Another good source of OLNs artistry is the movie "Xanadu". She portrayed a "muse". Best tracks were her together with ELO (The electric Light Orchestra). "Suddenly" is one of the best songs ever with "I'm Alive" a close second. Not to mention the title song "Xanadu".

There was only one track with an ONJ and ELO collaboration and that was the title track "Xanadu". When "Physical" was released some radio stations in Utah banned the song from being played. It mortified Olivia, who up to that time was pretty straight laced. That's why she did the video that emphasized exercising, instead of the sexual overtones of the lyrics. She needn't have worried, because this song went to number 1 on the charts and stayed there for 10 weeks. One of the top selling records of the '80s.

Thank you for this reaction!! I LOVE ONJ!! Her catalogue is very diverse. Barry Gibb has consistently called her the best female vocalist of her generation. She was very concerned about the content of this song and it was her idea to diffuse it by making a video about exercise. It was the video director that turned it into what you see here. ONJ said she wasn't there for most of that shoot. She has said before she wasn't necessarily trying to change her image but after Grease she was emboldened to try edgier music and really enjoyed that! You should check out her early hits which were country pop mostly. Being British-born and Australian-raised, the country music association lost their minds when she won the Grammy for country pop vocalist and CMA's (Country Music Association) Award for most promising country female vocalist in 1974 and some members rebelled to form a different country music association. That was short-lived though as Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton finally stepped up on ONJ's behalf. Her catalogue of music is great! I hope you explore more. Try A Little More Love, Magic, A Twist of Fate and her early hits Let Me Be There, Have You Never Been Mellow, I Honestly Love You, Please Mr. Please. Plus lots more!😀

I saw an article saying the same thing, Olivia's concern about the song, because she had such a goody goody, reputation that her fans admired. It was her idea to make the video about working out, hoping it would distract from the meaning of the song. Oh well, she tried! Pretty sure this did not change any fan's perception. She was still seen as the talented, good-girl, beautiful, sweetheart from down under!

I first laid eyes (and ears lol) on Olivia Newton-John way back in 1983 when I was 8 years old. My family had recently gotten cable t.v. installed (an exciting event, to be sure), and our package included HBO and Cinemax. Whilst perusing all of our new channels, I happened upon a film titled Xanadu. Released in 1982, Xanadu starred Michael Beck, Gene Kelly, and an actress by the name of Olivia Newton-John. I was instantly enamored by her beauty (to day the least), and then she began to sing...and I was absolutely in love lol Thus began my lifelong admiration, and adulation, for the golden haired muse with the voice of an angel. I rewatched Xanadu countless times, to the point where my mother still greatly dislikes even hearing the word Xanadu to this day. I own a concert dvd Olivia released in 2008 that has her band along with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing her greatest hits, and it is beautifully epic. Not only is she an amazingly talented singer, she is an extremely compassionate and sweet person with a heart of gold. I've been crushing on her for just shy of 40 years 😁❤

She was a singer first and an actress second. She really blew her sweet, "Country Girl Next Door" image with this song and some people threatened to boycott her. It was pretty amazing. The gym-themed video was supposed to diffuse the controversy, but it fell pretty short of doing that. One of her first big hits was "Have You Never Been Mellow" and put her on the map. As for John Travolta, he was an actor first and singer second. Check him out in the 70s sitcom "Welcome Back Kotter" or the original "Carrie" movie.

John Travolta is an actor who can sing, and Olivia Newton-John is a singer who can act. Olivia Newton-John had been a singing star for years before she starred in Grease in 1978. She had mostly done country pop songs, and she had an image as the squeaky-clean nice girl next door. After Grease she kind of went in a new direction, singing straight up pop songs, like "Physical", that had her trading in her squeaky clean image for a sexier public persona. If you want to hear the earlier Olivia Newton-John sound that first made her famous, try "I Honestly Love You".

British born, Aussie raised. Livie is a legend. She was a local singer here in Melbourne until she went national then international. You might not be aware but there was a fitness craze in the 80s to the point it started getting into fashion with peoole wearing leg warmers, tights and headbands as every day wear. So this song plays on that trend.

Olivia Newton-John is one of the best singers anywhere. The song you reacted to from the movie Grease was written for that movie and as a duet so that is why it is different from this one. She started her career off with slower like "If Not for You" "Let Me Be There" "If You Love Me (Let Me Know" "I Honestly Love YOU" and "Have You Never Been Mellow." Later she moved to a harder rock sound, of which "Physical" is a good example. Other songs from this era include "A Little More Love" "Deeper Than The Night" "Make a Move on Me" "Heart Attack" "Tied Up" "Twist of Fate" and "Livin' in Desperate Times." She also was in the movie Xanadu, which was a failure but the sound track is fantastic, split between Oliva's songs and songs from the Electric Light Orchestra. This is where her song "Magic" comes from as well as "Suspended in Time" and "Xanadu" the title track which is actually a song she performs with ELO.

Olivia had one of the clearest and sweetest voices - watch her in Grease with John Travolta - some people were a little shocked when she came out with this one. Good for her! And yes Travolta is a singer and a very good dancer. A lot of actors are what are called "triple threats" - acting, singing, and dancing. Watch "Saturday Night Fever" with John Travolta, tha best known disco era movie.

Olivia Newton-John has been making music since the mid-70s; when she started out as a Country singer. She even did a song with John Denver. After she did the movies Grease and Xanadu; she moved into 80's pop. She was one of the most popular Australian performers at the time. She started her own business and still works to this day.

John Travolta is an actor who sings. ("Gonna let her in" is the only single I can think of, and it is not very good) Olivia Newton John is a singer who acts. Great singer. She was fun in a couple Glee episodes. She played a parody of herself, and only liked Glee singers who did her songs. I hope you get into her earlier career. "Let Me Be There", Have You Never Been Mellow", "I Honestly Love You" and my personal favorite, a duet with John Denver called "Fly Away".

ONJ was huge in the 70s and 80s so yeah…because she could sing and had the “look”, she, like John Travolta often had movie and singles out during that time. For female Friday check out Shelia E, “The Glamorous Life”…she is considered one of the best female percussionists. Also if you like 80s pop check out Expose (pronounced x-po-sey)-in the 80s female groups were very common (the Bangles, the GoGos, Seduction, Expose, the Cover Girls, etc) so there are a ton of options out there…plus many went solo (Belinda Carlisle)

ONJ Is great! Xanadu, If You Love Me Let Me Know, Magic, Make A Move On Me, Let Me Be There, Have You Never Been Mellow Fun Fact to tell all your friends: Pretty much until after Grease (1978) ONJ was country! Back in the 70s a lot of country stars/purists like Porter Wagoner, June Carter Cash and, believe it or not, Dolly Parton were not on board with ONJ and criticized her. ONJ was deemed "not real country" by country traditionalists. The height of this controversy happened in 74, when ONJ won a Country Music Association Award for Female Vocalist of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance Female for "Let Me Be There", it angered a lot of peeps. ‘Cause ONJ isn’t American and wasn't considered country. A number of singers/musicians in Nashville protested the win! It wasn’t until people like Loretta Lynn that were like, ya'll ONJ being an outsider is a good thing 'cause our music will interest more people internationally but her being sort of popish and VERY popular was appealing to fans outside of country.... as a sorry, Dolly let ONJ record 'Jolene' and her sister Stella wrote a song to ONJ called Ode to Olivia.... and then Grease happened and ONJ started transitioning from country-contemporary to contemporary-rock and finally pop with a little known song called, PHYSICAL .... so there you have a fun little music history story

Olivia was born in England and her family moved to Australia when she was a toddler before she came to the United States after winning a singing contest in Australia. Believe it or not, her first hit singles were all country songs. She crossed over to pop in 1974 with her hit single, "I Honestly Love You." She was reluctant at first to star in "Grease," as not only was this going to be her first movie, but she didn't think at 31 years old, the public was going to buy her being a high school senior. It was her on and off-screen friendship and chemistry with John Travolta that made her shine. After that she had a few more big hits, including "A Little More Love" which reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1979. Though her next movie was a box office bomb, the roller-skating themed "Xanadu," the soundtrack was a huge hit with the title track and at the time, the biggest hit of her career, "Magic," which spent 4 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 Chart. She felt like she was being put into a box as this "squeaky clean" girl next door type, so she jumped at the opportunity to record this single. What makes this even more impressive (and Jay hit a bull's eye here) was several radio stations in the United States simply refused to play the song because of the overtly sexual lyrics, something that is not even heard of today. But because the Billboard Hot 100 Chart relies on both airplay and sales of the records, it spent at the time, a record tying 10 weeks at #1 between the end of 1981 and the beginning of 1982 (the other two songs that shared the feat at the time was "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone & "Cherry White And Apple Blossom" by Perez Prado & His Orchestra). Not only did song become the #1 hit of the year 1982, it was ranked as the #1 song of the entire 1980s!

Olivia started out singing in Australia, but did bot release her first album in the US till 1971. She started out singing Country, and won Country Singer of the year, for which many Country artists protested because she was Australian not American. She won many awards, had several number one hits, and several number one albums. Her early albums were the best. Beautiful music, beautiful voice. Great artist.
