Many of the people who denigrate Harleys have probably never ridden one and are making comments based on stereotypes. Harleys actually handle well within there design limitations, a big and very heavy bike. I like to ride mine at a progress speed, which is around the open road road speed limit. At this speed it is engaging to ride and relatively safe. Better suspension makes a huge difference both ride comfort and handling, but that is the same for many makes and model of bikes. One of the best things about my Harley is the comfort, easy to ride several hundred kilometres then take a quick leg stretch and get back and do the same again. It just take takes a slightly different mind set because I need to leave a good margin for errors in corners, doesn't mean it is not fun.

I think you nailed what Harleys are about at 19 mins. They are a bike you have to ride, and because of that they are engaging at lower (legal) road speeds in a way that most bikes these days aren’t

I am not sure how to explain myself. I have always had British and Italian bikes. I tried a used Harley Street Glide with modified suspension. I ended up buying it. I can't explain what it is but I just love the bike. I've had it for 3 years. My other bikes have hardly been used. I have a custom paint job on it. Never had a bike garner so many compliments from young and old. Beside that I have toured so much on it all over USA. I came home two nights ago late from a trip, the engine sounds , the dash, the feel, no noise from a chain, it makes you so happy. I am an ex European. Never thought I would like Harley so much. Great review.

Really enjoyed that review, it's good to get an insight into the different motorcycles that are out there which may not be considered otherwise. A bit pricey and like others I think other motorcycles would come higher up on my list. When you mentioned what should be reviewed next, I thought what about those mid range bikes that are more within the affordable price bracket that we buy to commute and ride out on weekends as its the only bike we can afford and we want it to do a bit of everything, so I was thinking of something around 650cc. Maybe compare fuel economy, performance, touring capability etc.

I went from a superduke to a street glide special last year on the basis of being in my 50s and wanting to enjoy the trip more than the speed and the duke was way better than i was... I'm loving the Harley, i do like to hustle it along a bit for a laugh, managed to catch the floorboards a couple of times, but its a great way to get around and everyone looks at it, more so tham my ktm or previous ducatis. Guildford Harley are a decent bunch as well, may have to ask about retro fitting ohlins, sounds damn steep tho!

I think it was a Softail of some sort, big it was. Lovely bike to ride and the sound! Brrraaaaaahhh! lovely. It was a bit of a bummer when I had to ride my Buell home. Would it be my only bike? Probably not. (And I can't afford two bikes) Still, that is one really nice bike.

Great video Bruce. There’s normally a 12 volt socket on the inside of the batwing fairing on most Harley Touring bikes. Not sure if they have them on that new model hard to spot if you don’t know they are there. That compartment you plugged your usb lead in was originally designed to hold your phone behind the door when phones were a lot smaller. Mainly used now to plug in memory sticks to update the bikes Navigation and software etc. I reckon you would love that bike on roads in the Picos as the ride height is a lot higher on that particular model and you can get the old knee down further. Obviously not as a versatile as a GS but then again it’s not designed to be. Lot of Harley haters out there, most have never ridden one and those that have probably rode the wrong model to suit their needs as they all have completely different ride qualities. Interesting to see how the Pan America develops as it has had a lot of criticism about it looks but strangely they are selling fast and prior to the release of the Pan America I never saw a used GS in a Harley Showroom and now I have seen loads. Clearly a great first attempt on how it rides and handles and it’s very reasonably priced

Brilliant review Bruce. But us Harley riders do ride in the rain, and yes the USB is pants and gives in after a couple of wet hours in the saddle. I also was impressed with the ride of the ST, power and cornering were sublime. But… it’s ugly at the front, I could never have one just for that reason… Harley do though make a Road Glide version of the ST, and that if ever Lind get one in the demo fleet may be my next Harley!! What would I like to see you test? What about an classic loony bike of old like the Kawasaki H2 750?

Those front brakes are Brembo even though they are HD badged. I am not sure about the rears. The USB port works in the rain. I just made a tiny notch for the wire where the door closes and it worked perfect. I no longer keep my phone on the bars however. I keep it inside the compartment plugged in and all functions can be controlled by the bike via the hand controls, infotainment center, car play and bluetooth. I have the module on my bike to link my helmet (Sena) to the bike for voice control, calls, etc.

Cheers Phil, Totally different bikes for me. The Triumph has so much torque it’ll pull the sun out the sky, and it’s build quality just gives it an altogether more solid and well made feel. The Harley has loads of grunt but not in the same league. It’s more of a living, breathing thing with its vibey and clunky engine, but the Triumph wins it for me personally I think.

Another great informative review Bruce. The bike does look amazing I just wished they would of gone with the 131 cu inch to make it something extra special. As with your suspension analysis you are spot on when saying Harley stock suspension is poor. I swapped mine out years ago for progressive 944 heavy duty for touring 2 up. If you want a really old School Harley experience forget the millwalkee 8 engine and ride one with either the old Evo engine or the 88/96/103 or 110 twin cam. It’s a totally different riding experience. Your always welcome to take my road king out mate, it’s like nothing you would of ridden before 😂😂😂

Love my fat boy. Ride in all weathers , tour , play with mates. Yes they don’t corner like a sports bike , but they tour two up with camping gear for 14 days really comfortably. I have an RE for playing on the bends , not the fastest but very agile. Thanks for sharing this looks a lot of bike but then again a lot of money. How does it compare with the big Indians?

Bruce what’s the price of the Ohlins upgrade ? Bike is already dear and I thought the Sport Touring suspension upgrade was part of the increased RRP yet it’s superseded by Ohlins pair of rear dampers. Is front stock? Surely not….

I love the Harley bikes, but the company, not so much. Selling bikes at overprice, and calling them “customizable” or “a blank sheet” which really means having to spend even more to “unlock the potential” of the bike. If i pay a premium price for a premium bike i don’t want to have to swap out half the engine with stage kits. Seems silly to me

I've had close to twenty Harleys over the years. I've enjoyed them all and save for a Denso starter clutch failure I've never had to do more than basic maintenance and servicing. They're engaging, characterful, relaxing to ride and nice to look at. I was surprised at how many I saw at the TT this year. Mixed-in with groups of other bikes so perhaps more accepted these days. You'll always get the same tired old jokes but I just say to those guys that for their wives' sake I hope they've more imagination in bed... ;-)

The cruiser sitting position locks you in the seat. You'd want to change position after a while, but no can do. You'll look for a passenger pegs to put your feet on for a change. Not a bike-controlling position. Plus, every bump feels up your neck. Can't see it in a sporty fun ride in the twisties. But hay, this bike is for a take-it-easy-watch-the-nature-get-bored-and-stop-at-local-bar type of a ride. Otherwise ok.
