Well how's this for an odd combination? I'm in my mid 30s. I experienced the NES Metroid and GB Metroid 2. But never got into them. Back in the mid 90s my family was rather poor, we didn’t have any game consoles, and couldn’t afford them. my first introduction to Nintendo games was playing the Original Metroid on NES at my Aunt Lisa’s house when we had family dinners. The memory has been with me for nearly two and a half decades. RIP Aunt Lisa, I’ll always think of you when I hear that “Samus appears” fanfare.

Metroid was the very first video game I ever beat. It was at a time when I was still in grade school, and my parents had just separated. Too much damage from enemies, not enough item pickups, obtuse requirements that mean a lot of backtracking (hope ya didn't go to Tourian with the Wave Beam!), and confusing LITERAL cut-and-paste environments (that map is too big for the cartridge so several rooms use the same layout but different sprite sheets). It's fun, but very flawed.

It is rough to start with but ultimately its still an enjoyable game. I enjoyed it quite a lot for an NES game. Love that feeling of being lost and letting the player figure things out. I drew my own map, which is basically mandatory and a forgotten 'feature' of old adventure games like Metroid and Zelda on NES. Had a few glaring issues that kinda ruined it, though. Namely: many rooms looking identical, bombing walls without direction, grinding for health/ammo, to name a few. Yet to play Zero Mission (luckily do own a copy) so curious if these issues are fixed

Got access to the orginal Metroid after finishing Metroid Zero Mission. Never finished it but I found the level design easy to navigate. The use of various colors & textures made it memorable for me.
