Love what you're doing here. Just a comment on that Launchpad thing you linked to though - he's not actually controlling music with it - in fact I think he's just synchronising his fingers to a preprogrammed light show.

100% agreement with losing the dialogs. Most of my complaints about the iOS UI is where Apple makes me scroll around a tiny dialog on my big iPad screen. e.g. The AirPlay selector. (Also, the proliferation of dialog boxes over my objections in the product I work on is one of a few reasons I now started do less UI work at my job.) The recording part I’m unsure about. That’s the part of the current Loopy that confuses me the most. But I’m not convinced the direction you were taking with Masterpiece edition would have been any less confusing. Maybe more. (i.e. I don’t have useful feedback about that right now.) The eye candy: One of the things I struggle with in music is that my brain works slower than most people. The time-based nature of music performance means that I can get stressed pretty easily. Also, performance environments are often very dim or very bright and have other challenges. Combine these things, and it means that the UI for my music gear needs to be as uncluttered and high-contrast and clear as possible. I certainly appreciate eye candy, but it needs to be careful not to get in the way of the UI’s primary purpose. And (though this may go without saying—I’m going to say it anyway) no matter how carefully considered, there needs to be a way to disable it.
