Indigo Gaming Exactly. TBH, I see Origin System as the most influential studio of all time. Don't forget that Looking Glass, Irrational, Ion Storm, Arkane Studios and several others were all formed by ex Origin employees. Looking Glass Studios also played its role in revolutionizing video games along with other Origin inspired studios. Thief 2 is pinnacle of Stealth genre.

Umair Khan Very true. I am planning on covering Ion Storm after my 3-part Looking Glass series. Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time.

Objectively speaking, both TDP and TMA share the pinnacle...Only personal preference would allow for one over the other.
@Indigo_Gaming8 жыл бұрын
Good point. It's hard to compare the original to an improved but un-revolutionary sequel. If you had to pick one for its effect on the industry alone, it would be The Dark Project, but there's a strong argument that Metal Age improved the game in many ways. I have the same debate on games like Mass Effect 1 and 2, Gears of War series, etc.

These games were seriously underrated, and Origin's demise can be directly pinned onto their lack of vision. The Underworld engine should have been used for all future Ultima games.

A little correction; Ultima Underworld did NOT have variable ceiling height. Any time you were close to the ceiling, you were at a high altitude.
@georgehenson24128 жыл бұрын
You did make it sound a little bit like there were only four people working on Ultima Underworld. Also you grazed a bit over Lerner Research, as Ned had been working with Paul since the Origin days. I know that most Looking Glass profiles tend to ignore their flight simulators, but they're an important legacy of the company that really did inform the design in games like System Shock. Still, a nice succinct overview of the company. I hadn't seen that UU release photo before so that was nice.
@Indigo_Gaming8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I can see how I insinuated that Underworld was made by four people although that wasn't at all my intention, I only named names for the original starting crew that worked on the CES prototype. Good point about the simulations too, since Ned came from the simulation genre, and later they hired physicist Seamus Blackley who worked on the physics of Flight Unlimited, it is a big factor of their games as well. I had to kind of pick my battles with this retrospective, so I focused on the games that the studio are most known for and the ones I had the most experience with. Thanks for watching!
@georgehenson24128 жыл бұрын
Indigo Gaming Thanks for replying. It's just a matter of principle that I'm a bit sad that *nobody* talks about Ned when talking about Looking Glass. I don't think it's Paul's fault of course, but I simply want there to be some more balanced views of the company out there since there are none at the moment. I'll be interviewing Ned Lerner sometime so hopefully his side of the story will become more well-known.
@Indigo_Gaming8 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is odd. I noticed a few mentions of Ned in interviews and he was clearly an important pillar of the company, he must just not get much of the spotlight due to him being less hands-on on the design of most of the games and being more of an executive part of the company, from what I've heard and read.
@phillippi24 жыл бұрын
5:40 Can someone give me an example of that? The devs have stated that the game did NOT have variable ceiling height. "Anytime you were near the ceiling, you were at a high altitude."
@Xegethra2 жыл бұрын
Ultima was great for RPG's and immersive sims alike. But another lesser known game I think was the first proper immersive sim, Terminator. Came out in 1990. It had no RPG in it, but lots of freedom, things to do and was at least a precursor to the immersive sim. If Looking Glass Studios didn't have the impact they had, then maybe someone else would have the recognition instead. Bethesda....yeah, Terminator was a Bethesda game.

The voice is too muted/bassy. I can listen to this so much better with voice enhancement plugins and using the qualiser ... please try to use a different audio profile for the narration? If I want to listen comfortably, I'll have to crank up the volume so much that the bass is gonna tear the walls of my house down ;).

@Indigo_Gaming8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Looking Glass Studios doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserved. Re: the bass, yeah, I have a very low voice so it looks like I need to put it through another Equalizer pass. The bass didn't seem quite as extreme on my other headset, but I can see what you mean now.

Your channel looks very promising and you earned a subscriber, but allow me to offer a technical remark - you should equalise the voice track and decrease the bass. Your voice is too boomy and makes it hard to make out the words (it makes my subwoofer kick in). Listen to ggmanlives, for instance.
@Indigo_Gaming8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! Yeah I've noticed on other speakers/headsets that is an issue. Others have commented it as well. I adjusted it for part 2 and may correct it more for part 3.
@totallynuts75954 жыл бұрын
Great Video, but the music is waaay too loud in comparison to your voice. The pitch of your voice doesn't help either, as it's in the low, low-mid spectrum of frequencies, the same as some of the instruments used in the music, which creates a cluttered sound.
@Indigo_Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Yeah this was my second serious scripted video, so I was still working things out. I can't replace the audio in the video here, so U would have to remaster the series and release it as a new package someday.
@totallynuts75954 жыл бұрын
@@Indigo_Gaming I figured out the video was old and while watching one of the newer ones I noticed the audio was better. I don't expect you to remaster this, tho it certainly would be nice to have an updated retrospective, with more information. I just hope that people who'll watch this series and produce their own content will also stumble upon this comment and avoid your mistake. Best of luck!

Thief is an okay game but that game is the reason the new Underworld game sucks so much fucking ass. I'd rather thief never have existed if it meant Underworld would be made terribly.
