We have a 2 yo lab mix rescue and this technique worked like a charm. After only a day or 2 of reversing, he "got it" and walks have been great. At first it was a LOT of back and forth over short distances but it really didn't take long for him to understand that if he wanted to go somewhere he needed to stop pulling. I think Victoria's methods are very common sense and helpful. I also think a good 20 minutes of fetch before a walk helps too...

Yes!! We don't use any of those horrible chains or collars don't worry, we love our dog, we don't want to torture her!! I'd rather be embarrassed for a little while than hurt her. She has done very well this past two weeks, a lot of improvement. My partner and I have discussed how to both use the same methods and keep it consistent, however today we had a bit of a problem with another dog, our dog went mental at it, barking and lunging for the poor thing. But, we still remain positive for her.

Totally. I was watching alot of it and using the technics on my dog. It was hard though cos I found it kinda hard to "bite" the dog. The I found these videos - first of all, this works alot better and the dog is also ALOT happier - and so am I, cos instead it being stressful to train, it is fun

Thank you :') He had lung cancer. When I say "baby", he wasn't really a baby (he was 13) - but he was my baby. Cockers are very sooky, they're like toddlers and my pet name for him was Baby. He had a good life but it is still so hard to let go. I hope you have many, many happy years with your pup, they are very precious.

Oh, and since it's worse with other dogs around, you may want to do some focus exercises with him around other dogs. Start at a distance where he doesn't react or pull, and then give him the cue to look at you. "Watch Me" is what I say. As soon as he makes eye contact with you, give him the treat or reward he loves best. Gradually increase how close you are to other dogs with this. This exercise should help you have him focus on you more on walks. :)

This will give you more control as you use the methods that Victoria uses in the videos. You can also try some clicker or marker training as you walk him. If your dog responds better to food, then use food. Keep some food treats he loves in your hand, take a few steps, and if you walks with you say "Yes" and give him the treat. It can be slow going and I do sympathize. My mom has a very large pit bull that she didn't train as a puppy who pulls very badly. If you have any questions please ask.

Hi, I'm not a professional dog trainer, but I do help out family and friends using positive methods. Sometimes with dogs that are big and pull like a freight train, it is best to use a no pull harness or a Gentle Leader. These are both tools that Victoria uses sometimes, and they will not harm your dog. What they do is when the dog pulls it kind of pulls them to the side a bit, so they can't get their momentum and body weight into pulling you.

A hyper boxer MUST exercise before you try any type of training...of course the dog is gonna pull if it has so much energy in him!Try some hardcore exercise first and then go for a work.Make him chase a ball,run beside you on the bike,rollerblading etc. these kind of stuff will help you with the pulling!Thats why you should choose a dog breed carefully,to match your lifestyle.

Sorry, that is not an English Cocker in the video, it is an English Springer Spaniel. They are similar to an English cocker, they were at one time the same breed. The English Springer is larger than the English Cocker.

Standing still works better for the runners. Some dogs will keep going at any sign of forward motion. It might take a while but she will eventually stop and turn to look at you like "WTH?". That's your moment to IMMEDIATELY step forward. Her reward for not putting tension on the leash is forward motion. Works well with the crazy running dogs.

Victoria, I have used only your training method with my three year old dog that I adopted from a rescue a little over a year ago, with 100% success. I have a question regarding this video. While watching it, I was surprised to see you using a regular collar, vs. a harness. When is it ok to use a collar in place of a harness? Is this one of those situations? I use a harness as he still has a lack of impulse control when a rabbit or squirrel runs in front of us. Keep up the great work!

As for what equipment to use. Get yourself a long leash like what Victoria has in this video and a martingale collar (its the collar the dogs wearing in this video). Never use stretchy leads, harnesses, flat collars, prong collars or choke chains.

Yes we have tried his style too, we felt it is more of a fear-inducing method though compared to Victorias, she seems to work with more patience and love. I think Cesar is cool and the things he achieves are amazing but sometimes maybe the style of it is not as respectful as we'd like. I don't know what to try next, maybe we should give Cesar another chance..? Hmm

I like the theory of this, but this is in a huge backyard with nothing in sight; most people don't have that luxury outdoors. I want to see the same thing working at a dog park or something. How long until you get a dog THAT good? My dog is almost 3 and while she for the most part will heel off leash at a dog park I have to remind here every 5 seconds or she's off sniffing something. Meanwhile I feel like an idiot since everyone else is letting their dog run around and I'm trying to train her...

I've got a staffie x terrier and he's really bad on leash - at the moment I've got a chock chain, but I don't want to use that, and it's not working anyway, cos he still pulls hard on it and I think he'll damage his neck one of these days, I want to get him a harness. Anyway, the turning around stuff doesn't work with him, he just keeps pulling, and never focuses on me because hes too interested in everything else around him. Also, he's very agressive with bigger dogs - any tips?

Don't get a harness. Harness's make dogs pull more, they're what sled dogs wear. If hes pulling you just try the turn around like whats shown here or you can just completely stop walking. When your dog realises that you've stopped and comes back to you praise him and continue walking. And repeat this until he gets it. As for the aggression. Take him away from the situation until hes calmed down and then reintroduce him. Keep doing this until hes calm. When hes calm, praise and treat.

i have a rescue border collie and when i try to go for walks with him we have no choice but to walk on paths where there are lots of cars and when one drives past he attempts to chase after it. he doesn't listen and refuses to focus on me when i try to get his attention but he is absolutely great at home. we go to a local dog park but its only practical to go there once a week and our yard isn't very big what else can i do to make him walk better and focus outdoors?

loose leash walking is the hardest thing to teach my GSP... she knows how to sit, lay down, shake my hand, waits in place, heels, goes to her bed when I point at it, and even closes the door..... She is still horrible when trying to do a normal walk without trying to pull off my arm. I have used some of the tips here and by other people, but she still wants to pull.... No, please! As you said, Positive Reinforcement is based on mutual respect and making the relationship you have with your dog better and better. Please just be patient. As you see in these videos, one of Victoria's personal dogs is a lab. Stay away from choke chains and prong collars, but a head collar/halter/gentle leader or no-pull sporn harness could help you a lot. Give one a try and stick to positive methods. If you are still struggling, Victoria's forum on her website is great for advice!

The check chain is probably not used correctly or fitted correctly. There's a technique to using it. It doesn't correct the dog automatically. You can use the same technique Victoria did and just walk straight in the other direction rather than waiting for the dog to turn around and catch up. For the aggression I'd suggest you find a reputable trainer. It's not really something that can be solved in KZbin comments.

More exercise and he needs a job. You have an active herding breed who's trying to do what he was bred to do by herding the cars. Can you get a backpack for him? Are you familiar with clicker/marker training? You'll need to wear him out mentally as well as physically.

"has her work cut out for her"? No, she doesn't. Anybody could train this eager to please dog to walk on a leash in about 5 minutes. You don't have to yank the leash but letting the dog feel the consequences of not paying attention when you turn by letting them run into the collar is fair and effective.

I have a stubborn, independent cattle dog, it took like 2 months of this method but now he has it. I also used a head halter in the beginning too to make my life easier. Some dogs are just more of a pain in the ass but I agree. Those retreiver/spaniel/shepherd people dont know how good they have it.

First of all you should exercise your dog properly(idk if u do)so it doesnt have too much energy when u wanna go for a walk!Maybe you should try running with him/her first for 15-20 mins(depending on ur dogs energy lvl)then try to work on not pulling.You can change direction each time your dog pulls.It will be boring but it will work eventually! Also praise him/her when he/she does good! With food,toys whatever motivates your dog really.

This doesn't work on every dog. And the dog in the video is already mostly trained. There is no 'enticing' a dog with body language to follow you if all it wants to do is run around exploring. Don't get me wrong, this is how I trained one of my dogs. For her it worked easily, but for a high energy dog that cares more about playing than pleasing it's owner, this does nothing. You have to give the dog something it wants as reward. Most of the time, food works.
