larger, it would no longer be eligible for free Office mobile apps from the Windows Store. Only devices with screen size 10 inches and below get it free. If they reduced the bezel and kept the screen the same size, then the keyboard would be even smaller and more cramped to match the size. They need some of the bezel area for the Windows Hello cameras anyway. The current bezels and device size work out best.

Slippy Toad the Pentium Silver has mobile versions too. The Pentium Silver N5000 has the same 6w TDP as the Surface Go based Pentium Gold. The Lenovo Yoga 330-11 is fanless and uses a Pentium Silver N5000 and scores 284 points in Cinebench R15. That's higher than a 2017 i7 MacBook. In comparison the Surface GO scores 155 in Cinebench R15. That's a full 85% difference in favor of the Pentium Silver. In Geekbench the mobile Pentium silver is also nearly 50% than the Pentium Gold and scores over 5500 points. This is a massive difference in favor of the N5000, differences that you would absolutely notice. I don't understand why Microsoft decided to use Pentium Gold where they could have saved money and increased performance with a N5000 and SATA3 SSD. They could have saved money and increased performance considerably. The only thing people seem to complain about the surface is the performance which could have been avoided if Microsoft used a different chip. To add insult to injury, the Silver chip would have probably cost less...

I use Edge Browser on laptop so seldom mostly because the right side screen scroll bar is not as readily seen to access with my Logitech Trackball; Chrome and Firefox right side screen scroll bar is easily seen and therefore more accessible. I use iPad Pro for social apps and media consumption and use Chrome and Firefox on iPad, but Edge Browser is still not available for iPad, to my knowledge. I use Excel daily I have used Sheets and Numbers on iPad, but prefer Excel with a trackball. Hopefully Surface Go will be more pleasant to use for me.

For about half the price you can get an asus transformer mini. The ASUS Transformer Mini is more than a tablet! It's a full Windows 10 machine that comes with a keyboard and stylus. Same form factor, similar performance, keyboard and pen included. Less than $400.

Transformer mini is nowever near this one. Performance is half for CPU and even less than half for GPU. The screen has a lower resolution and worse aspect ratio… And Surfaco go is a full Window machine too, just many times better

Yes and there are many faster, better small computers available in the $600 range. I was just giving a cheaper alternative in the same form factor as an alternative option. Myself, I would consider the HP Chromebook x2 if I were going to spend $600, it is a chromebook ,but runs playstore apps and soon will be able to run Linux also.

And the 128gb model is EMMC, lower screen resolution, 4gb RAM... plus it's an Asus - I haven't had particularly good experiences with Asus and the Amazon reviews seem to reflect similarly iffy experiences that others are having. I currently have an OG Surface Pro that's nearing 5 years old and it still runs amazingly well.

Nice review. I'm not sure how 64gb of storage can work as it seems over time with windows updates and some installed apps and software 64gb quickly runs out of space? How much free space is there from the start before installing anything extra?

My kids had the 32gb HP kids laptop thing and it very quickly got the stage where even Windows couldn't download its own updates anymore! You also realise how many programs still insist on installing to the C drive (yes I know you can work around this, but its a pain) even when you have a big external drive available (or in their case, a 64gb SD card installed).

Not just you, many people on the surface reddit also agree that the Apple Pencil is better, even though we’re on the surface pen’s 3rd generation while Apple hasn’t made a new pencil since 2015.

@evancrazyerror

KOSAMA GAMES they had Wacom with the surface pro 1 and 2, but they dropped it for ntrig for the 3 to make it smaller. The battery is because the digitizer is in the pen not the screen, and the Bluetooth button does take some power. But ever since the surface pens haven’t been as good. Yes they aren’t plastic like the gen 1s, but at least you could draw a straight line with it.

Apple Pencil is better for drawing, Surface pen is (much) better for note taking /writing. I have both and the pencil feels like hard plastic on glass, the surface pen almost like a real pen (rubberized and with some friction)

I would really like to know with which software you want to edit on this thing. Except for Windows Movie Maker. Because even on my Ultrabook, granted it's from 2014 but so is my Software, Movie Studio back then from Sony now from Magix couldn't even load all it's plugins because my i7-4500U couldn't support any Graphics that were in some of the plugins. I am not sarcastic. I would seriously like to know if these things have gotten better. Because if I have to do stuff when I am away, and with me that always in the hospital, I just do it on the Ultrabook but it's really slow like you say but when I count out the fan, which rarely engages on mine but if this thing can do all that.. well I want to buy it indeed. So can you maybe try MovieStudio and let me know? You can download the Trialversion from Vegascreativesoftware.com I don't expect Vegas Pro to work on it but just Moviestudio to hold me over.

alittleolder get a real full fledged surface book, or an iPad Pro. iPad Pro has LumaFusion which pretty much is Final Cut Pro on an iPad. On a real surface book you can run adobe premier pretty decently. This little mini surface isn’t really for video editing sadly, but it is just $400. .it’s great for everyday minor stuff.

@@BlackapinoTheTechGuy WELL I've watched a ton of reviews, read a ton of reviews, and most suggest 6 or so hours with NORMAL use. I have a surface book 2 rated for 17 heavily-asterisked hours. I charge it up at night before i leave and using it at work for 8hrs...BUT..just so ya know...you don't need to move the slider all the way to the right just for better performance only....you can have a Balance which is probably why i get better battery life, because well...it's not meant to be a Media editior on ANY level..well..Light...and i do mean LIGHT video if you're doing 1080p and photoshop isn't too much of a system hog..but yeah.
