the only scene worth to watch in the 2005 Constantine is when John flips the devil. The rest is bullshit to appease the audience that likes the morality good-evil and believes in heaven-hell. Even the 2014 TV show and the DC animated movie Justice League Dark (2017) couldn't translate to the screen the character from Hellblazer comics, because people (huge, huge majority) have absolutely no idea what is a sorcerer or the concept of anti-hero. The problem is that some stories are not for mainstream, people struggle even to assimilate Marvel's Iron Man and Spiderman, just look how many movies they had to make till 2018 to bring Thanos and infinity war to screen, the million dollar market campaign, and much probably (hope i'm wrong) the movies won't stand a candle next to the original. The potential to make big money copying books and comics is great , but at the cost of stupifying the source material.

I only had two issues with Constantine. 1. the director cut all but 2 seconds of Michelle Monaghan out of the movie, and 2. the character Isobel Dodson (Rachel Weisz) is a devout Catholic but tells John, "I don't believe in the Devil..". That doesn't make any sense. BTW, Peter Stomare makes a fantastic Satan, "I do miss the old names..".

As a person who'd never read the books, I had no expectations going in. It's a solid movie on its own, and has fantastic design, effects, and acting. But I can totally understand why fans of the actual comic were pissed--he wasn't blonde, wasn't old, wasn't bi, wasn't blonde, wasn't British, and wasn't in London, all rather vital elements of the backdrop. When a buddy looked at me and said, "Could you picture Jeremy Irons?", it clicked what kind of a vibe he was expecting.

ROOTSCONTRA -"After the fall of civilization nobody would care for the fucking King James Bible, " - innittially speaking yes they wouldn't. But after a little time and times get really desperate, people turn to religion in flocks. Throughout human history we have seen this trend. You just have no idea about humanity. "Just christian bullshit propaganda" - Not really. There is nothing that is saying that it is the true religion or anything like that. Just that a man wants it because he knows full well it can help him control the people with it. "because it wouldnt help you at all. Everyone would prefer a book about gardening or natural medicine" - Bahahahahaha. Doesn't fucken work if all the natural medicine is dead and the ground is saturated in radiation that it's very difficult to guarden. You'd have to get creative and a simple gardening book won't really help you there. Like I said you just couldn't enjoy the movie because you fail to grasp human nature.

In a horrific event like world destruction one would resolve to religion for comfort. Felt more like a post apocalyptic movie to me, like mad max. Guess Mel Gibson was in that and passion of the christ and what not so thats propaganda I guess. Anyhow I enjoyed the movies.

Some were pissed because it wasn’t a carbon copy of the comic book. Some were pissed because it contained elements of religion and/or morality (especially the critics since they usually look down on movies that present religion in a positive light). Opinions are like assholes. Unfortunately, there is a large group of people out there that enjoy rubbing theirs in every one else’s faces.
@KatRo138346 жыл бұрын
I understand the hate, but I don't agree with it. There's really a lot they changed about his personality and also the storyline they based the movie on. 1. They don't explain that Balthazar actually put Constantine on the road to his way of thinking as a child. 2. Constantine actually ends his curse by tricking 3 rival kings of hell into keeping him alive which is far more interesting than redeeming himself with God. 3. He's blonde, British, and Chas is an adult with a wife and kids that gets dragged into everything because of an obligation. There's a lot more but realistically you can't expect a perfect adaptation for such a long, convoluted comic book series. The only thing that really put me off was Rachel Weisse and her horrible accent, her need to sound extra husky all the time, and just how annoying her character is. She hunts him down because of his expertise in the occult but then she doesn't believe anything he says when he finally opens up. C'mon now...

I don't think it was necessarily pushing Christianity. It was more about the power of faith in general. It didn't matter if it was real or not, Eli believed it to be real and it gave him steadfast resolve and seemingly supernatural abilities. Carnegie wanted to twist that power of faith to control and rule over the people. Notice at the end the Bible is added to a library, just one of many books that include the Quran, Torah, etc.

Thank Y'all for including "the Hunted" (one of my all time favorite movies) The writers/producers did an excellent job in merging what you see/what's really going on..becoming a movie more about perception..and it works both ways. Most people see Del Toro as a PTSD ridden Phsycopath seeing everyone as a threat trying to "sweep" him because of what he has Saw/Done for the Gov't as a Black Ops assassin..but in truth , everyone he kills IS trying to Kill him....and His Former Teacher KNOWS this. Hollywood doesn't like movies that make you use your Head... As a Retired Extreme Survival Instructor, I loved the Survival , Trackin skills used( yes it was over the top but at least the skills were based on some truth) an as a Hard Use Knife Designer, I especially loved that the film is a "minimalistic" , up close& personal Knife Users Movie.. also thanks for including "the Knowing " and " the book of Eli" ... 2 more EXCELLENT movies😉 Conclusion, 2 middle fingers up for "hOllyWoOD" 2 thumbs up and 1 Hell yea for Looper 💯🎸🖤🤠

It was an amazing movie and literally every complaint I've heard (it was too dark, it reinvented classic heros that people felt shouldnt be altered, it was a cross over of different heros) are things that everyone loved about Marvel movies! It was a great movie with good acting, good special effects, a serious tone, and an interesting plot. I've always felt like it was a 9/10 movie that should be rated alongside or above most Marvel and DC movies.

He did one for Citizen Kane too (at least I remember that one). As for Ebert championing movies: I agree he had his unique voice. I loved "knowing". It is one of the very few sci-fis where the protagonist neither accepts and believes everything happening around him is destined or magical blatantly, nor does he ignores and denies the facts and science behind those happenings. He is calm and he collects evidence to understand whats going on and then he finally presents them to his colleague once he is sure enough. Like a true scientist would do. Not many directors portray a scientist like this.

In what world? Hollywood, that’s where. Remember, Hollywood accounting can make any result look like a loser, even if it’s the highest-grossing picture of all time! That’s how Mario Puzo got nothing from “The Godfather”, he signed for a piece of the “net” instead of the “gross”, and he got bupkis. Same thing happened in “Forest Gump”. On the books, the studio made no money from it.
@djtoona4 жыл бұрын
@@FastEddy1959 Nice summary. Please also be aware that the “budget” or “production cost” does NOT include “promotion” and “advertising” costs, which can be enormous. For a film with an average-sized budget, the promotion and advertising costs are typically half that of the production (so a film with a “budget” of $100 million can have a net cost of $150 million). In some cases, the promotion and advertising budget can actually EXCEED the “budget” or “production cost”

The Thing 1982 could have made this list, it didn’t do too well when it came out but has since become regarded as a great horror film. I tend to remember when the critics get it wrong the other way - highly praising a movie, which when turns out to be not so good when audiences actually go to see it. That is what made me cynical about critic ratings.
@ancientscars4 жыл бұрын
@rockn roll The critter scenes in The Thing are universally praised as ground breaking. The film also had an honest budget for the time and they didn't have to rush filming as they had plenty of time. A lot og CGI and practical effects even today look shoddy in comparison. I recommend watching the behind the scenes and listening to the commentary track by Carpenter and Russel. They provide great insight into the making of a classic.
@michaeld25193 жыл бұрын
@rockn roll Which 'The Thing' are you referring to - it cannot be the 1982 version! 'Alien scenes'? There were no 'alien scenes' - 'The Thing' took on the appearance of its host - albeit in grotesque fashion. 'More quality'? You are joking, right? 1982's 'The Thing's effects are fantastic beyond belief - universally acknowledged as such. 'Less silly'? The effects are neither silly nor the premise of the movie - it is one of unrelenting foreboding and dread.

In that, he basically sells his soul to the three rulers of Hell-Satan has apparently fucked off-and when they show up to collect, they realize he has to stay alive, else Hell will be torn apart in civil war to claim Constantine's soul. So they heal him-I think, been a while-of his cancer, and right before they go back to hell, JC flips all 3 of them off.

There's something overtly, or covertly spiritual about all of Denzel Washington's movies. Even the ones where you might at first not see it. He's a devote Christian. I love him in every role he's ever played, plus he's a great human.
@arthas6404 жыл бұрын
I always felt it was the religious angle at the end that pissed off critics, they tend to have a pretty anti religious bias imo. If the film makers had swapped the Bible for Merriam-Webster or something like that I feel they would have rated it much higher. It had good suspense, a nice plot, great action, good pacing, and the dark washed out colors worked since it was a post nuclear desert.

@hotatinity6 жыл бұрын
Koba Maybe my wording wasn't the best. The "change" I was trying to say was that it was limited to a single perspective. While the book (and the original movie) focuses on the main ordinary man, it also provides enough information from the military's perspective, so that we understand exactly what was going on in larger scale. And it does a great job comparing the difference between these perspectives. In the newer film, we are given the same limited knowledge the main guy gets. I wouldn't say one approach is better than the other, since I really liked the book and both of the movies.

WHOA there buddy. You got "The Hunted" completely wrong. Del Toro didn't randomly killed 'deer hunters'. Those were CIA assassins dressed like deer hunters in order to kill him. Del Toro's character was trying to survive multiple assassination attempts and Tommy Lee' Jone's character actually created the whole mess by ignoring Hallam's calls for help. The Hunted was a STUPID movie because the entire premise could have been avoided if our so called 'hero' didn't act like a jerk.
@sandbakk776 жыл бұрын
Might want to add First Blood to that list of movies with a stupid premise. If Rambo hadn't gone back into town, everything would be fine. If the sheriff hadn't insisted on treating him like a criminal, but rather tried to help him, everyone would have been fine. Even when Rambo escaped, all he wanted was to be left alone. So if the sheriff had let him go, no one would have gotten hurt. Of course, the book is quite different in that regards, but I'm talking about the movie. Same goes for Cujo, for that matter. The movie is awesome, but in order for the story to be possible, we need a car breaking down outside the mechanic's house when there's no one there, a woman cheating on her husband, another woman winning the lottery and going on vacation, a mechanic getting killed, one guy going on a business trip, a dog getting rabies and so on and on. ALL of that had to happen all at once, or there wouldn't have been an issue at all.

Many people watch Starship Troopers incorrectly. Consider that the society is basically a fascist dictatorship. How do you keep people from focusing on problems at home? Have (or invent) an enemy to fight. Some "other' to blame for all your problems. Watch again through this lens. All we ever see is bugs defending themselves against an onslaught. We only believe that the asteroid is sent by the bugs (to destroy Buenos Ares) because that's what we are told. Where did you see where the bugs were interplanetary travelers? Did you ever see any technology that would allow them to launch an asteroid on a collision course with earth? The soldiers never question any of this. Also, the film is criticized because the young pretty actors are basically cannon fodder. But that is the whole point. The fascist regime isn't interested in winning the war. It could care less whether its soldiers are under-equipped. War as status-quo is the goal.
