One does not simply explain Xanadu. ;) Honestly, Xanadu is an experience. This *seriously* needs to be the very next movie you watch. It is a wonderful musical, and, other than Gene Kelley (if you don't know who he is, he was a legendary film, dance, and singing star) being in the movie, I won't give you spoilers. Just watch, then watch this video again. It'll make you smile even harder.

Ah, Gene Kelly, and our dear sweet Olivia! 'Whenever You're Away From Me' is timeless. Just perfect. So strange sitting in a theater in 1980, watching an icon from our generation perform so credibly with an icon from my grandparents', in his style. Could she just do everything, or what? Even stranger now, searching in another window and watching a clip of that unforgettable scene that was set in his home, realizing it's been more years now since that was filmed, than the scene itself was from the sights and sounds it was recreating. And then a pang, as you realize they're both gone now -- the veteran actor and the lovely ingenue/pop star. 'I only have to close my eyes....'

The movie was panned at the time but became a cult classic mainly because of the superb soundtrack. It’s one hit after another and it’s unforgettable. The fashion and costuming also was spectacular in Xanadu and that also cemented it’s place in pop culture. The looks from clothing to make up and hair are undeniably brilliant and inspired and define the era. The storyline and acting (especially the leading man) leave a lot to be desired, but somehow Olivia transcends all of that to come out on top of it all and no one cares because she was so beautiful and brilliant and talented. It’s quite a testament to a performer to be able to survive and even conquer a poorly written film. As a young teen, I loved it immediately even when adults and others criticised it. I didn’t care because I found the whole experience so magical. That’s all I cared about.

Olivia has that angelic quality because she is an angel. Truly beautiful inside and out. Among the honors and highlights of my life is giving the Sinatra radio set I worked on to Olivia at her show in November 2017 at BergenPAC in Englewood, New Jersey. I never imagined that when I was a young boy in the early 80's hearing "Magic" while riding in our Lincoln, that one day I would not only get to work on Frank Sinatra, but give something of his I was part of to Olivia. I am rarely ever starstruck, but when Olivia walked on stage as the show began (singing "Magic"), I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing and had to absorb it, especially that I was up close by her in the second row with my girlfriend. That night was magic.

What a great start to Female Friday! You'll also love ELO's "I'm Alive" and "All Over the World" from this soundtrack. Hope you check out the movie as well. It's fun and cheesy and the music is awesome. I'm putting in another vote for Helen Reddy for a Female Friday. "I Am Woman" would be fantastic for FF, but "Angie Baby" is my favorite. It's got a wonderfully creepy story about a woman who is far more than she appears to be. "Candle on the Water" is another Helen Reddy song I love. It's from the original Pete's Dragon movie, which I also think you would enjoy. Love your reactions. You two ALWAYS make me smile! Happy Friday! 🎶❤

Jeff Lynne, from the Electric Light Orchestra, is such a brilliant songwriter and musician. This song, which he wrote for ONJ and the movie, shows the breadth of his talent.

I met Jeff Lynne in LA in the late 90s when he was with the travelling willburys at a bar called Delaneys in California Which he went to on his own frequently . I was and still am a massive fan of him and ELO . I was visiting from England. Omg such a down to earth nice guy . My mum didnt know who he was and asked him what he did, he modestly replied that he was in a band , she then asked him does he make a living from being in this band wtf lol 🤣🤣. Top man and a true gentleman what a genius .

This movie was my life in 1980. I must have dragged my mom to the theater about 12 times that summer to see this. I fully admit it's cheesy as heck and I still love it. And I WISH we had skate rinks that amazing in the 80's granted we were doing all the tricks at the rink cause rolling skating was a way of life in the early 80's.

The movie _Xanadu (1980)_ is a fun, fun romp! A musical, definitely on the airy side plot-wise, but not obnoxiously so, as some lighter fare can be, it's an enjoyable vehicle for one of the better pop soundtracks you're likely to experience. You'll fall in love with Olivia (if you're 1 of the 1 or 2 people who aren't already). Those songs will stick with you -- 43 years later and I'm still humming them!

The ELO performance and production in the record are so obvious it could be "ELO hire a precious new singer to the band". That's because it is so beautiful. Wonderful singer, wonderful band, and production. I love all about Olivia. Her voice, beauty, smile, performance on stage... everything!

It's a wonderful film featuring the music of E.L.O. Also the last film of Gene Kelly, legendary 1940's /50's screen dancer/actor, American In Paris etc. Wonderful! Also stars Michael Beck from The Warriors film, late 1970's I think.

I loved this movie as a kid and an adult I still enjoy it. The best part of the movie is the music and it acts as a sort of flash forward in styles of dancing/music. The weakest part of the movie was the male lead. I felt all the side characters and ONJ. All her sisters never speak but you still feel the connection.

The woman was an angel with an enchanting voice. She was a total class act. Never heard anything negative about her. She was such a sweetheart. Beautiful on the inside and outside. My first girl crush after seeing Grease at 6 years old. Then mom took me to see Xanadu. As a young boy she was the ultimate crush. I didn't know a single boy or older teenage boy who didn't have a crush on Olivia. She will truly be missed.
