Ellie is suffering PTSD/loss of innocence from her experience with David. She is not distraught or distant in anticipation of ending her journey with Joel. If Ellie had any prior knowledge of the actual fate the Fireflies intended for her, it would completely defeat the setup and final ending of the entire story. The entire game and this entire show is all about leading up to the final words... Joel saying "I swear", and Ellie saying "Okay". And the genius/duality/discord/meaning/interpretation of what that means.

Neither Marlene nor Joel give Ellie a choice because both are afraid of what her answer will be. And Marlene did understand. She cared for Ellie. We see that even more in the second game during the flashback when she is talking to the doctor. I can't wait for Season 2 and 3. It'll be even better.

@Alice ellie made her choice, she would rather die to give a chance to humanity, that's what she wanted. Joel was just selfish cause deep down he knows that's what ellie wanted and that's why he lied to her. Like ellie said "I was supposed to die in that hospital and you took that from me"

Ellie: So time heals all wounds does it? Joel: It wasn’t time that did it….. 😭😭😭😭😭 I played this game 10 years ago and to this day it is one of the single greatest stories ever told. I remember debating with other gamers for over a year about if Joel made the right decision or not. The question of “You have a chance to save the world but the cost is that you lose the person you love the most in the world after already suffering that pain before”. The answer, the REAL answer, is that both Joel and Marlene made the wrong decision, because that decision should’ve been Ellie’s to make. In the Last Of Us (GAME) podcast Neil Druckman talks about how Joel and Marlene had no right to take that choice away from Ellie. She would’ve said yes, and then Joel would have no choice but to respect her wish. She wanted the deaths of all the people she had lost, Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, to mean something. Even if it cost her her life. And even though a small part of her knows in her heart that Joel was lying to her she feels that she can’t let herself believe that the only person she loves in the world took away her chance to save the world. Also I love that Ashley Johnson got to play Ellie’s mom Anna. It was a beautiful full circle moment that the woman who plays Ellie in the games played her mother in the show. Plus it shows how Ellie is just like her mother. And it sucks that even though we have to wait a couple more years for season 2, it will be worth the wait! Until then, Endure And Survive!

I knew a few tidbits from the first game, such as Sarah's death occurring on the night of the outbreak and that the story centred around Joel guiding Ellie across country and forming a father-daughter type bond along the way, I haven't actually played the games, however, so this series has been quite the journey. Ellie's birth scene was amazing... and tragic... and scary... and beautiful... and really interesting as the likely source of her immunity. What a devastating thing for Marlene though. They certainly were very different people, but like Joel, Marlene was someone hardened by this world. They also both made the same mistake at the end, taking the decision away from Ellie. I love that following the flashback they then opened up with Ellie's trauma and the change in her personality, hard as it was to see. It is realistic, though, as the experiences she has had over the previous months would undoubtedly damage a person. Especially a teenager, their hormone riddled bodies and brains being generally ill equipped to deal with their emotions as it is, haha..... we've all been there. Some of the conversations in this episode were so well crafted. The one where Joel tells Ellie they can still turn around, go live a quiet life back at Tommy's, and she responds that they have to go all the way with their mission perfectly foreshadows Joel's conflict later in the episode. He knows Ellie would probably choose to die for a shot at saving humanity, but he just can't stand to lose her. I also loved the conversation where Joel discusses trying to kill himself. It was the most honest and vulnerable Joel has been with her throughout. I think he realised she was needing that from him, but it was also something he simply wanted to give to her to show just how much she had come to mean to him. He was expressing to her that as dark and painful as it may get at times, you will find the light and the beauty again. You will find yourself again. That of course culminated in the moment where he indicates to Ellie that it was she that had healed him from the wound that was the loss of Sarah, she who had led him back to the light, the beauty, and to himself again - such a touching moment. Seeing Joel come from being this person who was extremely closed-off and bitter for 20yrs to this moment of open vulnerability and hope was such a great representation of that healing and how far their relationship had come. The sound design on the hospital rescue scene (where Joel rescues Ellie from the surgeon's knife) was amazing. The music was dominant, with the sounds of gunshots, spent shells pinging on the floor, and the occasional agonised scream heard underneath it. That, and the music itself, created a great deal of tension and left a sombre sense in the air. This was no moment of triumph or joy and I think we got that same sombre sense from Joel in the car afterwards. Sure he saved Ellie, but he again had to kill to do it and he also understands that he may have just resigned humanity to eventual extinction. You can see in that moment that he's hugely conflicted and he knows that he acted somewhat selfishly, but he so desperately wanted Ellie to have the chance at a full and decent life that Sarah never got. He also knows that Marlene was probably right when she said that Ellie would give her life for a cure. Afterall, that's why he lies to her, right? Because she would have chosen to sacrifice herself and would be pissed that he did what he did. Despite this, despite knowing that Ellie would probably choose the surgery, he still couldn't bring himself to let her go. Whilst we can all make the argument for why Joel should have acted for the greater good, I think we can all understand why he didn't also, so it's super hard to be highly critical of him. I think it's this that makes this ending such a compelling one. Ultimately, however, as I said above this should have been Ellie's decision to make and both Joel and Marlene took it from her. They should have fully informed her and then supported her in making her decision in her own time and free from pressure or coercion. Joel and Ellie's final conversation was again brilliantly crafted. In opening up about Riley I think Ellie was essentially saying to Joel, "Hey, this is my deepest, most painful secret and I'm about to be totally honest with you about it, so I expect you to be the same when I ask you about what happened back at the hospital." She obviously has her doubts about Joel's story, but I think she so desperately wants it to be true, so desperately wants to have not been betrayed by the one person she trusts and loves in this world, that she's willing herself to accept it. Deep down, however, I think there's a part of her that knows he's lying. Please, no spoilers, but I can't help thinking that Joel's lie is going to come back to bite him in the second game/season. Through all this trauma and adversity they've slowly built a loving relationship on a foundation of openness and trust. This fact was really highlighted by the conversations they shared throughout this episode, so I suspect that trust will be broken when Ellie learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and that she still might hold the potential for a cure. Though it pains me to say, I think this will likely be a major source of conflict between the two next season. Anyway, this first season has been great. The writing, the music, the casting, the directing, the cinematography, the acting, etc, etc, etc has all been top notch. Special mention of course for Bella and Pedro, they've carried this story brilliantly. Thanks for your reactions, let's do it all again come season two.

Marlene got what she deserved. If she wasn't so incompetent, she possibly would have had the cure and all of the Fireflies would have been fine. Her problem is that she let Joel live after he and Ellie were captured by Fireflies. Scenario 1 - Joel still considers Ellie "cargo" and doesn't give two shits about her: Marlene still didn't uphold her end of the deal - Joel was promised a fueled up truck, weapons and supplies for delivering Ellie. And all Marlene said was "I owe you". Yeah, right... Put yourself in the shoes of ruthless, heartless smuggler, that used to ambush and kill innocent people, that made a deal with Marlene and after you hold up your end, you get "I owe you"... what would you do ? Scenario 2 - Joel has bonded with Ellie and cares deeply about her. He has hear about countless other times when "cure" was a possibility and it never worked out. Now they say that to try this time they need to kill the person that you care about. So you get the same thing that happened here. Either way - Marlene has to keep trying to convince herself that she's "the good guy" and to do that she opposes suggestion to kill Joel. Same thing with Abby and her group when she let Ellie live after killing Joel. Both Abby and Marlene have deluded themselves into thinking that "I'll do this one bad thing for humanity or to get revenge, but I'm not a bad person". It's naive and childish. TLOU world doesn't have "good guys" and "bad guys" anymore- only people with agendas. And whoever has the most conviction is going to win. Which brings us back to Joel in the hospital - he was told that his 2nd daughter will die to "save humanity", but after 20 year of taking a good long look at what's left of "humanity" I think that Joel doesn't believe it's worth saving. He's seen the very worst of what humans are capable of and took part/did a lot of it himself. At the start of the show Tess tells Ellie that Joel and her aren't good people. That's the reason he has no problem in clearing almost entire hospital and has no moral qualms about doing it. He had an agenda - not letting his 2nd daughter die, and he killed anyone who got between him and achieving his goal. He didn't try to pretend that he's the "good guy" and he didn't try to justify the actions that he took to himself. He did try to spin the story for Ellie to try to achieve his goal - not losing her, but at no point he had any doubts or reservations about doing it. Joel is not the "good guy" and doesn't try to convince himself that he is.

The voice actress who plays Abbie in the game is one of the nurses at the hospital so if she gets cast to portray Abbie in season 2 then she was there and witnessed her father's death. Having her in the season one finale was likely just an Easter egg because season 2 was not even approved yet. But at least two more seasons have been approved. This could turn into more than a easter egg

There’s no “right” answer…..it’s all about perspective. That’s what makes the game and the show so great. That being said, even if the Fireflies did successfully make a vaccine, it’s too late to save the world because there’s no global infrastructure anymore. The only people that would get the vaccine would be other Fireflies or they’d use it to get people to join them. They would never give it to FEDRA members or any citizens in the QZ who supported them. The vaccine would just be another tool to help them win their war.

If another story presented a MC sacrificing everything, even his surrogate daughter, to save countless people, daughters, sons, fathers and mothers, we'd see him as a tragic paragon, a hero who's sacrifice must be honored and remembered. Joel had his Hero moment and he was found wanting. He did the wrong thing for very human reasons. He is not a good guy, in fact they told us such throughout the series. He's just also very human.

I mean I'd argue that someone's life isn't up to anyone else to sacrifice. A main character, or even a real person, agreeing to murder their own child for science, wouldn't be seen as a hero. They'd be seen as heartless, cold and deranged, and probably rightfully so as our survival instinct, and thus our instinct to procreate, is ingrained in our DNA. If Ellie had been given the chance to consent to the surgery, willingly giving her own life, SHE would've been seen as a hero. But as it stands, her life wasn't someone else's to sacrifice for her, and Marlene gave her less bodily autonomy than we grant corpses with viable organs.

The flashback to Ellie's mom and Marlene gives more context to the viewer how hard it was for Marlene to put Ellie to surgery, even if its a very decisive choice and takes away from Ellie making a decision to her own fate. I appreciated the direction the show runners went with for Joel's momentum through the hospital to Ellie; he's absolutely driven, cold-blooded and the mass killing here is meant to be horrifying as we watch it unfold as a passive audience. We see these actions more objectively from the outside looking in, which feels different than playing the game as Joel trying to reach the goal and avoid a game over. Killing is part of the gameplay loop and it's easy to become numb to dispatching people in the game, the show employs violence more sparingly and intentionally so it's more impactful when it does happen.

I think Marlene left Joel no choice but to kill everyone. Marlene just assumed Ellie would want them to cut her brain out. That is a huge assumption. How about ask her. Marlene saying she thinks Ellie would want to do what's right? Why is it right? It's right in Marlene eyes. Ellie didn't think she was gonna die. She said after she would follow him anywhere. Why in the world is the first thing they want to do is cut this kids brain out? No testing her blood first of anything? Marlene had no intention of finding out if Ellie would have a problem with any of this. The hospital was barley functional. They didn't even know if they had enough power to finish the surgery. So they have no idea if it would even work at all as a cure. What will they actually do with the vaccine if it works. Would they really give it to everyone? And how will they mass produce it. No way in the world a hour after getting to the hospital. And not telling her are they cutting her brain out.

Purely speculation on my part. I don't think Ellie's immunity came from Anna getting bitten during the birth. It's hinted in the first episode that amputation can save someone from a bite. It's literally shown that the location of a bite determines how long it takes to turn. My thought is, the cordyceps had reached the brain of its host, then Anna's knife was in that brain. Then that same knife cut the umbilical cord. When Anna got into the house, she called out "It's me" she clearly had expected someone to be there to meet her. When Marlene shines her flashlight on Anna, Anna is holding the knife to her own neck. If she felt it was happening, her intent was to kill herself to protect her daughter. Marlene saying they were delayed, makes it clear Anna expected Marlene and her team to already be there. If they had been, they would have dealt with the one infected trailing Anna. Marlene didn't want to kill Anna. She knew how much it was going to hurt to do it. She had to work up the strength, and the fastest way to the strength to pull the trigger is anger. I think part of why Ellie is in her own little world, and what Joel is worried about is more from what she went through with David, and to some degree just what she did to him. She was savage, and I'm not so sure when someone realizes they are capable of that, it's going to be an easy road to feeling "normal" I am not so sure Ellie would agree to the procedure if it were told to her honestly. Their doctor _thinks_ this is what made her immune. If this is correct, then there _may_ be chemical messengers to cause other cordyceps to not spread in the body. So there first response is "cut open the brain of the only source for these messenger chemicals and hope we can reproduce them in a lab." If the doctor is wrong about why she's immune, or if he can't reproduce the messenger chemicals, Ellie's still dead. I felt, Ellie wanted to give Joel a chance to tell the truth, but if he needs to lie to himself so eventually, maybe he can be at peace with it, she's not going to bring it up again. Can you imagine how much they would have had to butcher the story if they'd made this a 2-3 hour movie, though?

This moment really puts the perspective of Joel in question. Who is Joel to you? Joel: A smuggler, a murderer, a monster who single-handedly slaughtered the whole fireflies with no hesitation and takes away humanity’s chance of a cure. A murderer, as far as you are concerned, who kills the only man who can produce that said cure and takes it away. A monster who killed your loved ones. A monster, the last thing that many sees who unfortunately find themselves in its way. OR Joel: A man, a brother, a father who found something to fight for. A man who lost his first daughter when the outbreak started. A man who found a new purpose to push forward in life in the form of a teenage girl named Ellie, whom he starts to see as his new daughter. A man who is willing to protect and give a proper life to his new daughter. Whatever your answer is, consider the next question. Would your perspective change if you are in a different role/position under your given circumstances? Would your perspective change if you find yourself at the other end of his gun (Joel’s gun) or standing by his side?

Hey, Alyska! There are no other options! Neurosurgeons are a rarity in an apocalyptic world! The stakes are too big to risk Ellie saying 'no'. Joel sacrificed the lives of everyone in the hospital and everyone who dies of cordyceps from that day forward! Ellie had already decided before the hospital that she would see her mission through no matter what the cost and told Joel so. She said, "There's no halfway with this." Who wouldn't sacrifice themselves to save the world? It is her sole purpose for being. To deny fulfillment of this goal is to deny her destiny. Frankly, even if she didn't want to, she should be forced to. It's devil's arithmetic but how would you feel if a loved one could have been spared but for the refusal of the one who carried the cure? The big surprise at the end of the game is when you are forced to kill the entire medical team to advance the plot. The game doesn't move along until you slaughter them all. At that point, you realize that your POV character, Joel, is the villain who dooms the world for purely selfish reasons. Ellie knows he is lying to her but she accepts the lie out of love for her surrogate father because the truth of his monstrous, self-serving decision is too horrifying to acknowledge. The hero was the villain all along.

My only gripe with this show/season is that its too short, i dont mean that in a fanboy "Oh i want more, its the best show ever", i mean it as it really feels like a detriment to the story that Joel and Ellies personalities and relationship isnt explored enough to make it feel as meaningful as in the game. The show would have really heavily benefited from 12-13 episodes instead of just 9, so it could have endulged abit more in the interesting, charming and fun side conversations or explored characters like Henry and Sam or Tess abit more. Its off the beaten path that TLoU is at its best and even though they hit all the essential beats of the story, barely straying off the path made the show feel so much less than the game for me. It was really well made, had excellent sets and locations, great cast and acting, was faithful and respectful to source material and generally tried to please the fanbase. All my respects to this show but unfortunately it didnt hit quite as hard as the game did for me.

ngl I don’t know how I feel about them essentially explaining why Ellie is immune. Just cause of the implications. When it was seemingly just random it really emphasized how important Ellie is. As it is in the show theoretically you could try to recreate what happened to her, fucked as that would be

Tip: Stop checking an episode's runtime, or how much time is left. It prevents full immersion and engagement of the now. Your brain will be constantly pulled from what is currently happening to speculation of what is left.

The best stories you understand the villains motivations. The things that make the last of us such a great story whether it's the game that I've played countless times since 2013 or now the show you can understand his reasons and they are justified but in a lot of ways Joel is the bad guy. He's willing to sacrifice the rest of humanity to save his surrogate daughter even though it goes against what she herself would do. He's willing to sacrifice what she wants and what's best for the rest of humanity to avoid going through the pain of losing her. It is understandable but is Joel the hero or the villain? The good thing about the show and the game is it's up to you the consumer of the story to decide. Side note love your reactions and your accent lol

Joel is human. I don't think The Last of Us has any heroes or villains, and I think it's kinda what the story gets at. We're all heroes in our own stories, but at the end of the day there are no objective villains or heroes. Only humans.
@rockinrj87

@@alice45-fgd-456drt absolutely but it all comes down to perspective if you're a parent in this world and you find out somebody sacrificed a potential cure to save their child or their surrogate child over yours do you look at it as oh he's human he did the right thing or do you look at it as he decided his child is more important than mine? Make no mistake about it what Joel did at the end of the story in the first season was for completely selfish reasons however understandable That's why I said it's morally ambiguous like you said it's humans doing human things and look at the world around you humans can be both absolutely wonderful and pure evil look at David look at Kathleen and then we'll get what Joel did in the end. How far are you willing to go to survive? How far are you willing to go to protect somebody you love? Is one person worth more than the rest of the entire human population? These are the questions you're asked and if you ask 100 people you're going to get different answers from every person you ask that's the beauty of the story so you can definitely make the argument Joel is the bad guy

I am in hopes season 2 does not follow the game, just the time in-between games. Then the final season be the first half of Pt2 and the cliffhanger be, Well, I.Y.K.Y.K. Then the absolute last season be the 2nd half. That way, 1) we get more season, 2) Bella can age a bit more.
