Rewatching this video- buying my stihl 200 today. Since my carving start six months ago when buying a 180 cbe, I now have my 4×8 utility trailer, jawhorse and most all carving tools, a 4550 gen/inverter for power, my suv fixed up for travel and a plan to winter in South Carolina just carving. Ive chosen to live in a tent and my campsite has most everything one needs. Thanks to your videos getting me started, Im well on my way and will be 90% off the grid. Kids are grown and I can do as i please. This my retirement dream!!

Thanks Kyle 👍. Great detailed information. I had no idea about the different battery packs, the guys at the store failed to mention that little detail. Pretty sure I'm going with the MSA200. THANKS AGAIN!

You’re welcome! Glad I could help you out ! 👍🏻 The MSA 200 will be a nice saw . Just be sure to check those sizes on the bar for 1/4 pitch so you can swap out a dime tip bar when you want to . I will be making a video soon with my opinion on beginner gas saws and comparing the gas and battery saws I have .

Hi Kyle. Can you detail carve with bar and chain that comes with Stijl MSA 160. Dealer says Stihl doesn’t make dime tip bar for the saw.

Hi Kyle. Not having any luck getting part number for 12” dime tip carving bar .043 gage for MSA 160. Dealer and there distributors can’t come up with the number.

They changed the gauge 2023 on the 220cb (see through oil tank)I'm interested in very large bowl material removal,by means of stripeing the log in the shape of the three foot cavity,so as to rapidly chase out the 30cm depth with a massive gauge.i would love if you could do a comparison of this year's multy brand carving chainsaws ,with these small models for heavy duty removal

Kyle What is the advantage of putting an 8” cannon bar on the saw.
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie . I think it’s for better control when carving details. I have only used the 12” bars - stihl and canon. I like them because I have a farther reach when needed on some bigger carvings . I might need to order an 8” and try it out though

Just got the MSA140 and I have buyers remorse. Instead put a 043 gauge on a dewalt 20v saw, it runs circles around the Stihl. It has enough guts to run 3/8lp chain and use it to mill pine
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 9 ай бұрын
The 140 is just a little guy . Great for detail work but definitely not for milling . With current battery saw sizes the only battery saw I would even attempt to mill with is the Stihl MSA300 and even that’s a little small to be milling with . As far as Stihl to dewalt. I like carving with Stihl I can get the parts I need not sure about parts for dewalt.

Hey, this is a great video. I asked Jeff Mohr today which battery saw should I get. Looks like the 200 for me with a dime tip switch out. Thank you so much. Oh... I was hoping you might cover the battery backpack for a lighter carve. Any thoughts?

Really appreciate all the videos! I am looking into chainsaw carving as a hobby and who knows it could turn into something that pays for the hobby. Questions: Right now if you go to Stihl website, the 220 is on sale as a kit with Two AP 300 S batteries- plus charger for around $839.00. Do you know if the 220 will convert over to carving saw? Also, I will be having to go harvest my wood rounds and small logs. I am guessing I will need a gas power saw as well? Your thoughts? Thank you, Cheers!
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker Ай бұрын
I think that’s a good deal for the 220 set up . You can put a 1/4 pitch sprocket on that saw and run detail bars . Keep In mind the bars could burn out fast due to the saws power . My dime tip is on a msa200 . If you go that route I would recommend getting at least a ms250 or if you have the cash the msa300 is the battery equivalent to the 250 roughly

Hi Kyle, thought I would share my first experience trying to carve. I can't yet get my hands on the chainsaws you mention but definitely will try. In the meantime, tried using what I have which is a 9A corded saw with 14" bar. I paid to have the chain sharpened prior to using it for carving and put on all my safety gear. Got a newly cut maple tree log and tried cutting into it. Oh man, it did not at all slice like a hot knife through butter, it just kept bouncing off the wood and making wavy, jagged cuts. I gave up eventually. I can only think that my saw is not meant to cut thick, fresh wood. Do you think my conclusion is correct or is it some other problem in your opinion? Value your opinion, thanks.
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
Fresh wood is the easiest to carve as its softer than dry wood . With that said maple is a hard wood . I recommend carving pine , fir , spruce . If the saw is not cutting the chain could be on backwards. Also I have a couple videos out on how to sharpen your own saws. This is a great skill to have , will save you money and it’s easier than it looks !
@daisyl12
@daisyl12 2 жыл бұрын
@@KyleHallwoodworker Don't think the chain is on backwards as I never removed it and I assumed the fellow who sharpened it would have noticed. Maybe just not powerful enough for hard wood like maple as you say. I will definitely learn how to sharpen my own chains and will look up your videos on this before doing it. Discouraged by this first experience but will try again at some point, maybe when I have a better saw. Thanks.

It looks like the price for a MSA 160 + battery and charger is over $900. I liked this video very much, but that price really slowed me down. The saw itself isn’t unreasonably expensive, but the markup on the battery and charger is unreal.
