Dae Jang-geum 大長今 was the first female royal physician (uinyeo 의녀) documented in Korean history. She lived during the reign of King Jungjong (중종, 中宗 1488-1544) of the Joseon dynasty 조선 朝鮮. She is mentioned 10 times in the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty 조선왕조실록. This in itself is unusual because she is not of royal birth. This video will be about the historical Dae Jang-geum mentionned in these records and not about the mostly fictional TV series of the same name (Jewel in the Palace in English).
What transpires from the historical records, is that King Jungjong was pleased with Jang-geum's medical knowledge and the king trusted her in taking care of him and his family.
First, I will elaborate on the times in which Jang-geum and Jungjong lived. Jungjong became king after his half-brother, Yeonsangun 연산군, 燕山君, was deposed by a group of literati (scholars). Political factions (Sarim 사림 & Hungu 훈구) were strong and made ruling the country rather difficult. Nonetheless, Junjong carried out reforms with the help of Jo Gwang-jo 조광조, 趙光祖 (1482-1520), who would become a very important figure in Joseon’s history. I will discuss Jo Gwang-jo’s attempt at reforms as well as his tragic end.
Then, I will mention all the entries about Dae Jang-geum found in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. We will learn how medical treatment was provided in the royal court and what information was deemed important enough to record for posterity.
Finally, I’ll try to connect the historical Jang-geum to the fictional Jang-geum from the TV series.

Dae Jang Geum was the first Kdrama series I ever watched. Dae Jang Geum fascinated me and I wanted to know more about the historical figure. Also, food as medicine made so much sense and I closely watched the food prepared in the drama.

I just realized in this video that the Kdrama "Queen for Seven Days" was about the first queen of King Jungjong. And true enough, the producers of Jewel In The Palace did a great job in storytelling on the few records of Jang Geum.

Jewel in the palace was my first k-drama that I purely stumbled on by accident. Since then, I've been obsessed with kdramas for the last almost 20 years. I've countless dramas, but Jewel in the Palace will always be my favourite. It was the hook that pulled me in.

I’m wondering if any historians are looking into her and at least forming their theories cuz with what little information we have on her, there’s nothing to suggest she had been a court lady but that means there’s nothing to suggest that she wasn’t

I dont know what you think about historians of korea, but yes they of course formed some theories about her and more. 😅 The problem is that there's very little information about her. Output of combining of both reliable and unreliable information, and some fantasy is the drama 'Daejangguem'. It feels weird to see people say something about Korean historians. And all they've seen is one or more videos.

Once again you made a great video....I came across alot of vids regarding Jewel in the Palace. Reading up on her and seeing your video now. Its great to see how this woman even though mention Joson dynasty made her mark. I also want to point out about Jungjong and Jo Gwang-jo......I cannot blame them for putting effort in trying to fix and repair all the damage Yeonsangun has done.....

Thanks for watching!! Yes, Yeonsangun’s reign was quite a disaster… and Jungjong has to try his best in this case. Jo Gwang-jo had the ideas and wisdom but too many at court were not on his side to say the least

I remember there's an episode when the queen mother was agitated because she wants jang geum to be concubine of her son after rumors spread the king visited jang geum on clinic, the king was confused by this but also glad because he likes jang geum. If she became king's wife she can no longer practice medicine. Knowing the joseon society was strict especially on women I wonder if jang geum was allowed to be the king's physician and also one of his woman in the palace.

I have great news. There will be a sequel fo Dae Jang Geum, which is called "Uniyeo Dae Jang Geum"- "Female Physician Great Jang Geum." I am filled with emotions. I am so excited and teary. It probably won't be as big or good as the original, but I remain eager and optimistic.

Hello, I just wanted to point out that the painting of the man in the middle at 0:28, 1:33, 2:58 looks almost exactly like the painting of a Ming Dynasty government official. I'm curious as to why the traditional outfits are so similar to Chinese traditional outfits.

I do hope the fans know, at this time droughts, and periods of starvation were occurring. The peasants resorted to eating dog meat to cure this ailment. It was started by a peasant merchant and his farmer wife. They were Mr. Yi and his North Manchuria wife, Misses. Jang. Drinking the broth was said to enable a human to withstand the humidity and heat.
