Just before this song, he sang one more light. And then he spoke about how he wrote this song a few days after Chester's death as a way to write down what he was going through in the wake of such a tragedy. So imo the emptiness from the first line is what he's feeling because he's missing Chester. He's wondering if there was something he could say or do differently so that things could turn out differently which is where the "looking for an answer" part refers to. There's also the line where he asks chester "is there sunshine where you are? The way there was when you were here". He's feeling lost and sad over what happened and just expressing it through is art. Kinda unrelated but another interesting thing you mentioned was about closure. His song over again from post traumatic(that I believe you reacted to but I could be wrong), he recorded it in two sessions, one before this show talking about how it feels all wrong to sing all these songs without chester being there and then the rest of the song about how he felt after this concert. He has a line near the end where he goes "and all I wanted was a little bit of closure, and every step I took I wasn't any closer"

Mike has never released this song and hasn't said if it's ever been finished. These were his feelings and thoughts after Chester's death. He's asking Chester if there's sunshine where he is now like there used to be when he was on earth. Mike is sitting in the dark. No sunshine now that Chester is gone. Yes, the pain in Mike is palpable with this song. You can tell he's just barely keeping it together. Mike's said that for the first few months after Chester's passing, he didn't leave his house. He felt lost and paralyzed. He was afraid he couldn't do music anymore. Finally, he was able to find his way back into his music studio at home and start to work on songs that eventually became Post-Traumatic. The light he was reaching for at the beginning of the song is the light that was Chester. At least that's the way I read the lyrics.

He said it's never going to be released, this is the only way to ever hear it. Good thing the crowd stayed absolutely silent.

He said before he played the song that he wrote it just like a week after Chester passed. So, this was a precursor to Post Traumatic. It’s interesting you thought Mike was writing from Chester’s POV. I always read it as Mike asking himself all the questions one would ask after losing a loved one to suicide. Either way, I’m continuously amazed he got through this without bursting into tears.

Mike was kind of in a funk for a while there. It was heartbreaking to witness. He had lost so much weight at the time. Even his face looked like someone else. He seems to be doing much better these days.

Along the whole concert you can see tears in their eyes, not just Mike but also Brad, Dave and at the end you can just catch the pain on their faces. Of course this is quite normal for they were brothers. For us fans Chester's death has been like a fall into the emptiness... Could never imagine what this has been for them. I couldn't watch the entire video, sorry. This is so emotional. It feels like yesterday.

You did it! It's heartbreaking and beautiful and always makes me cry. The whole song is basically Mike's feelings immediately after Chesters death, his inner monologue in those first weeks. Watching this video is so painful. It hurts to watch Mike hurting so badly.

1. I don't think that the first verse is from Chester's point of view. It's just Mike, explaining the shock and grief he felt. 2. You say you think it gave him closure... well, he wrote a song about this show, called over again, and said about it: "and all I wanted was a little bit of closure; and every step I took I looked, it wasn't any closer". So no, I don't think he got the closure he needed.

I dont think its from Chester's point of view. It's in the position of where Mike was and what it's like since Chester left us. Maybe even illustrating his "depression". I loved the benefit concert for Chester but it felt like the preparation and performances were rushed and forced. Some of the guests seemed like they weren't sure about parts of the music. Some of the guest artists seemed like they were performing the wrong song. The show picked up at the end with M. Shadows and Synester Gates playing Burn it Down and Faint. This song will tear your fucking heart out.

so many lp fans dont think mike has a good singing voice which i disagree whole heartedly, his voice sounds like something from another generation of singing.
