So.... funny story. I actually did this. The Wastegate boost reference line exploded on my '95 turbo miata and I neglected to enable overboost protection. Needless to say, a stock miata 1.8L can't handle 30+PSI of boost. Bent 3 rods, broke one all to hell. I was a little bored and had a stick welder, so I made a plug from another block and welded it up. Found a huge crack on the other side and jb welded it shut. Here's an album on imgur of it: imgur.com/a/60Tnc Found an extra set of rods, a spare piston, ran a hone through the cylinder that got beat up a little bit by the broken conrod. Threw it all back together, turbo and all. Unfortunately.... I was in a bit of a rush assembling the motor because it was getting dark and I tightened but didn't torque down one of the rod cap nuts. Sadly it only ran for about an hour and I didn't get to go pwn any slow v8 cars with it. :(

An Atkinson cycle engine has a very high absolute compression ratio. It changes the timing so that it doesn’t use the full compression volume during the compression stroke. This allows it to utilize a high expansion stroke without the knock risk. Your nitrous basically acted like a turbo in a very high compression ratio engine. It probably ignited before top dead center and grenaded your block.

That was a violent "come from together" at low rpm (4K Ish...). Also wondering if the electric motors had enough time to react and cause more locking. I imagine a certain amount lead or lag is programmed into motor 1 and motor 2 for acceleration and deceleration. This is all speculation, i do no t approve this message.

Replace the 1.5 engine with the non-hybrid version, then get a turbo kit for that (they exist). Also, your engine was at redline, and MG1 was at redline; the NOS over-revved the engine suddenly, also it would have over-revved MG1. It wasn't TC cutting power, it was because the engine ran out of the rpm range og the hybrid drive
@MultiSandrosandro5 жыл бұрын
Power your car in ignition mode, fully depress gass pedal 2 times, then shift to neutral and again fully depress gas pedal 2 times. After that do the cycle again and BAM, TC is off. BTW be sure to have e-brake engaged.

Standard ring gap + super lean mixture = boom

Doesn't that melt pistons & burn rings? Not snap connecting rods in a quarter second. I think it was just as simple as rod failure.
@James_Hough5 жыл бұрын
T L I’m spitballin’ here, but when the ring gap isn’t opened up in a boosted or nitrous engine, and goes super lean, the heat expands the ring, the ring ends touch and seize the pistons in the bore. The momentum of the crank snaps con rods and causes them to ventilate the block.

On older cars I believe the traction control works by cutting ignition, essentially causing a misfire to cut power.

It could be a hydro lock. It was in a rain and humidity is high. Nitrous cool the intake air too much so that vapor condense into water and get into the cylinder. As the piston reach TDC it hits incompressible water and break the rod. The condensed water could be accumulating in the cylinder during several strokes to reach a significant volume.

I thought the freeze plugs were to prevent engine damage in the case of inadequate antifreeze coolant expanding in freezing weather
@davidsewell34775 жыл бұрын
It is you are correct. Freeze plugs pop out if the water freezes and expands . i commented on that myself. im shocked a mechanic didn't know that ... mmmmmmm
@earl42384 жыл бұрын
That is not their purpose. Wiz is right, they are party of the casting process. However, depending on orientation, temp and antifreeze content, they might, MIGHT, save a motor from cracking.
@K31TH3R4 жыл бұрын
Atkinson cycle holds the intake valves slightly open during the exhaust phase. This allowed nitrous to rapidly accumulate in the intake manifold and that 50 shot pretty quickly turns into a 100 shot, then a 150 shot, then a 200 shot, then an engine shot. Potentially you could trickle a wet shot on an intermittent switch. The power delivery would probably feel awful too and buck the car around until you get the timing right. And eventually you'd probably get a big nitrous back fire and blow up the plastic intake manifold. Every way you could make this work would not be worth it lol.

Stock powder metal rods would explode, but it might burn up all the oil first. Not Toyota's finest effort. The Prius has a 1NZ(?), I'm not aware of any use of a ZZ engine in the Prius.
@zeppelin77525 жыл бұрын
Prius experts, please correct me of this is wrong but: It sounded like the engine over revved badly when you hit the nitrous. My theory was that the massive increase in power overcame the prius's MGU that couples the engine to the wheels. Because the engine is not directly coupled to the wheels (parallel hybrid), the motor-generator was unable to hold the engine rpm down during the power surge causing to over-rev and blow up. Does that sound feasible?

Cannot compare a parts supplier(endless supply and can serve hundreds of customers in 8hrs) to a mechanic(10hrs day at most). Wizard could have 100,000 cars lined up wanting to do business and he still only has 10hrs available. Next step is hiring other mechanics. Either way it's very finite on the labor end. Even if it helps the Wizard's channel it's not a moneymaker just yet. Imagine the shop rate is $75 and Hoovie's rate is $45...on ANY car ever made. Impossible deal. They both know that the mechanic's labor cost is meaningless when most of Hoovie's videos are doing 5 figures in ad revenue.

I don't know if you know, but putting nitrous in an engine is basically putting much much more power into it, and if you have an engine that isn't strong enough to handle it, it blows. Engines that are strong can take this power stock. This is what makes the 2JZ so good, it has a cast iron engine block and aluminum head so you can slap on a lot a power and it will be strong enough to handle it. The Prius engine is not meant to take almost any more power. A lot of things can go wrong, like breaking the crankshaft in your case. I'm not an expert, but I knew it would not work in the first place. Though if you put a smaller dose in, it could've worked.

The Toyota prius uses a CVT for the gas engine, so the gas engine runs pretty much always at the same rpm, you can't really go full throttle at a reasonable speed on those engines so nitrous was injected at low rpm, causing the engine rpm to suddenly ramp up (nitrous has a similar effect as injecting pure oxygen in the intake), causing the ECU to considerably throttle down the engine which might have broken it. Can't really tell though, the prius is a pretty unusual car tbh
