Totally unbelievable how the land was nothing but trees at one point and then with the invention of tall buildings and asphalt roads all of the trees disappeared and a concrete and steel jungle took their place.

I’m not a liberal but manhattan could have been one of the finest nature reserves in the country had it remained its natural, astonishing old ecosystem with the small Dutch town. It’s terrible to see wonderful environments that were designed by God be ruined by human race but that is our nature, but the city now is just as good in its urban form without mosquito swamps and immense density of woods. I may be overthinking it, but hell, they overthought it too so.

There's more reserves, mountains, streams and forests in the world then you can imagine... It's nice to see some places a concrete jungle.

And if the population of NYC was as densely populated as Phoenix, it would destroy so much more natural land

The tip of Manhattan wasn't entirely just barren wilderness. There were several villages in the area, the one on the tip of the island being Kapsee village. They northern Leni-Lenape people there also practiced fishing and agriculture, so there may have also been a lot of small farms, trails and oyster shell middens in the region.

I want to see more of this... I also like the idea of showing where the landmarks are like with Washington square Park Arch.

The journals of the earliest settlers described arriving in a paradise of abundant game and water. After 2-1/2 months at sea, they knew they were nearing landfall because 30-miles out they could sense a change. They could smell the vegetation and the trees of an unspoiled wilderness largely untouched since the end of the last Ice Age.

Where were the Lenape natives? I know for a fact that they used to spend the summers on what is today Staten Island because there was practically an endless supply of mussels and other shell fish just off the beaches there.

I can't believe the Dutch sold their "New Amsterdam" to the US. What an amazing port that would've been for international trade these days!

The Dutch actually gave up New Amsterdam to the English under the threat of conflict in 1664 when the English took over New Netherlands as a whole.

I believe there was an abundance of flowers and colors. Moreover, there were so many flowers that their fragrance could be smelled from a ship in the middle of the Hudson River, according to the book, Gotham. The first men to arrive said they had never witnessed such natural beauty. When they reached the vicinity of present-day Gutenberg, N.J., Indians began to shoot arrows. They also mentioned the thousands of bird species. Soon they would disappear to avoid starvation.

I always chuckle at those who say "We bought it for only $24?" Yeah, that's how much it was worth on those days. Only later when the white man brought in Broadway, Wall Street and the NY Yankees etc did it get any value.

Even in this time the Hudson River was extremely dirty.. when Henry Hudson sailed up it, he had a hard time finding fresh water and had to go to a stream in New Jersey

Actually no, the land the Twin Towers were built on didn't exist back then. The island of Manhattan was widened a few times, and WTC site is actually on landfill that was poured between 1800 and 1965. But back in the time this video depicts, the WTC site is very much underwater.
