Here are my thoughts from last night's fight between Teofimo Lopez and Jermaine Ortiz. Personally feel Lopez was very lucky to get the decision and it doesn't bode well for him for future opponents.

I think you’re the first person calling it as it is. I would like to add and maybe you can add to your content. Teo did cut off the ring in the early rounds but it was without the jab because Ortiz wasn’t throwing as much jabs. But the issue was that Ortiz was clinching. Now I know clinching is part of boxing but it’s not part of the rules. There is no holding so this is where teo dad should have been on the ref Mr Harvey about clinching. I think that this modern day fighting there not calling clinching or holding. I can prove that because we no longer have great inside fighters. Mills lane use to take the fighters hand and move it to force them to fight inside. I digress later in the rounds Teo was frustrated and Ortiz slowed but started skip stepping around should be no skipping and running because in the Olympics European refs call it. But Ortiz did him a disfavor by all the clinching which can zap your power. Now not sure if you’re a licensed coach but in the US. They have meeting and dinners and they talk about scoring and aggressors always get the round supposed to if the rounds are close reason why is because aggressors make the fight. Hence linares saying Lomenchenko won the fight because he was making the fight. Now you can effectively aggression but there was really no effective countering maybe 1 or 2 punches. Haney vs rougerou yeah rougerou was the aggressor but rounds were not close and hainey clearly dominated but it’s not good to allow backfoot fighters to win close rounds it does a disservice to boxing.

Ortiz normally doesn't fight this way. It's clear he had a game plan and stuck to it. It completely nullified Teo's offense. People criticizing Ortiz to fight or bite down and brawl against the lunging pressure fighter isn't smart, especially since Ortiz doesn't have the same amount of KO power. Think Saddler versus Pep. Pep is a mover but Saddler beat Pep by cutting off the ring. Ali said himself you get tired or it's impossible to dance 24/7. Teo actually had success in spurts with his pressure but undid the mental pressure whenever he got frustrated and began taunting.

Also want to add something else. I was sparring a couple weeks ago and the coach basically said despite the fact I looked like I was in control (I was; opponent was throwing jabs and and I was catching them), he would be giving the round to my opponent simply because he was moving forward and throwing. That's when I started catching and shooting, and I opened up my offense. I made sure to make it clear that I could do whatever I wanted when I wanted because I'm better. Sometimes, you have to be mindful of who the judges are and what they're looking for. If Jamaine is guilty of anything, it's not showing enough flashes of clear control (even though I thought he won)

This recent surge of fighters having low punch output and just running from one side of the ring to the other like they are doing suicide drills at basketball practice ISN’T boxing. Outside fighting and outside fighters can be entertaining and effective. But what Ortiz did was NOT boxing and he was giving away rounds by running around the ring and not punching. Bad strategy in a world title fight since he didn’t win, bad business strategy to get you future fights with promoters or boxers, and bad marketing strategy to build your fanbase. I think Teo’s inability to cut the ring off speaks to the culture of outboxing/counterpunching in boxing nowadays. There’s a stigma against pressure fighting as being mindless, easy, and brutish and because of this stigma pressuring is neglected. I guarantee if you were to ask fans/fighters who’s more technical out of Teo or Beterbiev most will say Teo based off his HL’s.

Personally I think comparing Ortiz last night performance to haney's performance against Regis makes no sense at all. Haney was jabbing and working while in the back foot, connecting the clearest punches of the fight and hurting Regis, on the other hand Oriz wouldnt engage AT ALL at some moments, barely jabbing or trying to actually connect besides those two flurries. A truly weak performance coming from a challenger, besides Teo's incompetence to cut off the ring. AT MOST, it could've been a draw. But you cannot expect to get on the ring with a champion, trying to survive rather than fight for twelve rounds and the judges giving you his belt for it. Ortiz deserved to lose.
@ShakurTheAshier
@ShakurTheAshier 4 ай бұрын
and it was Regis who was hesitant to engage because Haneys counters were so effective and he'd catch combinations every time. Teo chased the guy the entire time, they claim he couldn't close off the ring but if a fighter isn't looking to engage you're never going to catch them lol. Regis is a perfect example of someone who couldn't close off the ring against a guy who was still looking to engage and do some damage and actually punish him for not being able to establish position.

There was a little (or a lot) of both. Ever since the Loma win, Teo has not added new levels to his game. There's a lot of delusion when it comes to his overall career accolades. 1 or 2 great wins are good, but it doesn't make you the greatest fighter of all time. He seems to truly believe that in his head, and it's what's holding him back from developing further imo. One thing he hasn't worked on is cutting off the ring. On the flip side, Ortiz boxed well, but he also wasn't setting up much offense...at all. Would have been a perfect game plan if Ortiz had taken more chances with his offense.

I think Ortiz threw away the fight in the later rounds but outboxed Teo in several of the rounds later on. It was a match between two very good boxers and I don't think it reflects that badly on him, its just that Lopez was dealing with a severely underrated operator. The problem was that Ortiz's output, already low, dropped in the second half and allowed Lopez to assert himself and clearly land the more damaging shots, securing a very close win in my book. It does show a weakness against back foot boxers and makes me think that Haney has all the neccesary tools to beat him. I feel like Lopez would end up getting picked apart by Haney on the outside.

Real defense can be done in a very small space. Duran, Benitez, Leonard, Whittaker, Mayweather could all stand in front of you and make you pay. Queensbury rules came about because the fights were much like mma today. Ironically today's mma makes Boxing "runners "look old fashioned and boring. Imho if Boxing is to not just survive but thrive All rings should be 18 ft maximum 16 minimum. Those great boxers can still play defense but it will cut down on runners significantly.

In my opinion Teo won he was the aggressor and landed the significant blows than Ortiz. To me the great technical fighters knew how to mix in pure boxing and exchange of punches to please the crowd and judges. Like Ray Leonard, Hearns, and say even Lennox Lewis

I get people’s reason for not wanting Ortiz to win and that’s fine. But Teo did absolutely nothing to adjust. He just got more frustrated and kept missing. Doesn’t look good that you can’t cut off the ring man.

Lopez really need to learn how to cut off ring, and setup his punch better. He shouldn't won this fight. Lopez is only moving forward. It was Ortiz who decide when to engage & not to. Why blame Ortiz when the pressure fighter is the one that failed his game plan

You have to bring the fight to the champion. Ortiz did not do that. Teo also took the championship rounds and also landed the cleaner and effective punches while putting pressure.

Are punches in the clinch counted as "landed shots" in Compubox numbers? Based off the eye test I noticed Ortiz landed quite a few flurries of pitty-patty punches in the clinch... and theres no doubt that those got added in to the stat. Those however are NOT SCORING SHOTS. Teo landed to the body alot and started catching Ortiz to the head near the end and turned it up. Ortiz literally gassed second half of the fight and threw NO OFFENSE. You cant just give him a round because he landed 2 partially blocked check right hooks but ate multiple body shots and right hands/hooks. Overall Jamaine Ortiz' performance was a DISGRACE TO BOXING, and for that showing he deserves to be fed to SUBRIEL MATIAS NEXT.

I don’t think Ortiz deserved to win and I’m happy he didn’t win the fight, that kinda stupid style shouldn’t be rewarded not to say Teo did great or blew him out of the water, but the sport of boxing wouldn’t win if they reward fight styles like Ortiz’s more fighters would do it and the more fighters do it the less people would be willing to watch boxing, I’m happy that silly little road running didn’t get him the belt be slick and defensive with intent to hurt

What I find funny is that right before the fight Teo said Puerto Rican boxers are soft .Ortiz born in Massachusetts to PR parents, goes into the ring with the Puerto Rico flag and then makes Lopez look correct. Clearly Puerto Rico boxers are not soft but Ortiz in this case was .I can't understand how Lopez can insult you and then you lose your huevos.

@SuperFights77 But we can barely call this thing with Ortiz a win. Also Haney is more defensive, bigger than Ortiz and isn't afraid to throw hands.
@DavorBa

@SuperFights77 I agree he won but he shown his weakness in inability to cut the ring and deal with sleek hit n run fighters who dont engage him. All Ortiz needed was some heart and more output and he would've won, but his overall tactic was very good. Haney has a better defense and doesn't rely on running nearly as much, meaning he will have more opportunity to strike. But you are right that also means he can *get* punched. But overall I don't think Lopez can win vs Haney but I would sure like to see them fight regardless.

I think your analysis is correct, but tour conclusions are wrong. Ortiz cannot win a fight being on the backfoot for 12 rounds and landing less power punches than Teo and just a few more jabs. There's a thing called Ring generalship and Ortiz had none, he basically ran away trying to make a Sandor Martin 2 kinda fight, but unlike Martin, he couldn't put Teo down twice. In fact, Teo showed decent head movement and reaction, since he made Ortiz miss like crazy (just like Ortiz made him miss). I concur that Teo lacks fundamentals on how to fight slick boxers, and I honestly think that he lost to Martin, but he didn't lose this one. To land 2 more punches (jabs) than the campion, while backpedaling for 12 rounds doesn't make you a champion, and while Teo's performance was poor, Ortiz's was poorer. So, boring fight, Teo won, Ortiz probably lost all his potential audience, and let's move on.
@drinfernodds
@drinfernodds 4 ай бұрын
On the flip side, I wouldn't say Teo showed any ring generalship either. Ortiz became reliant on escaping to his right, and Teo and his corner failed to find a way to shut it down. In a way everyone lost.
@BoxingLife

I think its very harsh to say ortiz had NO 'ring generalship' and 'ran away' I think it makes it look even poorer the fact Teo couldn't do more! If anything that embarrassing for a guy that is calling out Terence Crawford! Like come on surely Teo shoudl be knocking a guy out like this if he boxing like that. p.s respect your opinion btw

Look at the compubox numbers , Teofimo landed more powershots than ortiz , you cant win a fight by running a marathon all 12 rounds , gentlemen Boxing is a sport of contact , not a running sport. Floyd moved (lineal) a lot but also hit a lot , thats the difference here
