Normal people know when they are overreacting because we temper our emotions to fit the facts. Narcissists cannot do that - their emotions dictate 'facts'. Even if you presented this woman with undeniable proof that something she said was an outright lie her brain literally couldn't believe it. She would accuse you of doctoring the evidence or just completely shut down and refuse to engage with you. It's actually really sad because they aren't a complete personality - they can't actually feel joy or sadness or love or contentment (though they can fake it), but it's also really scary the damage they are capable of inflicting.
