I hear that. Wishes for a speedy recovery from the USA !!! Also, if I may....."Don't powerslide in a business suit and wingtips !!" Real quick:, late for work, car died, grabbed skate from trunk to get home and call cab. Powerslide in front of house, pitched forward & SNAP, 4 drill bits, 3 nails, 2 plates & a traction bar for 16 weeks on my left wrist. HAHA, joke was on me. Worst injury in decades of extreme vert skating. I bombed same hill while injured, then hung t up & stuck with surfing. bone vs concrete, you lose. bone vs water, you still lose just not as bad. Hang in there Jamie !!

@GhoulishBunny yeah dude, fix that sh*t in a hurry. Setting up a beginner with loose trucks has to be some kind of sick joke. You're already using muscles you didn't know you had, just to balance on your board. Don't make it ten times harder than it needs to be. Tighten those things up, and as you get more comfortable start backing them off like a quarter turn at a time until you find the sweet spot. You'll know when you've gone too far.

I loved this. I started skating in 1973, clay wheels, open bearings, & flat decks. The tools are much different now. But to give you an old educated opinion, it depends on 3 things: your build, what you skate, & your style. And maybe how soft/hard your wheels are. I don't see a lot of what we considered style among current skaters. Current riders all have loose & narrow trucks & skate mostly flat ground, so when they do tricks they tend to be kind of jerky in their movements. You would have gotten laughed at back in the day for riding like that. My build is short, thick, and explosive power, so my style was very aggressive, grinds, powerslides, & stalls. Remember the ollie didn't exist, much less kickflips, etc. I also skated halfpipe/vert, etc. since we got arrested for skating in the street back then, so I kept my trucks very tight. It was more stable in the ramps/ditches & I could use my strength to slide or stall to control my speed if I needed to. The other style was the way I surfed: loose & carving. Those guys wanted looser trucks so they could carve easier, or if they were tall & thin. But that made it too hard for me when skating a ditch/ramp to really stick the landing & control the board. We always carried skate keys, so If I was going to risk it and bomb a hill or garage, I would loosen them some. I also used softer wheels for everything but ramps. Hard wheels gave me more speed in the pipe, so I didn't have to compress as hard, and the soft wheels gave me a smoother ride on surfaces not as smooth as wood. Softer the wheel, the more grip, so it was harder to powerslide to adjust speed on hills. So then I had to loosen thee trucks some. Most people now that I talk to don't know what kind of wheels they have We usually assembled our own boards & I frequently changed wheels, decks, & bushings because of how hard I skated, terrain changes, to save $, & over time. I wore many wheels out, bushings, & broke a bunch of decks (even 2 kingpins. That really sucked, RAW BEEF.) AND ALWAYS KEEP YOUR BEARINGS !!!!! The longer you ride them, the faster they will get. I loved the video, I hope you all can get some assistance out of my knowledge & experiences. I love watching kids skate, and they seem to like my suggestions when offered. Remember, there are no rules in skateboarding. And your style is YOURS, borrow from those you wish to emulate but ride the way you are comfortable !!! Having fun is all that matters.

that '73 setup sounds fun to try. i agree 100% with you, i am very new to skating but i keep buying parts to find the right mix of wheels, deck, truck tightness, etc. thats the beauty of skating isnt it? the evolution over time and the personal style? richie jackson is my favorite skater for that reason... hes not doing crazy tre flips or anything, hes doing creative firecrackers and using props from his environment. i love it !

HERES A TIP: I personally skate with tight trucks because it’s easier to stay on the board after a trick. With loose trucks I’ve found it’s harder to stick the landing because the board turns and you lose balance. For new skaters learning flip tricks I recommend using tight trucks. But for new skaters learning to ride and get comfortable with your board I recommend loose trucks for a more natural feel.

It comes down to so many factors that this debate is meaningless. It's like a chicken or the egg debate. The factors involved are as such but not limited to: ability level, personal preference/comfort, weight, height, body type, center of gravity, style of skating, size of your wheels, whether you use risers or not, how fast you skate, and the obstacles you prefer to skate. I adjust according to what I'm going to skate that day; but I usually skate rails, ledges, gaps, stairs. I'm 6' 2 1/2", 195lbs, size 12 shoe, athletic/muscular/runner build. Here's the stuff I do, with the logic behind it: Tech/flatground/manny pad=looser trucks, 50 to 54mm wheels; no risers cause there's no fear of wheel bite, chillin'. sippin' a slushie and 360 flip into a nose manny. boom. netflix and skate; hippie status. mini ramp & transition skating=medium tightness, 52mm and up wheels, sometimes risers depending on the size of the ramps and tricks I want to do. Probably go to Applebees with my atomic family afterward and look at my investment funds that evening and be in bed by 930. gaps/rails/ledges=tighter trucks, a minimum of 54mm wheels, risers to avoid wheel bite. Energy drinks, rare steak, 4loco, binge watch an entire season of a tv show in one evening on netflix with someone else's account and password. Keep in mind, loose/medium/tight are arbitrary terms, i.e., only relevant to each individual. One person who's say 90 lbs and 4' 10" would find my medium tight trucks immobile, and their medium trucks would be extremely loose to me. It's like shoe styles and sizes; I can't wear kid shoes, and a kid shouldn't try to wear adult sizes. So for me, loose trucks are those if I lean the wheels can touch the board easily. Medium would be if I lean I have about a half inch of clearance from the board. Tight would be that when I lean the wheels have about an inch of clearance from the board at full weight, and only move about 1/4 an inch when turning. I adjust and I like to be a well rounded skater. Here's the simple reasoning and explanation of everything. Skateboards used for tech/flatground/manuals (loose) are like low rider cars; they're stylish, flashy, chill and cool. They are made for the street, flat ground, and perfect weather conditions. Speed bumps are their worst enemy, and they can lose control at faster speeds. mini ramp/transition skating (medium) need to be well rounded and adaptable to a wide variety of conditions. These are like your crossover style vehicles (Jeep, Ford Escape or a Subaru.) gaps/rails/ledge type skateboards (tight trucks) are like high octane racing/specialized sport vehicles. They aren't for everything or everyone, but specific types of terrain, like an F1 car or even a stunt vehicle. It simply comes down to choice/preference in the end. :)

Or you could just find that right tightness or bushings that allow you to skate everything without messing with your trucks. As for the chicken and the egg debate, it's easy, the chicken came 1st for sure. You need a chicken to lay an egg, I know you can say "well you need an egg to make a chicken...not necessarily, where did all the other animals come from that dont lay eggs? They just showed up, so it's safe to assume it's the same for chickens. Unless the question refers to when did those little dinosaurs evolve into chickens, then I guess it could be the egg came 1st lol.

not all transition riders use tight trucks, you pretty much need loose trucks for bowl riding because you pump sideways. I think something that makes loose trucks more stylish is that tic tacing generally always looks terrible. Pinched out grinds look cool and a few speed wobbles also amplify the illusion of speed.

I love you bro, I've watched almost all your videos, I've been here since John started referring people here. I think the criticism on these comparison experiment videos is that they don't seem to be well thought out in design, and they really need to be. You are a pretty big channel and you are tackling big subjects and making big claims. It's a real critique, it's nothing to get mad at people for.

used to ride tight F+R trucks all the time... started to use a super tight rear truck and a semi loose front truck , its pretty sweet how it can turn easily but also be stable for tricks. try it brah

this actually pissed me off a little your really think I get loose trucks because it is cool. This is all untrue i really like these guys but this was wrong as a vert skater you want them loose to carve instead of being a stiff noodle.. tight trucks are easier to land flip and flat ground tricks. sorry but don't give an opinion when you guys clearly never skate vert.i normally love the vids tho keep it up mate

yes. i watch all of their videos and ive seen them get vertical(not like tony hawk tho). but if you skate loose trucks because its comfortable and works for you, thats what matters. some people skate loose because they genuinely prefer it, and some people are into the trendy side of it. thats just how skateboard culture is. they werent saying everyone who skates loose is trendy.

stop being a whiny bitch, okay so he was wrong, get over it. He's not talking about you, hes talking about how pretty much every skater now rides loose trucks. Its trendy, when you see people who can barely stand on their board because their trucks are too loose.

Hm. I'm surprised at the proposed logic. I'm under the impression that transition skating prefers loose trucks, since there's a lot more turning involved. Tight trucks for flip tricks. I rock mine as loose as possible until they start to wobble, then tighten them a half turn or so, just so they *don't fall off*. And as the video progresses, it seems you come to similar conclusion. And since you asked to be made fun of, nice snail trail hat, Dale!
@willowsparks4576

actually a lot of bowl skaters ride very loose trucks like Nora Vasconcellos because it means you can carve with as little effort as possible so you dont lean too far and then fall off your board

This makes me feel so much better, I just got a nice setup after like 15 years not skating and the indys came looser than I used to ride and I don't have a tool, though it's coming tomorrow, but yeah I can barely Ollie and I know that's the one thing I used to have on lock and it's because it's so wobbly when you crouch. Can't wait to tighten them up, they do carve nice though for general cruising so I see appeal both ways.

tight trucks: easier to land tricks, no wheelbite, less speed wobbles. loose trucks: lock into grinds easier, better style (dont need to tic tac, looks better imo when you carve)

I’ve always skated super tight trucks your more stable for starting tricks but you gotta land them clean. It’s only recently that I’ve started loosening then a quarter turn every few sessions, I’ve got to the point where there not loose or tight and it you get the best of both worlds Edit my grammar is poor to so I’m gonna start loosening up my words a quarter turn each few you tube videos
