It finished Liverpool 5-1 West Ham United at Anfield as Edson Alvarez was sent off as The Hammers exited the Carabao Cup. Lopetegui's side took the lead from a Quansah own goal before Diogo Jota scored either side of half time. Mo Salah made it 3-1 before Edson Alvarez was sent off with a second booking. Coady Gakpo scored twice in stoppage time to make it 5-1 and an easy night for Arne Slot

I wish Ollie Scarles would get a crack at left back. I'm confident he would develop quickly given an opportunity. At least playing somebody like Scarles is giving hope to the academy and the supporters.

I think it is a good time to integrate the youngsters, I remember when we were going down and we introduced Ben Johnson and we found we had a really good player. I'm not sure this careful careful approach with youngsters is! I think we need the positive energy in the team that they bring and also give the crowd a lift

I have accepted West Ham are slow of foot and slow of mind. I have also accepted we are not a very good team as a collective. Plus that I now can accept we are not what I was hoping we were going to be this season, so all said and done it’s back to the standard disappointing season I’ve nearly always experienced

Today's Tony cottee interview on talk sport was very frank and I think spot on. Our goalkeeper was crap we can't play out from the back and we haven't any pace in the middle Also a big mistake not signing Duran! I don't think anyone who looked at the lineup was surprised by that result. Ings up top on his own, Cress and Coufal at full back and Big Tom in the middle. The lack of pace alone with these players makes me scratch my head at Lopetegui's decisions.

I’m fully on board with the idea that the Moyes out gang are not to blame for getting Lopetegui in. But you have to admit that some of the Moyes In gang were trying to warn of this type of appointment as part of the reason they were Moyes in. Leaves the current debate in a bizarre situation. The two sides have split themselves into sub categories. It’s mad enough we all care about this so much in the first place. Peace

Why? It's a long-term project. It's barely been a half dozen games in the Prem. We need to be patient. This is a new structure for the club, new in the sense that we now have a coach and director on the same page and can start to build that long-term footballing philosophy. It doesn't come in a day. The main thing is that we can at least be competitive, while we are finding our feet, and not drop heads too much when it isn't yet clicking. This is essentially a new team, a new philosophy, and for the players that were already here, a lot of changes to adapt to. The players won't really buy into the tactics until they see them working for the team, that the team is winning by using those tactics. When that happens, it becomes a virtuous circle of constant improvement. You can see that Lopetegui is very clear about that. He's asking for constant improvement, and that is exactly the approach. Keep applying, keep improving... in the system that is being used, and little by little the results will come, assuming it's a good philosophy. And you can see that Lopetegui has had success with those tactics and philosophy in the past.

Kilman's bambi on ice footwork when trying to put the ball away for 2-2 summed us up at the moment. He looked a cert to tap in the ball and developed the old AJ legs and made a right ol pigs ear of it. Kilman has been our best player as well so that was typical of the run we're on. Hopefully Brentford will be the turning point.

I sorry but we need to put this in context: we’ve lost to Villa, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Played two London Derby’s away (palace and Fulham) and got 4 points. This is a really difficult start to a season. I understand performances haven’t been great but the negativity helps no one. And calling for the managers head after 6 games when you see the list of teams we’ve played is crazy. Let’s stop building the pressure ourselves and just let it play out.

Sorry for leaving so many comments but regarding the fans not being responsible for decisions at the club. While I totally agree that fans are not responsible for Lopetegui's appointment, Fulkrug''s signing etc. There is absolutely no way you can convince me that fans are not responsible for Moyes leaving. Can you honestly say that you think Sullivan and Brady would have wanted Moyes gone had there been no negativity from a large section of supporters? I imagine Sullivan would have been more than happy with the job Moyes did, the league positions and the European cup runs. While the fans should take no blame in the Lopetegui appointment, Moyes going is 100% because of the negativity from a portion of the fans.

Cresswell was one of better players, Tobibo looked like the player Juve wanted, Bowen was on fire, Solar he the looked good on the whole espas an alternative to Paqueta, Antonio look really good, Jimmy was fab! There is a lot of good press on Steiden but I'm a little disappointed because our primary goal was to get a striker but we failed. Rodriquez & Fullkrug are aging and its tough to adapt to the premier league let alone in their 30s!

As if there was no other explanation. A new footballing structure (one that actually gives far more responsibility away from the Board to the Director of Football), a new footballing philosophy, a large number of new (and talented) players, and a new season. Don't you think this is a more plausible explanation for why the results are not yet coming or the team isn't yet fluid tactically? As for your idea that it's just all about the managers being useless, well, that's a muck-tinted spectacles point of view after three seasons in Europe and a European trophy. You don't achieve that if the managers are 'useless'. You create a problem that is only half real and then go in search of solution. Of course teams go through ups and downs, especially when you are not getting the absolute elite players. It isn't even about money. Can we offer regular Champion's League football? No. And yet people expect us to beat a team like Liverpool just by turning up. It takes an absolutely top performance by a team firing on all cylinders. It's just silly unrealistic expectations that are only focused on the short-term results and not the actual reality on the ground.

I could care less about the result, I was pleased with our organization and peformance for 70 minutes yesterday given the opposition and venue: perspective. It showed me that JL does get it. The first half was much better than I have seen so far. Unfortunately Alvarez has become a liability. Enjoy his tenacity, but he's not intelligent with it. Thought the starting 11 was interesting. Perhaps Cresswell was misplaced but frankly I thought the team was MUCH better against Liverpool than the "first team" were against Chelsea. Looking forward to Brentford.

All this start to the season really says is it will be hard (though not impossible) to get into Europe. I fully expect wind over the weaker teams and a lowest position of 14th.-15th. Getting the right players at the right time is always key. A year ago We tried to buy McTominay and Maguire. Many people were sceptical fast forward to the second half of the season and the collapse of form (and knees) of Zouma and injuries and form loss in other CB lead to a defensive collapse. And a failed trial with Kalvin Phillips. A year on we had a chance to buy an exciting striker from villa but didn't get the deal done. Now we are short up front while the striker in question is banging in goals (including against us). By the end of the season I suspect lack of goals will be the main limiting factor in what we achieve.

Exactly right. New philosophy, new team, new coach. It absolutely will take time. Brighton went down this route in 2019, and it takes a few seasons to really see the benefits. Although we've had Steidten a couple of years now, it's only really this season that we are fully committed to this new structure. It will take time. @@ghostdriver7558 Yep, and I guess trying to find 'the reason' is just human nature, even when the reason is obvious. Fans think a bad result is the result of 'something bad', rather than something just not working, not working yet. It's just silly think it has to be a 'bad' manager, or a 'bad' owner. Especially when there is plenty of evidence to contradict that - Sully has got the club onto an excellent financial footing and laid the foundation for a spell that was definitely 'mixed', but the best of that mix was pretty fantastic, let's face it. Moyes can have his faults and still be a good manager. Fans can want more attractive football without having to create lies or a false view of the club or the football to support that. It's the bitterness and hatred that comes with it, or the silly being hugely judgmental, black and white thinking that spoils the point of view. Nothing wrong with wanting attractive football.

Some would cynically say it's because he doesn't want to dip into his pocket, but in the big scheme of things, getting a new manager isn't that much of an investment... more like replacing an injured player in the January window kind of money. Slag him off, as some fans do, for that... but it does help create a bit of stability, which other teams haven't had, and they've been worse off for it. Let's hope we have a result against Brentford! Before we get onto the game last night , I just want to say that I think our transfer window is one of the reasons we look so poor , really do not think its as good as many think it is . Really do not understand the thinking behind the selection last night , especially as we only have the league to compete in this season . The starting 11 have looked disjointed from day one , surely to become familar with each other and the tactics they need to be playing together as often as possible . Don't think changing the position of certain players from one match to the next helps either , or having players in unfamilar positions .

Depends what you want from a manager I think, I wouldn’t be THAT keen on him myself. On paper he did alright at Dortmund with the Pokal, title race and CL final but his tactics were not great, didn’t really develop the younger players and manager to fall out with a couple of the senior ones over style of play
@MyShowbizName
@MyShowbizName 7 күн бұрын
I'm not sure the fella is being unfair suggesting it was either Moyes or Lopetegui because Sullivan is so unambitious that it probably was that 50/50 choice and Steidten probably supported it because he wanted more control of transfers and Moyes wasn't having it. Lets be honest, there is no going back to Moyes given how it ended, too many anti Moyes supporters and Moyes would know that. Lopetegui needs a fair crack although the guy who suggested Potter might be on to something. He took over a very anti football side in Brighton and did a good job of turning them in to a good footballing side in a couple of seasons, the question mark is whether he could replicate it under Sullivan. Brighton is such a utopia, it almost seems that any manager can succeed.
@512Squared

Brighton have been using the Director of Football model for nearly five years how and have been seeing the benefits in recent seasons. It takes time for the whole club to align to that structure and for the benefits to be seen. A couple of years at least, I would say, since the playing philosophy that runs all through the club at all ages means youth players know the style and system they are expected to play at senior level. It's really early days for us in that respect. Ironic that the Director of Football is a more long-term structure, and it needs a long term commitment to really see the benefits. The Head Coach in that system is responsible for translating that onto the pitch, short-term, game by game, but that takes time too. If we are going to have that kind of structure, then the fans need to buy into maintaining that long-term perspective too, and see that decisions are all moving us in that direction where the benefits will come, even when they are not immediately visible. Patience is a real thing.

A good comment, found myself agreeing with it all too. Maybe it was Moyes or Lopetegui for Sullivan but it doesn’t mean it was for fans. The suggestions by some which is ‘this is what you wanted’ just isn’t true for a lot of fans. I am not even sure it’s what Sullivan wanted as imagine his first priority would have been to retain Moyes for most of the season

@@lewis4929 btw, if we adjust for those three worst results, our goals against would have been 58, on a par with Crystal Palace (58) and Brighton (62), both teams that had very good seasons. Those three awful results heavily skewed our defensive record for the whole season. It wasn't a great record, but it also wasn't that terrible either. An example of fans misusing or misunderstanding statistics. I'll go with the former, since it's so obviously a case of cherry picking.

I was more dejected against Chelsea at the weekend and more hopeful after last night, contrary to the actual results. last night was night and day in terms of performance compared to our cup game against them last season, some terrible decisions and falling asleep in certain moments brutally punished us, but cup game or no we can’t be rolling over in the last 10 mins to flatter them like that.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but fans calling for or predicting a sacking are likely the same ones that will be singing his name when we have won 3 in a row. A bit or perspective here, before you give west ham fans a bad name folks. Both a mid table finish and a good cup run are still entirely probable. Sack talk is far too premature. Good performances come before results. And we just saw one for 70 minutes.

It's not a black and white setup. Never was. Coach and director are supposed to discuss what players might fit to the footballing philosophy that has been adopted. Once you have identified players you think will fit, and there has been agreement, then it's the Director's job to get the players, and the manager's job to mould them to that footballing philosophy. There is nothing here that I can see to suggest that Lopetegui is trying to work as a manager. What makes you think that?

I think any manager would struggle with the team that J Lo inherited. I also think that any manager would struggle given that we’ve played Man City, Aston Villa, Liverpool & Chelsea in our first 7 games. The teams that we won and drew are either on our level or below. I don’t think it has been as bad as what everyone else seems to think. I feel once we’re halfway through the season we will get better. Yes I agree it hasn’t been a great start and it should be better but I just think it’s still very early, and he isn’t a bad manager. He stopped Wolves from relegation & won the Europa League. We will come good, and I think in his first season, he deserves time. Unless we’re in the bottom 5 or 6 by Christmas, I don’t see any real reason to panic.

I don't think it is trolling to be pointing out that the Moyes was a decent manager and the 'careful what you wish for' actually had a ring of truth to it. Of course, we could have replaced Moyes with any number of managers, and we went for Lopetegui. Some fans were instantly sharpening their knives when they heard the appointment, so the MoyesOut simply switched to preparing their LoppyOut badges. The sensible non-trolling opinion is probably that it's still too early to judge Lopetegui. But the way that people are going after him, the tactics, the selections etc, it really does feel like they don't really care for common sense and just want to be Brighton. To those I say, why don't you move south and hook up with your secret lover? Okay, that was trolling :D Final point, it isn't trolling because us Moyes In crowd had to listen to a constant diatribe about how terrible everything was (even when it wasn't) for two years, so yeah, I understand if some folks feel like reminding those folks of the old 'careful what you wish for...'. The depressive mood from all that whinging is still in the air.
