Nostalgia is inevitably a yearning for a past that never existed. And when I’m writing there are no bees to sting me out of my sentimentality. For me at least, fiction is the only way I can even begin to twist my lying memories into something true. OMG, that is such a writer thing to say.

Honestly, I hope they never make Looking for Alaska into a movie. I have such a perfect idea of it in my head that I don't want anything to ruin it. And sure, I could just not see the movie, but frankly, I'd feel pressured to if one came out. Maybe it should be a movie so other people can see it. I'm not sure. All I know is that I feel as drawn to that book as John feels drawn to his old high school; it provides a sense of nostalgia that nothing else does and nothing else ever could.
@AnnieKonni8 жыл бұрын
I agree with that! The way I incision the book is absolutely perfect and I don't want it to turn out like paper towns where I find that they cut out a lot of the scenes. but at the same time so much time has passed I'm curious to see what it wold look like now.

Elwood Nighthawk They might not be able to do that. Especially right now. I go to this school and they are remodeling it. Currently they're painting over it again, and yes we still have those octagonal tables. That and the swan. Plus if they were to film there they'd only have a few months to do it, and the smoking hole has graffiti in it. so yeah, there's that.

John Green, I shall day this one and only once, I hate you. But at the same time, I freaking love you. Why, you ask? "Looking For Alaska" is my answer, you gave me a book that I can completely relate to, the only problem is, is that I've read your book 3 times now, and I've cried all 3 times, sag pay is is that I don't normally cru in books or movies, I just seemed up getting that attached to you're characters. There are 2 major quotes that still stick in my head just because of their that artificiality in my mind. First one is: "I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane." This quote describes my life perfectly. And second is, "To be continued?" JOHN GREEN! WHY'D YOU HAVE TO GET OUR HOPES UP AND THEN JUST SHOVE US BACK DOWN THE STAIRS?!?! This quote, just UGH! It gives me nightmares now, due to the fact that this quote embodies disappointment, regret, love, hate, patience, etc... All in 3 little words. I'll never be able to look at those 3 words the same way because of you, and while I hate you for it, at the same time I love you for it. And that's how I shall conclude my rant. Sincerely, Your fellow nerd fighter, Stefan Wood

Damn, this was 12 years ago 🤯?! Time sure does fly . . . I was not subscribed at this time, but seeing these videos make me feel a certain nostalgia 🥰!

I remember watching this video and falling in love with John's words at the end; I actually quoted him in an English paper (A). This was around the time I discovered the vlogbrothers and Nerfighteria. And almost two years later here I am, a better person, no doubt, than I would have been otherwise. Thank you guys. DFTBA.

I screamed the entire time he was at the school because when you read a book or just have to image the setting to a place and you do your best, based on the details, and there's this part of you that is just dying to see it to 1. See if you were anywhere near what the actual setting looks like and; 2. Just see it and have it in your brain so you don't have to think about what it MAY look like anymore because you now know. Well that is how I felt about Culver Creek while reading LFA because I had a hard time imagining it in some places, especially when it came to the smoke pit, so to now see it makes me just SO HAPPY!

John Green, you wonderful man, I have such respect for you and the hours of joy you have brought to me. You, like the rest of us, are trapped within the labyrinth, but you, unlike me, lessen the suffering with almost every word, at least for a moment. So for that, I thank you. DFTBA.

Ah, the way you were walking around your old boarding school while it was absent of people and how you had two places that you needed to see, reminded me of the opening of A Separate Peace. And then being able to see the school you based Culver Creek on was truly amazing. Now I want to go reread Looking For Alaska....

Seeing the setting of this book that changed my life, I was a bit sad that the barn was not there, but was jump-up-and-down happy about seeing everything else!
