John Travolta is an actor who can sing, and Olivia Newton-John is a singer who can act. Olivia Newton-John had been a singing star for years before she starred in Grease in 1978. She had mostly done country pop songs, and she had an image as the squeaky-clean nice girl next door. After Grease she kind of went in a new direction, singing straight up pop songs, like "Physical", that had her trading in her squeaky clean image for a sexier public persona. If you want to hear the earlier Olivia Newton-John sound that first made her famous, try "I Honestly Love You".

Thank you for this reaction!! I LOVE ONJ!! Her catalogue is very diverse. Barry Gibb has consistently called her the best female vocalist of her generation. She was very concerned about the content of this song and it was her idea to diffuse it by making a video about exercise. It was the video director that turned it into what you see here. ONJ said she wasn't there for most of that shoot. She has said before she wasn't necessarily trying to change her image but after Grease she was emboldened to try edgier music and really enjoyed that! You should check out her early hits which were country pop mostly. Being British-born and Australian-raised, the country music association lost their minds when she won the Grammy for country pop vocalist and CMA's (Country Music Association) Award for most promising country female vocalist in 1974 and some members rebelled to form a different country music association. That was short-lived though as Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton finally stepped up on ONJ's behalf. Her catalogue of music is great! I hope you explore more. Try A Little More Love, Magic, A Twist of Fate and her early hits Let Me Be There, Have You Never Been Mellow, I Honestly Love You, Please Mr. Please. Plus lots more!😀

I saw an article saying the same thing, Olivia's concern about the song, because she had such a goody goody, reputation that her fans admired. It was her idea to make the video about working out, hoping it would distract from the meaning of the song. Oh well, she tried! Pretty sure this did not change any fan's perception. She was still seen as the talented, good-girl, beautiful, sweetheart from down under!

She was a singer first and an actress second. She really blew her sweet, "Country Girl Next Door" image with this song and some people threatened to boycott her. It was pretty amazing. The gym-themed video was supposed to diffuse the controversy, but it fell pretty short of doing that. One of her first big hits was "Have You Never Been Mellow" and put her on the map. As for John Travolta, he was an actor first and singer second. Check him out in the 70s sitcom "Welcome Back Kotter" or the original "Carrie" movie.

I first laid eyes (and ears lol) on Olivia Newton-John way back in 1983 when I was 8 years old. My family had recently gotten cable t.v. installed (an exciting event, to be sure), and our package included HBO and Cinemax. Whilst perusing all of our new channels, I happened upon a film titled Xanadu. Released in 1982, Xanadu starred Michael Beck, Gene Kelly, and an actress by the name of Olivia Newton-John. I was instantly enamored by her beauty (to day the least), and then she began to sing...and I was absolutely in love lol Thus began my lifelong admiration, and adulation, for the golden haired muse with the voice of an angel. I rewatched Xanadu countless times, to the point where my mother still greatly dislikes even hearing the word Xanadu to this day. I own a concert dvd Olivia released in 2008 that has her band along with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing her greatest hits, and it is beautifully epic. Not only is she an amazingly talented singer, she is an extremely compassionate and sweet person with a heart of gold. I've been crushing on her for just shy of 40 years 😁❤

Olivia Newton-John is one of the best singers anywhere. The song you reacted to from the movie Grease was written for that movie and as a duet so that is why it is different from this one. She started her career off with slower like "If Not for You" "Let Me Be There" "If You Love Me (Let Me Know" "I Honestly Love YOU" and "Have You Never Been Mellow." Later she moved to a harder rock sound, of which "Physical" is a good example. Other songs from this era include "A Little More Love" "Deeper Than The Night" "Make a Move on Me" "Heart Attack" "Tied Up" "Twist of Fate" and "Livin' in Desperate Times." She also was in the movie Xanadu, which was a failure but the sound track is fantastic, split between Oliva's songs and songs from the Electric Light Orchestra. This is where her song "Magic" comes from as well as "Suspended in Time" and "Xanadu" the title track which is actually a song she performs with ELO.

Guys you’re amazing! Ms. Olivia is considered one of the most successful female artists of all time. So many hits and different genres. She had hits with pop, rock, country, r&b, dance, etc. she’s on her 3rd battle with cancer and she is an inspiration! My favorites are Magic, Soul kiss and many more. I was blessed to see her last tour before she announced her cancer came back. She was recognized as one of the most beautiful and sweetest women on Earth. Her catalog is very extensive. I believe she had 5 number #1 hits in the USA. She’s an Icon.

ONJ was huge in the 70s and 80s so yeah…because she could sing and had the “look”, she, like John Travolta often had movie and singles out during that time. For female Friday check out Shelia E, “The Glamorous Life”…she is considered one of the best female percussionists. Also if you like 80s pop check out Expose (pronounced x-po-sey)-in the 80s female groups were very common (the Bangles, the GoGos, Seduction, Expose, the Cover Girls, etc) so there are a ton of options out there…plus many went solo (Belinda Carlisle)

Olivia Newton John is now 73. She started her singing career with Country music in the early 70's before she graduated to acting with "Grease". It was released on June 16, 1978. An enjoyable country song by her is " Country Girl" released in 1973.

The woman was an angel with an enchanting voice. She was a total class act. Never heard anything negative about her. She was such a sweetheart. Beautiful on the inside and outside. My first girl crush after seeing Grease at 6 years old. Then mom took me to see Xanadu. As a young boy she was the ultimate crush. I didn't know a single boy or older teenage boy who didn't have a crush on Olivia. She will truly be missed.

John Travolta is an actor who sings. ("Gonna let her in" is the only single I can think of, and it is not very good) Olivia Newton John is a singer who acts. Great singer. She was fun in a couple Glee episodes. She played a parody of herself, and only liked Glee singers who did her songs. I hope you get into her earlier career. "Let Me Be There", Have You Never Been Mellow", "I Honestly Love You" and my personal favorite, a duet with John Denver called "Fly Away".

"Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil is a song you should react to. she's kinda become the definition of a "one hit wonder" because of this song but it's just so good you need to check it out

Oh how I love Olivia Newton-John not only does she have a voice of an angel she's absolutely gorgeous. I was 15 when this video came out & I HAD to get my haircut just like Olivia's in the video & I did just that the very next day. She is a really big deal & I love her earlier songs in the 70's as well like I said she has a voice of an angel.

"I Know There's Something Going On" 🎶 Female Friday Suggestion 🎶 Anni-Fred is the brown haired woman in the group Abba. In the 80's she went solo for an album but she went under the name "Frida". The song is so cool & was a huge hit!

Not to mention Phil Collins played drums on that song, and also produced it!

I also loved Olivia's singing on the song "Xanadu" as well. She was a very big name back in the 70's. I have one of her greatest hits albums.

When Olivia first made the scene she had an innocent, squeaky-clean, goody-two-shoes image. Grease and "Physical" were meant to change that to give her a wider fan base.

Well, she mentions horizontally in the first section so…

You’d think the line where she sings “let’s get horizontally” would’ve been a clue. 😆

This song always reminds me of Muscles, by Diana Ross (which I just read was written by Michael Jackson).

I recently went down the OLIVIA rabbit hole. It's amazing how many songs she had just in the 70's! She was huge BEFORE Grease and Xanadu and "Physical." As a kid she was always on the radio. It's sad how time can forget some artists or in her case the first part of her (Country) music career.
